Outlast Trinity Review

Posted on 2017-05-06 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

Developer Red Barrels brings us Outlast Trinity a combination of Outlast 1 & 2 on one disc, Red Barrels brings survival horror to an all new level with these two games, is that enough to make it a loved franchise or forgotten in the dark? let’s find out.

Both Outlast 1 and 2 feature the same style of gameplay with a few added things in 2, you play in the first person view as reporter’s Miles in Outlast 1 investigating an incident that took place at an insane asylum coming to discover experiments have been conducted on their patients. The patients of the asylum have become very psychotic and are looking to kill you before you escape the asylum.
In Outlast 2 you play as Blake who is on an assignment investigating an 8-month pregnant woman as you approach your location their helicopter crashes. You wake up in the dessert in Arizona finding the pilot skinned alive and Lynn has been taken by a cult because they believe that she is pregnant with the antichrist and you are the father; so you want to get out of the Supai region and get Lynn. During Blakes horrible nightmare he keeps getting flashbacks to the school he went to as a kid revealing how his friend Jessica died in that school.

Like I said previously these two games have the same gameplay style, you are running around two creepy locations with your only way to see is a camera light and the natural and rare occurrences where there is a light. In order to keep using the camera lights, you need to collect batteries or else the light goes out. You will have run in with enemies but there are locations you must hide so they do not catch you or else you will die a horrible gruesome death. The only difference in gameplay is in number 2 you have a microphone on your camera that can track sound, and you record some things to collect evidence which is really annoying because you do not need collectibles in these type of games it is really tedious.

Outlast 1 and 2 are both very good at bringing the psychological horror to life with no weapons, just a camera to keep you alive is a very thrilling and terrifying experience all at the same time. Making it better than Resident Evil Biohazard which was released earlier this year.

Outlast Trinity:7/10
Good Job Red Barrels

The Lunchbox Interview: Patti Auld Johnson (Butt Blitz 2017)

Posted on 2017-05-05 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Smoking is pretty disgusting — so why would we consider the waste from smoking any less disgusting?

My guest today is Patti Auld Johnson, one of the local organizers of the national Butt Blitz event on Saturday, May 6. The event seeks to clean up our environment by intensely targetting one particular type of toxic waste that is all too casually created: cigarette butts. She talks about the goals of this movement, how people can get involved, and what the real impact of the problem is.

Conference Call RFC: Ellen’s Law

Posted on 2017-05-05 by encaf1 Posted in Conference Call

Conference Call is a weekly live call-in program at 11am every Monday. You can participate live via phone, Twitter or Facebook, or join in after the show has aired by leaving a comment here, calling our voicemail line at (506) 453-4989 or emailing feedback@chsrfm.ca . Responses after the show may be included in future shows.

NEW TIME: Conference Call is a live 1/2 hour show, starting at 11am on Mondays.

Coming up next: Ellen’s Law. The provincial government just passed “Ellen’s Law”, an act modifying the Motor Vehicle Act. The changes are intended to clarify the relationship and requirements for motor vehicles with respect to cyclists who share the road — adding strength to the “1-meter rule” where a vehicle is required to keep 1 meter from a cyclist when passing them, making the road safer for cyclists. The act was focused as a reaction to the death of star NB cyclist Ellen Watters in late December 2016, from injuries sustained when a motor vehicle collided with her bicycle. The questions we’re asking include: is this enough? does this make a difference? and, how do we share the road safely between bicycles and cars?

Album Review: Hero’s Last Rite – Wasted Prayer

Posted on 2017-05-05 by Johnny James Posted in General, General Distortion, Music Reviews

If you thought Hero’s Last Rite had any soft spots left when it comes to their brand of extreme thrash, rest assure that their third-coming album, “Wasted Prayer”, has reinforced them all. Their ECMA winning album “The Mirrors Face” tore a strip off Fredericton’s music scene in 2014 and this installment of the band is back for the remains.

Kicking off with the album’s title track, vocalist Steve MacDonald embodies a god during an existential crisis, awakening those who rely on prayers to the reality that only they can help themselves. MacDonald’s sermon is backed by opening instrumentals that start off groovy but quickly sharpen to a rough edge of speed riffs and thunderous percussion. The frantic atmosphere carries into “Engage The Weak”, a track with a breakneck pace, devilish undertones and fuzz-filled bridge section; appropriate dressing for a song that ends with the numbers 666. Speaking of which, the next track, “Devilfinger”, is an anthem of Satanism, wrestling with the choice between turning the other cheek and taking a stand against one’s enemies. It’s lyrical content constantly pushes and pulls between both sides, with Dr. Jekyll eventually prevailing over Mr. Hyde.

With their dark side in the drivers seat, the band draws a firm line the sand with “Nothing Left” and “The Unforgiving Disease”. Entering a new tier of aggression, even the most melodic elements of their music receive a fresh coat of distortion to keep pace with MacDonald’s gutturals. Following this is “Trapped On Your Side”, which beautifully showcases both the cohesion of the band and their individual strengths. Guitarists Tim Gorman and Mike Davidson lay down some of the heaviest riffs on the album and Gorman provides his best solo. Bassist Eric Godin and drummer Dan Rogers meanwhile are locked in with performances that both complement one another and stand out with solos of their own.

The record concludes the way it began, with an existential crisis. The track “Or The One” tackles the moral quandary of what is more prosperous, the many or the few. The album finishes with “Human”, which brings forth the unpopular reality that it’s the worse things in life that fuel us to respond and act in the best way for ourselves.

It has been seven years since their debut album, and in that time Hero’s Last Rite has defined what it means to progress as a band. They have tamed their sound without losing any of their angst and have brought forth a clear and focused message in their lyrics. The band is standing comfortably on the foundation they’ve built and the sound that works for them, don’t expect this to be their last or their best.

Bondo chats with Sarah Scriver – Interview

Posted on 2017-04-27 by Bondo Posted in Her Turn

April 27, 2017 – Sarah Scriver is a talented singer/songwriter based in Ottawa who released an EP in 2016, Mind Over Matter, with songs about denial, depression, and hope. What’s incredible is that she was only 16 years old.

Getting into music at a very young age she uses those skills to advocate for awareness of extreme bullying, mental illness and other hardships by travelling to schools to educate her peers.

Listen in as Sarah talks about being bullied herself and the release she gets by writing music and what else is coming up for the young songstress!

Conference Call RFC: Music Awards & Honours

NEW TIME: Starting May 1, Conference Call will be a 1/2 hour show, starting at 11am.

Coming up next: Music Awards and Honours. With the ECMAs just finishing, we’re starting to wonder: what is the actual value of awards and honours for musicians? Only a very few can be selected to be on the very top of the podium, but can the process every really take into account the real effort behind the production? How can you choose a winner — what criteria makes sense?

THE CRAZY TRAIN EPISODE #CIX

Posted on 2017-04-25 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

Sam Odeh from Montreal West’s ‘Special Op’s joined me from the phone as we opened this 109th episode of the Crazy Train. Special Ops was supposed to come to Fredericton for a show at the Centre Communautaire Sainte Anne in April, then May, but due to scheduling conflicts this show has been pushed to September 9th. Special Ops released their album ‘Tangents’ along with their single ‘Anger’s Creeping’. So we chatted about the band and what they are up to and where they are going. We also had a contest to win tickets to the Special Ops show in September, we had two winners, Jordan Yerxa won the first pair of tickets and a Special Ops T-shirt and CD. KodJPhil and Yves Pinet  won the other pair of tickets. Thanks for listening and participating!

Also on this episode I paid tribute to the ECMA 2017 nominees in the ‘Loud’ category. This included, Lionsault, Orchid’s Curse, Last Call Chernobyl, Counter Clockwork, Abysseral Throne and Voltang! Best of luck to these bands, all of them put out amazing albums, i’d hate to be the judge! Our very own Johnny James ‘Dio’ will be in Saint John at the ECMA’s covering all things loud! I’m sure we’ll have a great report from him when it’s all said and done!

Since Saturday was ‘Record Store Day’, I devoted the second hour of the Crazy Train to an all vinyl set. Love to spin vinyl, it’s too bad it’s so expensive to press, as I’d love to be able to spin more local bands on vinyl, but being in a band, I totally get the landscape and what one is dealing with just to release an album on CD!

Here’s the playlist for Hour I:

Crazy Train – Ozzy| H.M.  and Pressure- Special Ops| Interview with Special Ops’ Sam Odeh| Freedom – Special Ops| Point of Origin – Last Call Chernobyl| Shadow *NEW – Doom Machine| Living with the Devil| With Haste For Damnation – Abysseral Throne| Scarabs – Voltang| Psychonaut – Counter Clockwork| We Are All Cynics And Liars – Orchids Curse

Hour II: The Unknown Knows – Voivod| Supernaut – Black Sabbath| Overlord – Lamb Of God| The Emerald Law – Probot| Year Zero – Ghost| Culte A La Muerte – Morbosidad| Tears of Blood – SATAN| Oh Father Oh Satan Oh Son – Behemoth
