The Lunchbox/Real Life Survivor: Karen Richardson (December 2019)

Posted on 2019-12-20 by encaf1 Posted in Real Life Survivor, The Lunchbox

For December, Julie Comeau and Mark spoke to Karen Richardson, a woman from Texas who was diagnosed with a rare skin condition called Jessners Benign, which is brought on because of her fight against Lupus.

Karens’ condition brings on daily struggles with very red skin, tiredness and weakness.

Karen is also a Real Life Survivor of anxiety and depression, and battles with weight loss and weight gain in her daily life. She also, at a young age, faces the journey of a widow.

Each month, RealLifeSurvivor profiles a person who has gone through trauma and difficulty and emerged on the other side stronger and with a fuller appreciation of life.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks
Ten years. Ten crazy, weird, bizarre years of only missing maybe two episodes every year to record this weird show (or do it live) every Friday at 5 PM. That’s just so weird to think of. I’ve met a lot of great people, expanded my music library by quite a lot, and become more of a troll on a possibly antiquated form of media that is fortunately still digitized and I guess still searchable thanks to the internet.

Oh well? Glad to have had you all along for the ride. Let’s see how much longer this nonsense goes on for, shall we?

Seeya next time!

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

Well, we’ve made it to December, and somehow also simultaneously made it to the end of year 9 of RFYL. How is this even possible? I’d launch into an origin story that nobody would care about but honestly, you’re better off watching a music loosely based on reality like Scott Pilgrim vs The World instead. It’s more or less what had me start doing this in the first place.

No,  that wasn’t supposed to make sense.

Anyway, I desperately need to go lay down because I am a hot mess and not in the fun way, so here’s the playlist, and hopefully see you next week!

Playlist:
Feelin’ Better – Cory Hotline

The Lunchbox Interview: Matt Carter (TNB’s It’s A Wonderful Life)

Posted on 2019-12-04 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Sometimes, a nostalgic look at the past reminds you of the bounties of the present, and that just because it’s old, it’s still relevant.

My guest today is Matt Carter, one of this city’s hard-working cheerleaders. Along with continuing to post interviews and reviews of cultural events on GridCity Magazine, he works as the Director of Development and Communications with TNB. He also partnered up with Eric Hill (local musician, and of Backstreet Records) to propose an art project about seeing the overlooked elements of Fredericton. He joins me to talk about all of this, and TNB’s upcoming live-on-stage version of the radio play of the classic Christmas movie, “It’s A Wonderful Life”.

TNB will be staging “It’s A Wonderful Life” at the Playhouse in Fredericton from December 12 – 14, before hitting the road to several communities in New Brunswick.

The Lunchbox/Real Life Survivor: Lisa Richard (November 2019)

Posted on 2019-12-02 by encaf1 Posted in Real Life Survivor, The Lunchbox

Each month, RealLifeSurvivor profiles a person who has gone through trauma and difficulty and emerged on the other side stronger and with a fuller appreciation of life.

For November, Julie Comeau spoke to Lisa Richard, a Canadian sing-songwriter. A weekend trip home changed Lisa’s life forever when the danger all-to-familiar to New Brunswickers appeared: a moose. The immediate care she received from a stranger changed both of their lives, and inspired them both to find ways to help others.

Lisa Richard has released the song Uniforms as part of her mission to thank the people who helped her and many others along the way. She will be in Fredericton for the upcoming New Brunswick Country Showcase on December 7.

Each month, RealLifeSurvivor profiles a person who has gone through trauma and difficulty and emerged on the other side stronger and with a fuller appreciation of life.

For October, Julie Comeau spoke to Louie Stravato. Louis is known for being on the TV show Survivor today, but when he was younger he was an off-duty police officer who found himself in the path of a speeding car. He speaks about fighting to make a quick recovery, and how it has inspired him and others to this day.

You’re aware of Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, but the latest trend is GivingTuesday, an international day of charitable giving following the two days that are good for the economy. Now there’s a day that’s good for the community!
Held the first Tuesday after the American Thanksgiving, on December 3, 2019 CHSR is holding a 5×5 fundraising campaign where we’re asking for a modest donation of $5.00, then encourage you to tag/tell 5 friends to do the same. The hope is that this will become a snowball effect that the Fredericton community can get behind!
You can give online through PayPal or e-transfer, and all ways to donate can he found here. Not able to donate this year? We understand! By sharing our 5×5 fundraising campaign online you are also contributing to CHSR, and for that we thank you.

Overtime – November 29th, 2019 – Hockey Is For Everyone?

Posted on 2019-11-30 by Johnny James Posted in General, Overtime

Warning: There is a heavy amount of content discussed in this episode that deals with acts of racism, physical and psychological abuse, and the trauma caused by it. Please proceed with caution while listening to this episode if subjects of this nature are triggering to you in any way.

Disclaimer: The resignation of Bill Peters as head coach of the Calgary Flames occurred after the recording of this episode. It will be a topic we will include in our next episode on Dec. 2.

On this episode we take our full one-hour time slot to unpackage the stories of racism, physical and psychological abuse recently made public by hockey players who played under coaches Bill Peters, Mike Babcock and others.

Hosting a radio talk show means discussing the good as much as the bad; this episode is the latter.

This show is heavy and the topic was the last thing any of us wanted to discuss and we struggled to dissect it in just 60 minutes.

We hope it’s a worthwhile contribution to a much needed conversation and that it amplified the voices of those affected. We believe that this was the best use of our privileged airtime.

We hope it educates you and that it is part of a more positive future for hockey.

Thank you for listening, we will (hopefully) have a more upbeat episode to share with you on Monday.

– Johnny, Kaley and Sean

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

On this week’s episode of RFYL, we realize the deepest goals of the show by speaking in code to the point that if you take every second word I say in each talking segment of this week’s message, you will get a wonderful recipe for tomato soup.

Also, I found yet another album that I happened to miss last month, so I’m going to spin the hell out of that. We revisit a lot of my favourites for this year on this episode and I am starting to realize that I should’ve probably started an End Of Year review like I do every week. But I haven’t done that yet.. I’ll do it later.

Fredericton locals, go out to a show tomorrow night! Link below!

Interview // Bondo chats with Adam Sturgeon of Whoop-Szo

Posted on 2019-11-29 by Bondo Posted in Homemade Jams

November 27, 2019 – Not too many artists know what it’s like to be one of the most talked about bands in the country. But after releasing Warrior Down November 1, 2019 via You’ve Changed Records, Guelph/London based quintet WHOOP-Szo are being praised by writers, industry folk, and the word Polaris has been floating around my Twitter feed for weeks. Exclaim Magazine even quoted “WHOOP-Szo are deeply deserving of national and international attention for their expert live show and unique brand of heavy music.” about the band. So why is there so much chatter about WHOOP-Szo?

Warrior Down is a record illustrating issues surrounding social injustice, but also offers both healing and hope. With songs lyrically focusing on the tragic realities of the mistreatment in residential schools and having culture assigned to you, Bondo asks frontperson Adam Sturgeon why 2019 is the perfect time for this record. They also talk about the London music scene, why WHOOP-Szo’s sound is so eclectic, the role smaller “indie” labels still play, the importance of touring smaller communities while being leaders in the music community.

Warrior Down is available now.

The Lunchbox Interview: Mike Bravener (Songs of New Brunswick)

Posted on 2019-11-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Some think that heritage is contained in statues and buildings; others know that they can also find it in songs and stories, which need as much care to preserve as any stone.

My guest today is Mike Bravener, a local troubadour who has turned an opportunity to portray a historical character at King’s Landing as the inspiration to record an album of New Brunswick folk songs. He joins me in studio to talk about his discovery of these songs and his decision to bring them to life once again. He performs a segment of Peter Emberley, the song which spurred much of the album.

You can contribute to the support of this album by seeing Mike at upcoming shows, or contributing to the Indigogo campaign.

The Lunchbox Interview: Theatre UNB’s Moments In Time

Posted on 2019-11-25 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Look at the stage, see the world that isn’t there, hold it in your mind, listen to the words the actors give you, draw your own scenes.

My guests today are John Ball (instructor, director), Danika Bridgeman (actor, costuming) and Patrick Heffernan (actor), all from Theatre UNB’s upcoming production, Moments In Time. They join me to talk about the three, one-act plays falling under this show’s banner: The Long Christmas Dinner and The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden by Thornton Wilder, and The Green Hill by David Ives. They also share a scene from The Green Hill, and tell me about the Death Portal and the Birth Portal.

In addition to the Grey Cup and the futures of the various playoff teams we also take some time to discuss the Atlantic Schooners stadium deal and whether or not we believe it will be approved in December.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

On this week’s episode, we make our declarations, no, our INTENTIONS clear in this, the beginning of the end times that make the holiday season. Yes, those neighbours of yours who leave their lights up year round can now be smug. Yes, that giant inflatable Santa is absolutely necessary to block the sidewalk, and YES, I am never talking about any of this again.

So enjoy some new tunes or whatever, do it, you won’t.

Also if you want to make requests on a show that absolutely will not play any Christmas music to provide one hour of solitude for those who have suffered retail enough to absolutely hate it, you have found the right place. I MIGHT even play those requests.

Maybe.

The Lunchbox on History: Leah Grandy (Uncovering Loyalist Stories)

Posted on 2019-11-22 by encaf1 Posted in NB History, The Lunchbox

New Brunswick has long been a place of refuge, where people have come to find a new way forward.

My guest today is Leah Grandy, a Library Assistant in the Harriet Irving Library at UNB, where she works specifically with the Microforms library. She joins me to share the ongoing work she and her colleagues are doing to uncover the stories of the lives of Loyalist settlers in New Brunswick, particularly seeking out the lesser-known stories of the average people. You can see the Loyalist collection, including the Story Maps, at the library’s web site.

How much do you think you know about New Brunswick history? Personally, I think we do a pretty bad job of teaching it, and most people don’t embrace it. I’m on a mission to learn more, so I’ve invited a collection of historians to help me learn more about the legacies, the achievements, the battles, the inventions, the troublesome eras and the long past of one of Canada’s oldest regions.
