Our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman swings back in to action exclusively on the PlayStation 4 this time. In this strange marvel universe adventure, we see Peter Parker 8 years after he has become Spiderman, trying to balance a job, time with his family and friends all while trying to be Spiderman.
Spiderman is nothing short of amazing and yes every pun is intended there, the swinging through New York feels so fluid and satisfying that it never gets old. It does however have a big learning curve of getting the timing down from swinging to launch points but when you get the hang of it, it Is like an adrenaline rush going through your body. The combat is like the beloved Arkham series, only with a different button layout, Spider Man is very agile, and he uses that to the best of his ability, what really impressed me about the combat in my experience was how much I used every ability and gadget he had in his arsenal as compared to when I played the Batman games.
The story in Spider Man has some great writing and acting in it too, we see Martin Li (Mr. Negative) try to destroy Norman Osbourne’s political and campaign run because of what happened earlier in his life. Mr. Negative has some classic allies with him as well such as vulture, scorpion and rhino which the makes the game that much more exciting. So as you would expect Spider Man attempts to bring peace to the New York state all while trying to balance out his life.
During your adventure there are plenty of side activities and collectibles to keep you going for hours and they are all fun, I have never completed a game as much as I did Spider Man. As you complete the side missions and collectibles you unlock new things such as costumes, abilities, and gadgets and upgrades for the gadgets. I never found myself getting bored or frustrated during these side activities which is a big plus they were the perfect amount of length. The main story of the game will take you just about over 20 hours and will have some very cool Easter eggs from the comics and the marvel universe especially if you have watched the movies or red the comic books.
Insomniac did a wonderful job shining a new light on spider man for PlayStation owners, making the world feel alive unlike any other, fluid web swinging and agile fighting style and fantastic writing. I can not wait until the new game plus mode to play through this game again, Spider man will make super hero games stand to the test of time for years to come.
