Epic, is CHSR’s show of the month this month. Each month I ask the show’s host/producer five questions to get to know the show better.
EPIC: Epic is a radio show and podcast about all things awesome! Science, technology, geek humor, and more. Tune in weekly at 5pm on Monday and 11:30am on Fridays and via podcast.
1) What made you start your show?
I guessed on a show called, “Role Initiative”. It re-kindled my passion for spoken word entertainment. Bobby (the host of Role Initiative) handed me over an application for membership. Shortly after I applied for my own show as well.
2) Tell us a little about your hosts?
Joel: My original co-host from the beginning. I’ve known Joel since my early years in Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. I knew I couldn’t do the show alone and he’s the kind of guy you can depend on for just about anything.
Richard: Despite difficulties with his speech, Richard joined a short while later. I went to High School with Richard. He’s never backed down from a challenge and speaking on the radio despite his difficulties didn’t give him a moment of pause when I asked him to join.
Andy: I’ve known Andy for about 6 years or so. He’s always willing to help anyone in need and was eager to help out with this project as well.
3) Who would be your dream guest on your show?
I remember sitting around with my co-hosts and some other friends in my sun room one night. The discussion somehow stumbled onto this very topic. On the list was (in no particular order): Will Wheaton, Felicia Day (or anyone else from the guild.), Anna Silk, Lindsey Ellis, Doug Walker, Alex Albrecht, Kevin Rose, and a few more. I cannot remember off hand all the people we had mentioned. The list is primarily Bloggers, Podcasters, and people who are popular in the ‘online geek world’.
Of course adding people like Will Wheaton and Anna Silk to that list was a bit of a reach. After all, they were more big television celebrities. But we were day dreaming, so we didn’t care. A short time later, a friend of mine sent me the email address of Anna Silks’ agent. We figured, what the heck. Worth a shot right? So I sent an email out fully expecting a polite ‘no’ but instead received yes. The first scheduled interview was going to be over the phone, but Anna later began to write me in person and even changed it from a telephone interview to an in studio interview. Needless to say, we didn’t expect such a warm welcome, and are really excited about this interview (which will be in a few days as of the time of this writing).
4) What made you decide to come to CHSR to air your show?
My primary interest was helping CHSR in a more technical aspect. The show was an idea of mine to go over some interesting developments in technology and science through the years. The title, “Epic” was more in reference to the definition which includes: “… narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures …” Joel and I recorded one show. The research was long and arduous, and the show not very entertaining. In an attempt to make the show more interesting, we shifted the focus on awareness of certain things going on today. Specifically on-line scams and such. This seemed a bit more fun to do. We shifted even further into geekdom with the following two episodes on the topic of childhood toys. We enjoyed talking about these topics so much that we just continued down that line of topics.
5) Where do you see the show going in the future?
Really we don’t have any future visions of the show. It seems every time we make a vision it gets swept aside. Originally the show was to have no more than two hosts and maybe a guest. As it turns out, a large number of hosts makes for good conversation. The original topics were suppose to be history driven, however that changed rather quickly as well. Having guests on the show never really occurred to us, but Anna Silk has been kind enough to accept an invitation. The success of show has grown far beyond what we had originally anticipated. At this point, I think it may be best to let the show evolve however it may.
