The more you know about something, the less sure you are that you really know what that something is.
What is the difference between an opera and a Broadway musical? Is it possible to be both? My guest today is Adrian Park, host of the long-running classical music and opera program on Sunday afternoons called Diversions. Every summer, he extends his program by an hour to fit in a series of full operas. This summer, he’s taking a look at productions from North America, many of which straddle the line between operas and musicals.
To demonstrate, he brought a sample of Treemonisha, an opera by Scott Joplin, well-known African-American composer and performer better know for his ragtime music. We hear the last song of the opera, A Real Slow Drag.
You can find Diversions every Sunday at 4pm on CHSR! The summer opera series begins July 3.
