Interview: Greg Davies, “Chronos”

Posted on 2025-03-12 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Sometimes, it takes beautifully-made art to show us the terrible things we might not know.

My guest today is Greg Davies, a painter, art historian, educator and administrator. His collection Chronos is part of the 2025 UNB Art Centre World Water Day showing, running from March 7 to May 2. He joins me to talk about how he came to paint portraits of extinct and perishing animals, the intent and emotion behind the project, and the choice of style to convey the point.

Chronos by Greg Davies is featured alongside works by Noah Poirier and Kyle Goguen in the World Water Day exhibition which opens on March 7 and runs to May 2 at the UNB Art Centre’s galleries in the Memorial Hall building on UNB campus.

Harmony Corruption Reviews: Riot-Thundersteel

Posted on 2025-03-11 by CelestialEmissary Posted in Harmony Corruption, Music Reviews, Reviews

Riot - ThunderSteel (1988, Vinyl) | Discogs

And We Ride, Thundering Into the Sky – 100%*

Riot’s Thundersteel is one of the purest distillations of heavy metal I can think of. This album storms out of the gate and doesn’t truly let up throughout it’s concise 46 minute runtime. I don’t feel many albums deserve the 100%. but this one earns it.

Riot is a band that had no shortage of turbulence throughout their decades of activity. They went through members faster than I can recite them, but this album represented the band’s closest foray to a consistent lineup, as the following album had all the same members. This lineup (with the ever-persistent underdog Mark Reale on guitars leading the way) manages to sound like a well-oiled machine throughout Thundersteel.

I first stumbled upon this album via Angrymetalguy’s “Yer Metal Is Olde” article a few years ago, and had not heard much Riot other than the 2 (relative) hits “Fire Down Under” and “Swords and Tequila.” I knew the band often had rather hilarious album art, but didn’t know much about their music. I gave “On Wings of Eagles” a shot and was stunned. How had I missed this album up until that point?

After tracking down a CD of this album, I began listening to it on repeat, and each playthrough seemed to be better than the last. While not a hard album to get into, this album throws earworm after earworm at you, and it’s easy to miss them at first glance. This album often gets classified as power metal, which I think is fair, but for those weary of that subgenre like myself, don’t run away at the mention of power metal alone. If you enjoy Iron Maiden’s gallop, there’s something here for you. Tony Moore’s vocals also truly shine here, and are a bit more easygoing than Rob Halford’s rather frenetic “Painkiller” performance (which I absolutely adore). I typically stick to the more extreme metal end of the spectrum, but this album, alongside Helloween’s first 3 full lengths, Savatage’s great run of albums through the ’80s and ’90s and Cirith Ungol’s discography all wave the flag high for heavy metal/power metal.

I want to touch on the production of this album, as it’s an oddity in that regard. Roughly half of the songs on this album have Mark Edwards on drums (Fight or Fall, Sign of the Crimson Storm, On Wings of Eagles, and Bloodstreets). I find that these 4 songs sound a bit different. Mark Edwards’ drumming is most distinct on “On Wings of Eagles,” where he achieves a shuffle-like sound with his double-kick work. The guitar tone on the songs with Edwards on drums is a bit crunchier, and the palm-muted tone has a bit more heft to it. As well, the bass sticks out significantly more on these tracks, and even inserts a number of fills. This makes the stringed instruments much thicker, and the bass tone in particular truly complements the low-end and fills out the sound nicely. This is one of my favourite metal albums for bass tone just off these 4 tracks alone.

On the rest of the songs, Bobby Jarzombek does a great job behind the kit. However, the production on the 5 songs with Jarzombek on drums are different in terms of production. They sound a bit thinner, and the drums have a bit less reverb overall. The bass still sticks out on these tracks (especially Johnny’s Back), but the tone isn’t quite as thick as the Edwards tracks. The guitars still sound fantastic, but the palm-muted tone in particular is not quite as thick. As a small aside, the vocals sound like they’re mixed about the same between the otherwise different sounding instrumental backdrop as far as I can tell.

Now, I think if you truly needed to encapsulate why people love metal, just play “On Wings of Eagles” and “Bloodstreets” off this album. On Wings of Eagles is a raging track with soaring vocals, throbbing bass, and truly grabs the listener from the drum intro. Bloodstreets shows the more dynamic side of both metal and this album. It features acoustic guitars, whistling, and a small touch of synthesizer before picking up to a mid-tempo trot. I think this album expresses the triumph over perpetual underdog status that Mark Reale had struggled with for years. Bloodstreets’ lyrics seem quite poignant in the context of the band’s history up to this point. Keep in mind, Mark Reale had left New York City by the time he was writing Thundersteel, and had essentially given up on Riot. He formed a new band down in Texas called Narita with a whole new lineup before reconfiguring the band into the new incarnation of Riot.

This is not to dismiss the rest of the album. After all, it’s getting the venerable perfect 100%. Each track justifies itself and adds something a bit different. While I have always held side B to be a bit better than Side A, there is no weak spots to be found here. While not an experimental album in the typical sense of the word, the closer “Buried Alive (Tell Tale Heart)” expands on the template set by slower songs like “Johnny’s Back” and “Bloodstreets” but adds an extra dose of atmosphere through more extensive use of synthesizer, multi-layered harmonized guitars, and bells. This track hints at the experimentation Mark Reale would go much further with on the next couple of albums.

While Riot would tumble back into tough times after the following album, Thundersteel represents Riot and metal at its best. For a brief moment in 1988, Riot was hungry and firing on all cylinders. This album is an absolute must-listen for anyone and everyone who loves metal.

Harmony Corruption Reviews: Trouble-Trouble (1990)

Posted on 2025-03-11 by CelestialEmissary Posted in Harmony Corruption, Music Reviews, Reviews

Couverture D'Album: Trouble - Trouble

Trouble Goes Retro – 95%*

Trouble’s 4th album (and second self-titled, for some bizarre reason) is in many ways Trouble moving forward and backward. This album is their most 70s sounding album up to this point, as they take their already noticeable Sabbathian influences a few steps further and push their 70s doom and rock inspiration to the forefront of their sound. There is a noticeable shift from their occasional thrashy outbursts found on the previous three albums, as this album settles in to a mid-paced groove for the most part. The only notable exception to this is parts of “The Wolf” and “R.I.P.”

Luckily, Trouble nails the 70s sound in 1990 better than anyone else I can think of. This album has no shortage of brilliant tunes, and most of the songs are kept on the shorter side at around 3-4 minutes.

The guitar leads, once again, are a highlight on “Trouble.” The closer, “All Is Forgiven” is my favourite song on this album, partially due to Eric Wagner’s soul-shredding vocal performance, and partially due to the extended guitar lead section in the last 3 minutes. It’s a brilliant way to end an album, and end an era, as Trouble would shift gears further into a 70s rock sound after this album. It’s reminiscent of some of Tony Iommi’s best guitar outros on songs like “Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener,” “Under the Sun,” “Hot Line,” “Dirty Women,” and “Born Again.” “All Is Forgiven” is not only the best song on this album, but also one of the greatest songs in Trouble’s discography.

While “All Is Forgiven” is the biggest standout, It’s far from the only fantastic song on this album. “At the End of My Daze”, “Black Shapes of Doom,” “Heaven On My Mind,” and “R.I.P.” are all masterful. Some of them are doomier, others are hooky stomps, and they manage to nail all these different sounds in a way that prevents this album from getting stuck in a sonic rut.

The one weak point of this album is the ballad, “The Misery Shows (Act II).” It’s not horrid by any stretch, but just feels like a bit of a dud when put up against any of the other songs on this album. It also doesn’t really go progress in a satisfying way. Not a bad tune, but if all the songs on the album were of this quality, the rating I’m giving it would be quite a bit different. Eric Wagner does get to show off a different range than he normally sings in on this song, and that makes it worthwhile to listen to.

The production on “Trouble” is excellent and suits these songs perfectly. The guitar tone is heavy, but fairly low on reverb. It’s fairly trebly, but not to the point of being shrill. This may be in part due to Trouble having more than one guitarist, which fattens up the sound of the guitars (just listen to 3:11 onward on “All is Forgiven” when the guitarists harmonize to see the effect dual guitars have on the thickness of guitar tone). This guitar tone really makes the lead guitar sections stand out, and it just works fantastically. The drums sound great on here, with a great, punchy snare sound. They are played well, but aren’t the standout here. The bass also helps fill out the sound well, but isn’t particularly active, as it mostly follows the rhythm guitar line.

Eric Wagner’s voice slots right in, and he seems to take a semi-similar vocal approach to Ozzy, as he typically sings along the guitar’s riffing. Tonally, they both take on a semi-shrill yelp. However, he wasn’t afraid to deviate from the riffing, which is something Ozzy rarely ever does. This makes his vocal lines more interesting to listen to, as they’re a bit less predictable.

“Trouble” (the 1990 one, not the album since retitled “Psalm 9”) is either my favourite or second favourite album by Trouble ever since I first heard it about 7 years ago. It was also the first Trouble album I ever got a physical copy of. My particular copy is a remastered version that comes in a nice glossy slipcase. There are no bonus tracks or anything like that, but it’s a nice package altogether. I wouldn’t say this is the best album to get into Trouble with, in part due to how it’s a bit of an outlier in Trouble’s broader discography (their preceding three albums are all a bit more heavy, doomy, and thrashy), and the next album went a bit more psychedelic. However, it’s in my top two alongside its namesake counterpart. The Skull and Run to the Light are not far off by any stretch though, and the first 4 Trouble albums are all must-listens for any doom metal acolytes.

Ignore the fact that the album cover on this album is way worse than the previous three albums, which all had super neat, ethereal-looking art. Having a band photo as an album cover isn’t a searing indictment of the album’s quality necessarily, but is not particularly creative. I would say this album cover works, as this album takes a very blue collar approach to doom metal, but for anyone in a band reading this, please don’t make a band photo your album cover. Get an artist!

To close, “Trouble” isn’t some transcendental experience. It’s doom metal done well by dudes who know how to write doom metal well. It’s a great album, and I would love to see other bands use the blueprint from this album and run with it.

History is often just a list of facts and events and actors, but to better understand it, it may need other things that fiction brings best.

My guest today is Thomas Hodd, the Saint John playwright behind an upcoming Theatre NB production of O’Brien. He joins me to talk about the origins of this play, a story which he first encountered when he was a youth working at a museum.

O’Brien opens on March 5 at TNB’s Open Space Theatre and runs until the 8th, at which time it begins a tour of the province before returning back to the Open Space Theatre for it’s last performance on March 16. See the TNB website for more details.

Interview: TheatreUNB presents Kat Sandler’s “Mustard”

Posted on 2025-02-03 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

When do you give up on your “dreams” and become a “real adult”?

My guests today are Len Falkenstein (Director of Drama at UNB, Grand Poobah of Theatre in Fredericton), Abhi/Naga Abhinav Sujal Kamireddy (“Mustard”) and Maham Raza (“Thai”). They join me to talk about the upcoming TheatreUNB presentation of Kat Sandler’s Mustard. In this serious-comedic play, the young adult Thai faces challenges which make her question her relationships, particularly with her imaginary friend, Mustard. They join me to talk about finding their character’s centre, staging a surreal world, and making time for unexpected audience reactions.

Mustard runs February 5 through 8 at 7:30pm nightly at UNB’s Memorial Hall.
