Local historian publishes definitive book on Canadian First World War cap badges

Posted on 2025-05-02 by Aidan Keenan Posted in News

Earlier this month, Fredericton based historian and former president of the York-Sunbury Historical Society, Harold “Hal” Skaarup began distributing his newest book, Canadian Expeditionary Force and Military Cap Badges: York Sunbury Historical Society Fredericton Region Museum Collection.

This new release is over one-thousand pages and catalogues every cap (hat) badge worn by the Canadian military during the First World War, the majority of which were photographed from the Fredericton Region Museum’s collection.

Skaarup hopes that this book will serve as a resource for museums, archives, and enthusiasts to better understand and connect with the past. He also invited interested community members to visit the Fredericton Region Museum to take a look at its reference copy and potentially see the real badges in the Museum’s collection.

Hal Skaarup talked to CHSR News about the significance of cap badges and why he thought it important to create this book.

End of Global Skills Opportunity program means university students will lose key funding source when studying abroad

Posted on 2025-05-02 by Aidan Keenan Posted in News

In March 2025, Employment and Social Development Canada announced that the Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) program would not be renewed after its five year pilot.

Starting in 2019, GSO was established to provide federal grants to Canadian university students participating in international study programs. The program was allotted a five year pilot, at which point the government would review and determine if it would continue. The end of the pilot came in December 2024, and in March 2025 the program was not renewed.

The University of New Brunswick utilized GSO funding to support short term study abroad programs—generally lasting several weeks in the summer (as opposed to long term study abroad semesters). St. Thomas University also used GSO funding to support students.

Esme Newling, STU’s Director of Experiential Learning and Career Development, noted that the end of GSO funding will significantly limit the number of students that participate in study abroad programs at STU—particularly low income students.

Harmony Corruption Episode 91-April 22nd, 2025

Posted on 2025-05-02 by CelestialEmissary Posted in Harmony Corruption, Music Shows

Hi Folks! This week’s episode was recorded in advance as I was unable to come into the studio this week. It features lots of great longer tunes, so it’s a bit different than the Extravagrindza episodes, where 100+ songs are in the queue! As well, Les Binks, drummer of Judas Priest on their fantastic albums “Stained Class,” “Killing Machine,” and “Unleashed In the East.” He will be sorely missed, and he was a truly incredible drummer.

Here’s the playlist for the week:

Judas Priest-Heroes End

Judas Priest-Saints In Hell

Judas Priest-Delivering the Goods

Obituary-Suffocation

Dopethrone-Zombi Powder (Feat. Julie)

Atramentus-Stygian III: Perennial Voyage

Posted on 2025-04-26 by Tim Scammell Posted in Barry Awards, chsr, Current Shows, General, Media, Music, Music Shows, Testing For Echo

Hello there everyone. I trust that all is well and that you’re in the mood for an amazing hour of musical mayhem.

This is episode 74 of Testing For Echo on CHSR FM 97.9 in Fredericton and around the world and I am your host Tim Scammell.

Before we begin I just want to mention that my son Braydon lives in Newfoundland and has been drumming in a great St. John’s band for a while now. The band is Book Club.

I played one of their tracks a while ago.

They’ve released another one. As great as that last one was, I have to say that I prefer this one. Perhaps it’s because of the wild drums.

So let’s turn this up and you’ll see what I mean. It’s your new favourite song.  By the way, If you ever want more info about this band or any others for that matter, send me a note.

Tim

Interview: Amanda Munday (New Majority)

Posted on 2025-04-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

No matter how you look at it, youth are going to be living with the consequences of politics far longer than anyone older.

My guest today is Amanda Munday, the Executive Director of New Majority. Their mission is to “activate young and first-time voters, ensuring [their] voice is heard where it counts”. They recently came to UNB campus to encourage youth to be involved in voting for the federal election, and she joins me to talk about their goals, scope of activities and encouraging people across the country.

The federal election is happening on April 28, but there are opportunities to vote on campus or in other places in advance of the election day. Additional information is available at Elections Canada.

Testing For Echo – Episode 75 – “Testing For Echo and Canadianity eh?” – Orig. Air Date April 12, 2025

Posted on 2025-04-12 by Tim Scammell Posted in Barry Awards, Charting, chsr, Current Shows, General, Media, Music, Music Shows, Testing For Echo

Hello everyone. I trust that all is well and that you’re in the mood for an amazing hour of musical magic.

This is episode 75 of Testing For Echo on CHSR FM 97.9 in Fredericton and around the world and I am your host Tim Scammell.

Today is a very special episode all about Canadians eh?

When we do our shows on here there is a requirement that we use at least 30-40 % of Canadian content in each show.

Well guess what? Today I’m cranking that up to 100% Canadian content. Even the show ID’s between songs are purely Canadian.

Why am I doing this you may ask?

Without getting all political, we hosers have been taking a little bit of slapping around from certain people in high places south of the border.

So this is about showing some love and pouring some virtual maple syrup over your sour cream glazed donuts. We shall call this one “Testing For Echo and Canadianity eh?” “

I’m pretty certain that I will be doing this again in the future. After all there is a TON of great Canadianity out there to share.

Another really cool thing is that most of these folks are friends of the show or people that I wish to meet some day.

Sadly, there are a couple that have left us.

But enjoy this eh?

The World of Music, One Song at a Time, Proudly Canadian – Take Good Care

Episode Song List

  1. Envy of None – The Story
  2. Spiritbox – Jaded
  3. Book Club – Laugh or Cry
  4. Not Now – Hear Me Now
  5. MELO – Paralyzed
  6. Josh Norrad – Backroads
  7. SAGA – Vital Signs
  8. Stompin’ Tom Connors – My Stompin’ Grounds
  9. RUSH – Mystic Rhythms
  10. Red Moon Road – I’ll Bend But I Won’t Break
  11. Kylie Fox – Sequoia
  12. Marcello Churleo – Walk In The Sun

Posted on 2025-04-04 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The nature of artists is often change, growth and experimentation.

My guests today are John Heinstein and Peter Hicks, core members of the band Sleepy Driver (among other projects). They join me to talk about exploring new directions with the band, including many of the changes it has already had over its 20 year history, and the many friends they have a chance to work with.

A new album from Sleepy Driver should be in the works over the next year, and singles are being released in the mean time. You can catch them at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre with several of their friends for a concert on April 12.
