CHSR Mini Review: Heat and Lights – Where in the World

Posted on 2013-07-09 by Tim Rayne Posted in Music Reviews, Reviews

heat and lightsCHSR Mini Review: Heat and Lights – Where in the World ep

Listen to Heat and Lights while you read. http://heatandlights.bandcamp.com/

Singer/songwriter Tim Walker originally started Heat and Lights as a solo project but on the new EP ‘Where in The World’, Walker has enlisted some fine musicians to the project. With seasoned musicians Brad Perry, Nick Cobham, Dennis Goodwin, Andre Butler rounding out the line up, Heat and Lights sound has become much fuller and dynamic. The album was mixed and recorded by Chris Maclean, who does a phenomenal job capturing the subtle nuances and layers from all the players.

Compared to the previous Heat and Lights demo release (which I previously reviewed), ‘Where in The World’ songs are appear more fully realized. Walker is a strong lyricist and writes on personal observations and reflects musingly on his life experiences fitting snugly into the warm folk/rock/pop sound.

There is a playfulness to Heat and Lights, especially present in the song All I Want is a Dance, where Walker writes a humours take on materialism and greed against his appreciation life’s simpler offerings – like a Dance. ‘Show Me Where to Go’ is the most immediate accessible track on the album with its catchy pop rock hook. While the other tracks are slowburners that get richer with multiple listens, ‘Show Me Where to Go’ is the most uptempo song on the record and a definite highlight. My personal favourite, ‘Your Love’, is a beautifully written love song where Walker sings, ‘You got something I can not speak in words, there is no language or none that I have learned.’ To me that line encompasses the strength of Heat and Lights new record, its how music can move you. An album that is warm as a home cooked meal, familiar as spending quality time with family, and realizing quite simply that happiness is in the eye of the beholder. Great album, highly recommended.

Barenaked Ladies – Grinning Streak – Review!

Posted on 2013-07-05 by Brad Schofield Posted in Maritime Vinyl, Music Reviews

Check out my website at www.maritimevinyl.ca for more reviews, interviews and ramblings. Plus check out my new online record store stocking new and used vinyl!

Just in time for your shorts, t-shirts and sneakers, the Barenaked Ladies are back with Grinning Streak, their eleventh studio album and second as a four piece band. The band has had their share of turmoil in recent years including record label shuffles, a poorly-timed children’s album as well as the departure of co-lead vocalist Steven Page, but they were able to leave all of this behind and hammer out another great sounding album.

Branded as jokesters by most, Grinning Streak carries a more serious tone than their prior releases. Ed Robertson’s voice sounds stronger than ever, almost as if he upped the ante to fulfill the sole lead singing duties. Keyboardist Kevin Hearne, drummer Tyler Stewart and bassist Jim Creeggan sound as tight as ever with what seems like minimal effort. This album has the typical BNL sound with acoustic guitars, harmonies and tastefully used sound effects. A couple of my personal favorite songs are Boomerang and Best Damn Friend. Full of mildly seriously lyrics, a catchy beat and well-crafted choruses, these songs stick in my head for hours after every listen.

I know many fans are hesitant to pick up any Steven Page-less Ladies album thinking that it’s impossible for it to work, but you may be surprised. Sure five Barenaked Ladies are gorgeous, but four are pretty damn hot too. As a fan myself, they will always be incomplete without Page in my eyes too. Regardless, the remaining Ladies still have some solid material up their sleeves and Grinning Streak is a true testament of this. I’m still holding my breath that the differences, addictions, or whatever the hell happened between Steven Page and the band can eventually be ironed out so we can get back to the true full Barenaked Ladies sound that I miss so much. In the meantime, Grinning Streak is the next best thing.

CHSR’s Mini-Review: Lovestorm’s ‘Free to Love’

Posted on 2013-07-02 by Tim Rayne Posted in Music Reviews, Reviews

lovestormCHSR’s Mini-Review: Lovestorm’s ‘Free to Love’

LISTEN to Album while reading the review! http://lovestorm.bandcamp.com/album/free-to-love

It is a fairly known fact that music often becomes permanently connected to our psyche while literally becoming the soundtrack of our lives. With the good times and the bad, we often listen to music while reflecting and meditating, to party with, rage against, cry too, while making love, and dance. Music is truly an intimate medium that allows us to feel a form of expression vicariously through an artist. And if the artist is Lovestorm, the subtle complexity of the music, combined with deeply personal lyrics, form a unique brand of authenticity in their culmination of pop/world/electronic music and organic soul searching reflections on human relationships and the spirit – while being very danceable! This is a new kind of club energy that would sound as good walking down the street, cranked out in your living room, or at a huge festival with glow sticks.

Lovestorm’s new full length ‘Free to Love’ surprised me in its new direction upon first listen, but at the same time, it fits perfectly with the bands previous releases. The band is made up of partners Nina Khosla and Tim Issac who freely use their own life experiences’ as a couple for creative inspiration. The last time I spoke with Nina was for the release of their catchy folk pop release ‘Overripe’, and she hinted that she wanted to make a dance record. And on ‘Free to Love’, Loverstorm deliver on what they promised. They have made an emotionally raw, extremely intimate, if not epic, dream pop record.

Nina Kholsa’s gentle and sweet vocal style perfectly fits the upbeat energy found on the pop tracks. A constant heart beat, pulsating through the music, enhances the intimate nature of the songs. When Tim Issac adds back up vocals and/or when Nina and Tim sing to each other…the band soars. There are moments when I can hear similarities to bands like Stars and Postal Service, but those bands do not have the intimacy heard in Lovestorm’s music or their LIVE performance. In fact, you have to see them to believe it. Not only is their music deeply personal, their LIVE performance is captivating. Watching two people deeply in love, creating music in front of your eyes while Nina and Tim get lost in each other gazes, is unique and provides an organic experience on an electronic musical bed. Watching Nina dance and play keys, while Tim plays the Cello in staggeringly inventive ways, is astonishing.

“Free to Love’ is truly a summer record and Lovestorm has created one of most addictive pop records of the year. These guys have a rich palette to work from and have brought something much needed in the music scene – a highly personal, inspired work of art that is incredibly danceable. My favourite tracks are Rejoice, Beauty, and I Want to be Your Angel.

Where Monsters Dwell is the Show of the Month – July

Posted on 2013-07-01 by Nuchtchas Posted in Show of the Month, Where Monsters Dwell

WMD-246What made you start your show?

Years ago, Remy was co-host of another radio show on another station here in Fredericton. He asked Mike to come in to ‘liven things up a bit’. Once Mike got in, he convinced Remy to turn the show into a comic/pop culture talk show and the rest is heresy…I mean history.

Tell us a little about your yourself?

Mike and Remy have been friends since 3rd grade. They grew up on a steady diet of sugary cereals, cartoons, horror movies and of course comics. Mike likes anything superhero and Remy gets some kind of weird enjoyment out of police procedurals. Chuck pays attention to things Mike and Remy normally miss.

Who would be your dream guest on your show?

Remy has already had his dream guest in the form of comic superstar and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. Mike is still waiting patiently to land the elusive John Byrne. Chuck has always dreamed of being the WMD producer so I guess we can put that baby to bed as well.

What made you decide to come to CHSR to air your show?

At CHSR we enjoy the freedom to produce our show in our own way without any corporate meddling. The equipment is top notch and the staff are always helpful. CHSR welcomed us in when we didn’t have a home and now, 4 years later, we wouldn’t want to do this anywhere else.

Where do you see the show going in the future?

We are currently trying to raise some money to help us get to a few more conventions in Canada. We just got back from the East Coast Comics Expo in Moncton, we are always mainstays at Hal-Con in Halifax as well as the Dartmouth Comic Art Festival, and we are hoping to make it to Toronto in August for Fan Expo. All of these Canadian produced conventions have top notch comic industry guests, so we like to bend their ear a bit here and there to get some tasty audio to play on the radio show and podcast.
