CHSR News – November 6th, 2024 – Fredericton City Budget To See Decreased Inside Tax Rates, More Frequent Transit Services

Posted on 2024-11-06 by Johnny James Posted in CHSR News, General, News

Fredericton City Council has agreed, in principle, to a 180-million dollar proposed budget during their last council-in-committee meeting before it goes for an official vote on November 25th.

The city saw a 6.98% assessment base increase in property value over the last fiscal year, 2.3% due to new construction and a 4.68% market assessment increase, which has prompted a proposed 2 cent decrease in the inside residential tax rate, for residents with full access to city services, from 1.3286 to 1.3086 dollars per 100$ in assessed value.

It will also see an increase in transit, with high traffic routes during weekday service being increased to every half hour, and as a result will see increases in rates for four-hour parking meters and both hourly and monthly parking rates in the city’s garages and car parks.

Listen to hear more details on the budget as a whole and the impending changes.

CHSR News – November 5th, 2024 – Fredericton’s Net Zero Greenhouse receives international recognition

Posted on 2024-11-05 by Johnny James Posted in CHSR News, General, News

The City of Fredericton recently received three awards at the Communities in Bloom National & International Awards in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Two of the awards went to the city’s Net Zero Greenhouse project, which launched back in March. They received the Healthier, Livable Cities Award and the Tree Management award for its efforts towards tree care across the region.

The greenhouse houses 5000 tree seedlings that will eventually be planted in various greenspaces around the region and produces a net of zero emissions through natural lighting, irrigation and temperature control using an Earth battery. It aims at maintaining the municipalities urban forest, high percentage of canopy cover and collecting seeds to maintain the growth of native species to Fredericton.

Interview: UNB CSA’s Extra Life Gaming Marathon

Posted on 2024-11-01 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Games are a lot of fun, and a great excuse to help people who need it.

My guest today is Tanzim Bint Abdul Majid, the President of the UNB Computer Science Association (CSA). She joins me to talk about the upcoming fun annual fundraiser the CSA is hosting: a 24-hour gaming marathon, part of the global Extra Life organization. She joins me to talk about the kinds of games and other activities they will be keeping their participants busy with for the 24-hour stretch, as well the organization which will be receiving the funds (The IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax).

The UNB CSA Extra Life Gaming Marathon starts on 8am on Saturday, November 2 and ends at 7am on Sunday, November 3. (The time difference is due to the clock change this weekend.)

The event is open to anyone to participate, not just members of the CSA. From their event:

This is an in-person event. We will try to include a few virtual components, so that CSA Extra Life team members who are unable to attend in person (e.g. those not in Fredericton) may join in some of the fun, but most of the planned events (e.g. tournaments, etc.) will be held in person.

To participate in this event, please go to https://www.extra-life.org/team/UNBCSA and click “Join our team”. When registering, you may select to support any one of the hospitals listed (our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital is the IWK in Halifax, NS). You may also choose to be a “classic” (free) or “platinum” (US$19) player. As a platinum player, you can unlock special prizes from Extra Life when you reach certain fundraising milestones.

To be eligible for CSA Extra Life tournaments, prize draws, etc. during the event, we also require all attendees to raise at least CDN$15 (US$11) before game day. If you are unable to fundraise this money prior to the event, you will be required to contribute $15 towards our team fundraising for full access to the fun & rewards that we have planned. So from now until November 2nd, ask your friends, family, and community to sponsor you in support of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital of your choosing.

Posted on 2024-10-30 by Johnny James Posted in CHSR News, General, News
Recently retired University of New Brunswick military history professor Brent Wilson launched his latest and final contribution to the New Brunswick Military Heritage Book Series this week. War Among The Clouds: New Brunswick Airmen In The Great War, is the third title in the series authored by Wilson, who is a co-founder and has been the editor of the series since it started in 2003. The 31st book in the series, which Wilson said was created to fill in the gaps in New Brunswick’s military history, documents the 252 New Brunswick soldiers who served as airmen in the Great War from 1914-18, the first conflict where aircrafts played a significant role. Wilson tells CHSR News about the stories his new book tells and the impact and legacy he hopes the now completed series will leave.

CHSR News – October 28th, 2024 – UNB Reds fall short In final, but qualify for Nationals in Atlantic University Sport Playoffs

Posted on 2024-10-28 by Johnny James Posted in CHSR News, General, News

The University of New Brunswick Reds fell just short of completing a trifecta of upsets as they hosted the Atlantic University Sport men’s soccer playoffs this past weekend at their home field the BMO Centre.

UNB knocked off the second-ranked Memorial Sea-Hawks 3-2 in their semi-final on Friday, just a day after upsetting the third-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies. Sending them to the final against the defending champs the St. Francis Xavier X-Men and clinching a birth in the U Sports National Championship being held at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa, Ontario.

Then in the final, the Reds were topped by a late goal by STFX captain Kyle Cordeiro with six minutes to go in extra time, falling just short of capturing the title.

Have a listen to get the team’s reaction to the highs and lows of their playoff run.
