  • Join with others in Carleton Park on Canada Day for a 60 minute outdoor yoga class! (Although if it rains, it will be online.)

• While we many not be gathering in dark rooms just yet, but it looks like we’re going to have some theatre back this year! Notable Acts is calling for actors to put on a form of its annual new play/new playwright festival. Herbert The Cow Productions and Nasty Shadows Theatre Company are partnering up to bring The Fifth Wall this fall, billed as “Fredericton’s first (and hopefully NOT annual) social distancing show”.
• The Cultural Expression Festival is continuing this week with cultural spotlights on Iran and the Phillippines, and a Living Library!
• Today I looked back to 2014 to listen to Josh from Kuato talk about The Great Upheaval, and I paired it with the song Battle of Blood Creek from that album.
• We also listened to my 2014 interview with political cartoonist Michael deAdder, on the publication of his collection entitled You Might Be From New Brunswick If….

• After a full crown land closure over the past week, the Department of Natural Resources has lifted all restrictions.
• Campbellton RCMP is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing woman from Dalhousie.
  A man from Saint Ignace is facing drug trafficking charges after police executed a search warrant at A home on Gallant Street.
• The owner of Boom! Nightclub announced on social media it will shut down.
• And after four years without one, the Village of Gagetown had its maiden voyage for its brand new river ferry yesterday.

• I ran out of time to tell you, but today is Women in Engineering Day, Public Service Day and Let It Go Day. So clearly, it means it’s time to leave your old prejudices behind, celebrate and support girls who want to go into engineering, and to remember that the people in public service are people trying to do their best in a time when none of us is really sure about what that is.
• I revisited a very old interview and a relatively new album. I brought out my 2013 interview with Jessica Rhaye on the occasion of her then-new release Far Gone Lullabies, and paired it with tracks from the current release, her album with The Ramshackle Parade covering Bob Dylan songs called Just Like A Woman: Songs of Bob Dylan. We heard One More Cup Of Coffee and Ring Them Bells.
• We also heard my visit with Beth Bird & Dustin Forbes, who were working together to create shadow puppet theatre in the Barracks last summer. Seems like ages ago, but I’m looking forward to visiting artists in residence again — next summer.
• Transit will grow again in Fredericton, Saint John and Moncton, but masks will be required
  The transit systems in these three cities have come together to create a unified operational plan to allow more passengers to take the bus during the continuance of the pandemic. To ensure safety, they are going to have a few rules in place, however:
  • Masks will be required, with exceptions for children under 2 and those with medical conditions that exempt them (as per the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer of Health of NB).
  • Seating will be increased, but limited to no more than 50% capacity. Social distancing will be necessary, so spacing will be indicated.
  • Seats directly behind the driver remain off-limits. The driver needs to be protected, because they have the largest possible exposure time.
  • Mask use will be monitored. So long as we all play along, they can grow more service over time.
  • Passengers are encouraged to bring and use hand sanitizer.

• New Brunswick Public Health reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.
• It will be the luck of the draw for New Brunswickers wanting to access a popular spot for salmon fishing this summer.
• The Department of Natural Resources closed all crown land across the province on Friday after extremely dry weather conditions.
• The COVID-19 pandemic is not stopping the City of Fredericton from hosting summer recreation activities.
• The Codiac RCMP is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing boy from Moncton.
• Ottawa has signed an agreement with 15 indigenous communities across Atlantic Canada today to transfer water and wastewater services to the AFNWA.
• And Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement this morning on National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.

• The heat makes it perfect to celebrate Sauntering Day and act like a role model of relaxation with Garfield the Cat Day. It also happens to be Take Back The Lunch Break Day and Martini Day, so at least some of you might combine those celebrations, too..
• But most importantly, it’s Juneteenth. In the United States, this day commemorates the end of slavery, not just in principal, but in the public declarations that swept across Texas and the rest of the states and provided real action and change. The celebration has grown over the years, and this year, might be more important than ever before. While I’m not that familiar with it, and it is primarily an American celebration, it feels important to take a moment to celebrate, reflect and consider how racism has affected our society, and how we can work to eliminate it.
• FOOD MARKET AT THE EX SET TO OPEN JUNE 26
  After the sudden closure of the Northside Market, several food vendors were left scrambling for a new place to set up shop.
  
  It looks like the newest place is going to be at the Ex! The Capital Exhibition Grounds, with a wave of closures of events caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, has worked to create a brand-new grab-and-go food market in it’s parking lot. 10 buildings are in place, going through the process of inspection, and will house food vendors starting on June 26th, barring any unexpected problems. Currently scheduled to be available is food from: Tan Bueno (Mexican), Cook Wi A Cook (Jamaican), Zensations (vegetarian), Dan’s Sausages, J’s Asian Kitchen, Street Greek, Country Fried, Syrian Delights, The Korean Kitchen and Big John’s Spiral Potatoes. The market will plan to run on Fridays from 11am to 7pm, Saturdays from 9am to 4pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm. They also promise to have a very environmentally friendly market, with no single-use plastics and recyclable containers.
• The latest Revelation from the UNB Art Centre opens on Friday at 5pm: Dark Knight, featuring works by Burton Glendenning, Chris Giles, Julie MacIntyre, Alex Colvile, Roger Smith (interview on website) and Catherine Hale; and Memento Mori featuring the works of Cliff Turner, Jessie Babin, Cathy Ross, Susan Patterson, Karen Ruet, and Peter Powning.
• The Tipsy Muse welcomes you back for live, in-person music with their Mellow Yellow Concert Series. These shows will come with the necessary precautions in order to maintain social distancing, including: a limit of 25 people; no tables; patrons will order with text from their seats; customers will buy tickets in bubbles of 2 to 4. For all shows, doors will open by 6pm, and the shows kick off sharp at 7pm. First show is scheduled for Friday, June 19 with Colin Fowlie, and then on Saturday, June 20 with The Tortoise, The Hare and the Millionaire.
• We’re a far distance from being able to enjoy all our performances in person, and some of the digital offerings allow us to connect with musicians from all over. • While it was International Picnic Day and Go Fishing Day, it was clearly a day for avoiding the outside altogether. Good news! You can celebrate International Sushi Day.
• It was also International Panic Day, but with everything that’s already going on, we can probably skip that one and focus on being more calm.
• Do you remember what time of year it is? You can be forgiven for forgetting, but normally around now we’d be considering some wonderful gatherings like the Cultural Expressions Festival. Well, good news: they have gone online with the festival, and are extended from June 18 to July 1. I sat down with Gerry Brom of the CEF in 2017 to talk about the festival. In that year, they were aligning with the Canada 150 celebrations, and decided to celebrate all cultures together. Normally, they choose a specific culture to highlight, and for 2020 they have chosen Latin American culture. So, join in, celebrate the multicultural diversity our country has. • Solo Chicken Productions has a track record of supporting diverse theatre, and I revisited my interview with Lisa Ann Ross about A Record of Us in 2016. This year, SCP is once again supporting the Plain Site Theatre Festival. The festival’s final form is likely to be digital this year, but they are accepting submissions immediately for LGBTQIA2+ plays to produce as readings and discuss in workshops this fall, and be full productions in 2021. The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2020.

• And Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has come under fire after calling Bloc Quebecois MP Alain Therrien a racist.

The Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) for people made unemployed due to COVID-19 is not enough to cover the rent of many people. With provinces largely responsible for housing, what can New Brunswick, a province considered to have the worst tenant rights of any Canadian province, with no tenants’ association, do to counter the powerful landlord lobby that threatens to make more people homeless? Although the New Brunswick government had imposed a moratorium on evictions for tenants who could not pay their rent because of COVID-19, the government lifted that moratorium on May 31”. • This Saturday, the City will be doing a special curbside cleanup to collect the debris of the severe thunderstorm of last week. Have your materials bundled or bagged and at the curbside by 7am on Saturday. This is for smaller debris and yard waste only.
• Theatre New Brunswick has announced that it is doing Summer Theatre Camps. It has worked out safer ways to do it with respect to COVID-19, and will give kids (and parents!) a much-needed relief from being at home all the time.
• The Boyce Farmer’s Market will open on Saturday this week. While they have reduced capacity and vendors, it’s important for all of us to find ways to support them with patience and patronage. The market opens at 8am on Saturday and runs until 1pm.
• This Saturday at 1pm, there will be a Healing Walk in Memory & Justice for Chantel Moore, starting at City Hall downtown. Friends, family and allies are asked to join, but are also asked to respect the protocols established for the event.

    Our Healing Walk should never be called a “protest”, this is not our traditional word, we instead use “Ikatomone”(eek-gut-moh-neh) which translates to “let’s guard” our way of life, our languages, our ceremonies, our rights to declare justice.

    Our Sacred Drums will soothe our shared anguish as we converge our thoughts to healing Chantel’s family and her memory.

    Our Sacred Pipes will invoke our power to connect to our ancestors who are walking with us within our DNA

    Our Red Shawls will be a symbol for all MMIWG and their families.

    Our Moccasins will allow us to walk with stamina a gift from our four legged relatives and mostly to leave our sacred tracks to honour those who went before us and to leave behind for those yet to be born!

    Please keep in mind to follow our safety precautions of social distancing, hand sanitizing and wearing masks to remain safe from Covid-19.

    Regardless of race or background, we ask that you follow the protocol. The  protocols keep us safe, and maintain our intention. We encourage you to remember Chantel in these ways:

    •  Wear gold and yellow. Chantel’s catchphrase was, “stay golden!”. We honour her by wearing gold and yellow
    • Wearing rainbows. Shortly after Chantel’s life was tragically lost at the hands of the police officer, a rainbow emerged in the sky.

    • Bring your drums, shakers, art, and signs

• Today, we revisit two artists who use art to help understanding of marginalized or misunderstood groups. Natalia Sappier is an indigenous multi-disciplinary artist who joined me in 2019 to talk about her theatre-and-music project while in residency at the UNB Art Centre. Alex Rioux is involved in multiple aspects of theatre in the city, and joined me in 2018 to talk about the production of Fruit Machine.

• Two staff members from the Campbellton Regional Hospital are New Brunswick’s latest cases of COVID-19. 
• The City of Fredericton has planned a photo trail for high school graduations after COVID-19 impacted prom, graduation ceremonies and safe grad events.
• Fredericton police arrested 28-year-old William Vrolyk on Tuesday after connections to several outstanding crimes.
• 34-year-old Peter Thomas Poirier now faces additional charges about a robbery and not stopping for police in Moncton and Dieppe.
• The New Brunswick Social Work Association is calling for mental health professionals to be involved in police wellness checks.
• The federal government is taking action to support and stabilize the economy by promising New Brunswick $45 million from the Gas Tax Fund. 
• And Canadian Blood Services hopes people across the country will consider donating blood or plasma despite COVID-19.
