History of Paddlefest Paddlefest is a music and outdoor recreation festival held in the picturesque resort town of St. Andrews, New Brunswick every May. Started in the late 1990s by the town’s “unofficial mayor” Jamie Steel as a way to bring together the community’s love of music, art and nature, the small grass-roots style event became a staple of the town and a favourite time of year for many. Every year it continued to grow, creating a fine balance between activities that capitalize on the region’s unique environment (kayaking, canoeing, boating, beach clean ups) and showcasing local musicians and artists. In 2007 Jamie Steel stepped down and handed the reigns to music and recreation enthusiast Stacey MacLean and local businessman and entrepreneur Kevin Simmonds. Stacey and Kevin helped grow Paddlefest into an even bigger event, incorporating more music, venues and events into the already busy weekend. In 2013 Stacey handed her reigns over to Luke Macdonald, a hometown boy with a degree in event and talent management and a keen interest in the local music industry. Luke and Kevin now partner together to ensure Paddlefest lives on and continues to grow. Paddlefest combines a plethora of music with a smattering of Paddling in some of the region’s beautiful lakes, rivers and the one of a kind Passamaquoddy Bay. It is the weekend that St. Andrews comes alive after a long sleepy winter. Since it is known as the “festival that opens the season,” it has also become the event that brings summer homeowners to town to open their homes for the season. As folks start pouring back into the town, restaurants and gift shops open up and the festival becomes a sort of awakening to St. Andrews for the people, a chance to discover the natural beauty of the town itself and the inherently artistic quality of the people in the community. It creates that first spring bond with the town, one that often sees many of these people come back year after year.
