It is difficult to talk about violence in our society, but we must do so. We must find a way to end the victimization of the less powerful, to address the inequalities of sex and race and class, and give our support to those individuals who are victims.
The White Ribbon Campaign seeks to unite men in seeking an end to violence by men against women. A Fredericton chapter has just begun this year, meeting to find ways of spreading the message and recruiting more men to pledge to first never commit violence against women, but also to not turn a blind eye to violence that happens to any woman.
I had the chance to sit down with Nick Dean and Jennifer Richard of the White Ribbon Campaign Fredericton committee. We talked about the nature and roots of the problem, what we can do to address it on a societal level, and about the upcoming march.
The WRCF are having a march of solidarity on Monday, December 9, starting at Officer’s Square at 12:15 and going down to the Town Hall. There, men are asked to sign a ribbon to pledge their support of the campaign. You can find out more information on their website, or on their Facebook group.
