Interview: Thomas Hodd (TNB Presents “O’Brien”)

Posted on 2025-02-06 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

History is often just a list of facts and events and actors, but to better understand it, it may need other things that fiction brings best.

My guest today is Thomas Hodd, the Saint John playwright behind an upcoming Theatre NB production of O’Brien. He joins me to talk about the origins of this play, a story which he first encountered when he was a youth working at a museum.

O’Brien opens on March 5 at TNB’s Open Space Theatre and runs until the 8th, at which time it begins a tour of the province before returning back to the Open Space Theatre for it’s last performance on March 16. See the TNB website for more details.

Interview: TheatreUNB presents Kat Sandler’s “Mustard”

Posted on 2025-02-03 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

When do you give up on your “dreams” and become a “real adult”?

My guests today are Len Falkenstein (Director of Drama at UNB, Grand Poobah of Theatre in Fredericton), Abhi/Naga Abhinav Sujal Kamireddy (“Mustard”) and Maham Raza (“Thai”). In this serious-comedic play, the young adult Thai faces challenges which make her question her relationships, particularly with her imaginary friend, Mustard. They join me to talk about finding their character’s centre, staging a surreal world, and making time for unexpected audience reactions.

Lost & Found – Happy Banjos Play The Beatles by The Big Ben Banjo Band – Ep03

Posted on 2025-01-24 by Bondo Posted in Lost & Found
Released by Capitol Records in 1966, The Big Ben Banjo Band was a musical group pretty much known for their only hit single “Let’s Get Together No. 1” in 1954.

By George-John-Paul-Ringo, they’ve done it! Those Big Ben Banjo Band boys have come up with the greatest new sound since The Beatles beat itself. And wot’s more, luvs, they’ve done it by taking 30 of the biggest Beatles hits with their own sensational instrumental style. Brisk, bright fun you’re in for as these Happy Banjos play those Beatles!
What the English lads (banjos, mandolins, trumpet, trombone, accordion, rhythm) and their leader Norrie Paramor take you to is a bountiful medley-style program that out-mods the mods (and often out-rocks the rockers) with the same enthusiasm that’s made Britain the music mecca of the swinging sixties. In a roguishly paced mood that blends tempos with the witty abandon of a Carnaby Street tailor mixing paisleys, plaids and prints, the Happy Banjos offer such jolly threesomes as A Hard Day’s Night – I Feel Fine – Can’t Buy Me Love. With a wistful bit of witchery they make Michelle – This Boy – Yesterday into one tender theme on the foreverness of love. And finally, rising to giddy heights of tongue-in-cheekery, the Banjo Band has the last word in musical madcap with Tell Me Why – The Word – I’ll Be Back.
