Once On Much – Ep09 Ryan Dahle<\/a>\"\"<\/h5>\n

There are certain voices that are stitched into the fabric of Canadian alternative rock. Spend five minutes talking to Ryan Dahle<\/strong> and you realize he\u2019s never really thought of himself as part of a \u201cscene\u201d \u2014 even though he helped define one.<\/p>\n

In our latest episode of Once On Much<\/em>, I chat with Ryan Dahle<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 best known for his work with Age of Electric<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/a>, Limblifter<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/strong> and Mounties<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong> \u2014 for a wide-ranging conversation that somehow felt both nostalgic and completely present-tense.<\/p>\n

When I asked what he remembers about the so-called golden era of \u201990s Canadian alt-rock \u2014 the era of Sloan<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Our Lady Peace<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, The Tea Party<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Moist<\/span><\/span>,<\/strong> and I Mother Earth<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u2014 his answer wasn\u2019t about a scene. It was about survival. Rehearsal spaces in Vancouver. Long drives. Inside jokes. Being locked in with your bandmates and figuring it out as you went. They didn\u2019t see themselves as part of a Canadian movement; they were just chasing what excited them, shaped as much by Seattle\u2019s explosion as anything happening at home. The bands that embraced them \u2014 like The Odds<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and The Northern Pikes<\/span><\/span><\/strong> \u2014 were peers, not templates.<\/p>\n

If there was a common thread, it was MuchMusic<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. For a generation, it was a tastemaker and lifeline, with shows like The Wedge<\/span><\/span><\/em> and Power Hour<\/span><\/span><\/em> shaping identities in real time. In a move that feels almost impossible now, he cold-called the station to pitch a 16mm video. It got played. Momentum followed \u2014 relentless touring, endless phone calls, pure hustle. When \u201cRemote Control<\/em><\/a>\u201d landed on Big Shiny Tunes 2<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, it cemented something bigger than airplay: a million-plus CDs spinning their name into collective memory. From Limblifter<\/strong>\u2019s rule-bending songwriting experiments to Mounties\u2019<\/strong> lightning-in-a-bottle collaboration with Hawksley Workman<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and Steve Bays<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, the throughline isn\u2019t nostalgia \u2014 it\u2019s curiosity.<\/p>\n
