And tune in to the Mansion tomorrow for a Motherhood concert, too!.
  • The Midway rides are back! East Coast Amusements has rented space at the New Brunswick Provincial Exhibition.  ECA is following all COVID-19 protocols and has been approved by the province. Without a source of income ECA could potentially go out of business leaving the NBEX without rides for future fairs and exhibitions. During this time it is important to support businesses within your province to help the economy. We suggest to all that only those who feel comfortable come and enjoy the rides. Hours are Friday July 17th 12pm – Close; Saturday July 18th 12pm – Close; Sunday July 19th 12pm – Close; July 23-26 Hours to be determined.
  • No Masks – Enough is Enough protest
On Sunday at 3pm, people are asked to go to Wilmot Park to March to the Legislative Assembly, calling for the end of masks. I urge you to go — and wear a mask, and protest against the foolhardiness that puts minimal personal comfort over maximal public safety and health.

Why wear a seatbelt? Aren’t casts terribly inconvenient? Why have an emergency exit? We’ve been lucky, we’ve been diligent, we’ve taken precautions — and yet there are outbreaks, due to human error or bad luck. The virus isn’t even half-way done with the world yet. Have patience — or become the next patients. Be careful — or you become careless. Take a little discomfort to prevent discomfort, illness, permanent damage or even death. No one likes wearing masks, but by wearing them now, you won’t be wearing them forever.

Wishing the virus away doesn’t work. Wearing masks, the very least you can do to save everyone else, helps. Not gathering in groups, being aware of your own symptoms, supporting the organizations and researchers and health professionals and leaders who are working to find a vaccine and find therapeutic treatments, that’s what you can do.

But protesting about being uncomfortable supporting even the least you can do? You look childish and selfish. You look manipulated and unfeeling. You look vulnerable and ignorant.

Hide all that — with a mask.
  • Today, we enjoy my chat yesterday with members of the Fibre Arts Network (FAN) who have been in residence at Odell Park this past two weeks. Jackie has been working on embroidery (see her Instagram page); Caroline is a (rug) hooker (see her Instagram page); Karen is a weaver (see her Facebook page); and Renata is working on textile design (see her website). Another member, Darcy, is working on quilting, but we weren’t able to connect with her in time (see her Etsy page).
  • We also include a couple of songs: Don’t Get Me Started from Sleepy Driver’s new album; and the song Heroes by Wicked Vices.

News update:

  • New Brunswick Public Health reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.
  • A program offered by the province that aims to support and mentor women in apprenticeable trades has been extended.
  • One of the largest employers in McAdam is halting production at its gypsum wallboard plant by next month.
  • A judge in Saint John sentenced a Newfoundland man to three years in prison on Wednesday following child pornography charges.
  • Codiac RCMP is still on the lookout for a missing teenager from Moncton.
  • Thanks to a large research grant, staff from the University of New Brunswick will pursue 13 projects related to COVID-19.

On today’s show:

  • Beware! They can lurk anywhere… It’s Shark Awareness Day. (Ok, let’s just admit it’s an excuse to binge stuff on Shark Week on TV…)

  • Today is Mac & Cheese Day… Didn’t we just have that?
  • It’s also Grand Marnier Day, so there will be many people who decide that “orange” is an acceptable breath flavour.

The Lunchbox 2020-07-13: Here, There and Everywhere

Posted on 2020-07-13 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The LOn today’s show:

  • Can it be a coincidence that today is both French Fries Day and Beef Tallow Day? I’m suspicious.. and hungry.
  • It’s International Rock Day, and while I could have looked up whether it’s about rolling rocks gathering no moss, or rock ‘n’ roll, I still feel like it is still appropriate either way.
  • We could all use a good laugh, so remember that while the first night of the The Cap Comedy Night is sold out, a second night on Thursday still has tickets! Headlined by Jimmy MacKinley, hosted by Matt Richardson. With Paul Lewis, Anthony Bryan, and Maggie Estey. Tickets: https://bit.ly/CapComedy2
  • The Delta Drive-In this week is celebrating Christmas in July: “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” on July 17 and July 18. I wonder if they will have turkey and eggnog at the restaurant?
  • This week, we look back at the 2016 TNB production of Marion Bridge with Thomas Morgan Jones, and a 2015 interview about a still-current issue of Fossil Free UNB. I also bust out a little meloncholy Del Bel, not entirely not because it mentions cold weather…

It’s a brand new episode with a bunch of music from previous episodes, newer episodes, and the newest episode! Which tells you that this episode is.. a lot like the others in that sense!

Honestly, I’m going a bit stir-crazy here. Fortunately, there’s good horizons of awesome music coming our way, and I’ll hint at it both in the podcast, and then just outright play it, and.. probably just list it below, too.

Okay, that’s enough.

Posted on 2020-07-07 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • Can’t we all just get along? Today should be the day, combining Tell The Truth Day with Global Forgiveness Day, along with post-fight… post-discussion goodies like Chocolate Day, Strawberry Sundae Day and Macaroni Day. But let us not remember out steaks and milk, because it’s also Cow Appreciation Day.

  • Peter Hansen and Andrew Kenny will be performing at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre at 7pm on Thursday night. Tickets are limited, only cost $15, and are available at the door, so head in early!
  • We’re revisiting art again today, from speaking to Katherine Moller during her busy song-writing residency in 2016, to talking with Maria Maltais  of the UNB Art Centre about newly-added elements to the permanent collection in in 2018. Enjoy these interviews!

The Lunchbox 2020-07-06: Capturing A Moment

Posted on 2020-07-06 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

On today’s show:

  • It’s International Kissing Day, which has got to be one of the best ways to make it through a Monday! Unless you are not seeing anyone, and then it’s just all those annoying PDAs..
  • Take your mind off your troubles and eat some food that’s probably not the best for you on Fried Chicken Day. Unless you’re vegetarian, of course.
  • We are all starting to appreciate all the people who work online, so the fact that it’s both Virtually Hug a Virtual Assistant Day and Take Your Webmaster To Lunch Day seems suddenly more appropriate than ever. But aren’t most of us virtual assistants now?
  • And finally, it’s Umbrella Cover Day. I’m sure this will ignite a thousand debates about the usefulness of a pouch for your umbrella (to protect it against what, exactly?), but at least that seems like a less politically-charged conversation than most we’re having this days… Although it does involve the weather, peripherally..
  • Both the Fredericton Arts Alliance and The City of Fredericton are starting their artists-in-residence programs for this summer this week, although the FAA one is entirely virtual, and the city’s program is a mix of virtual and in-person. I’ll see who I can get a chance to talk to this summer!
  • The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is going to host Peter Hansen this week for a LIVE & IN PERSON event. They’ve taken considerable precautions to make sure its a safe event, so check it out! Doors open at 7pm, show goes until 9pm, and tickets are $15 at the door. See the Facebook event for more details.
  • We could all use a good laugh these days, and The Cap is inviting you to join them for a few. They originally booked a Comedy Night on July 15, but that event SOLD OUT quickly. They have now added Comedy Night 2 on July 16, where you’ll be able to headliner Jimmy MacKinley and locals Paul Lewis, Anthony Bryan, Maggie Estey. The nights will be hosted by Matt Richardson. Tickets (still available!) for the second night are at https://bit.ly/CapComedy2 . Please note: tickets are sold per table, and you will be seated & served as per our return to live event protocols.
  • This weekend, TNB Presents a Heist Pride Takeover on Zoom! DJ! Drag Performances! Dancing! Lip Sync Roulette! Costumes! Prizes! Join us for a Takeover Party in a Zoom room and find some Queer community within your distancing! Starts on Sunday at 7pm. See the Facebook event for more details.
  • Today, I looked back to the summer of 2016, when I learned a thing or six from Rachel Watters about watercolour painting. Also, before I got to see a surprising and moving modern play called Bone Cage in 2018, I sat down with TUNB’s Len Falkenstein, Alex Pannier and Devin Rockwall.

News today:

  • Over the weekend, New Brunswick reported no new cases of COVID-19 for its 12th day in a row.
  • With lower than usual rainfall and higher temperatures still to come, New Brunswickers are being encouraged to conserve water.
  • A St. Stephen man faces attempted murder charges after assaulting an older man on Canada Day.
  • A Canadian Forces Reserves member from Manitoba faces 22 criminal charges after breaching the gate at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
  • Saint John Mayor Don Darling hopes to make racism a punishable offence when he raises a motion to city council tonight.
  • CN Rail announced it would invest 20 million dollars in the province over the next year to refurbish its local infrastructure.
  • And American rapper Kanye West announced he will run in this year’s presidential election against Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

RFYL Episode – FeeblemindEP124

Posted on 2020-07-03 by Matt Nightingale Posted in Run For Your Life!

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

I love it when I go to edit my post and somehow realize that the episode from three weeks ago didn’t ever actually go out – it went out live, but the podcast didn’t. DOUBLE THE PODCAST NOW I GUESS.

Anyway, I’m still struggling with my voice and there’s no real change. So why would I change up my formula? Today is BANDCAMP DAY, so go over to and spend some money so it’ll go directly to bands.

Escape – KONGOS
Feelin’ Better – Cory Hotline
Rattle My Brain / New Sway – Powder for Pigeons
Turn To Grey – Elektric Mistress
Fool’s Gold – Reignwolf
Future Sun / Turning Point – Sacrifice to Survive
