The Lunchbox/Real Life Survivor: Jennifer Mendez (February 2020)

Posted on 2020-02-26 by encaf1 Posted in Real Life Survivor, The Lunchbox

For February, Julie Comeau and Mark spoke to Jennifer Mendez, who has lived with fibromyalgia for over two-and-a-half decades.

Jennifer has overcome numerous related complications, and continues to survive symptoms such as severe pain, headaches, tremors, nausea and extreme fatigue. Her strength and motivation to support many non-profit organizations comes from the famous quote by John Holmes: “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.

Each month, RealLifeSurvivor profiles a person who has gone through trauma and difficulty and emerged on the other side stronger and with a fuller appreciation of life.

Remember a few years ago when I said I’d update the artwork, revamp a few things about the show and otherwise get some great quality of life improvements?

This episode continues to have NONE OF THOSE THINGS! So enjoy the music because nothing else has changed and it won’t change so there.

Now, if you don’t mind, I need to go eat.

The Lunchbox Interview: Michelle Raine (Authentic Theatre Creation workshops)

Posted on 2020-02-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The virtues of finding media which reflects and represents your own personal experience are often mentioned — but imagine the power of creating that media itself.

My guest today is Michelle Raine, an artist and gender consultant and self-described “creative junkie”. Michelle is hosting a series of workshops over the March break entitled “Authentic Theatre Creation for Queer Youth and Allies”. We talk about the power of theatre and art for self-expression and self-discovery, and the space that they create to make possibilities.

The workshops cover multiple sessions aimed at youth and adults over the March Break. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up sooner rather than later.

The Lunchbox Interview: Cat Leblanc w/ Colin Fowlie (Blue To Blue)

Posted on 2020-02-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Artists are rarely solitary; rather, a community around them can help them truly stand out.

My guests today are Cat Leblanc and Colin Fowlie, on the occasion of Cat’s new album, Blue To Blue. Colin, along with a number of other musicians and performers, helped Cat through the sometimes complicated and detailed process of putting out her first record. Cat’s voice floats over this recording, both in terms of the vocal performance and the lyrical stories she generates. She joins me to talk about her history with music, and how finding this community reinvigorated her confidence in finding her own way.

A release party for Cat’s album will be on February 23 at Grimross Brewing company at 2pm. The album is out now in general release, and the single Music Man is available on Bandcamp.

The Lunchbox Interview: TUNB’s “Some Girl(s)” (Travis, Kayla, Brennan)

Posted on 2020-02-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

How often do you reflect on how you’ve acted around people? How often have you realized you might just be “that guy” to “some girls”?

My guests today are Travis Flynn, Kayla-Renee Ossachuk and Brennan Garnett, three members of the cast and crew of the upcoming Theatre UNB production of Neil LaBute’s play, Some Girl(s). Travis plays the lead “Guy”, Kayla portrays one of the girls from that guy’s past whom he confronts (and is confronted by), and Brennan is co-directing the play. They join me to share how this play challenged them, from latent but all-too-common shallow attitudes, interrupting or drifting dialogue, and how we treat each other thoughtlessly.

Some Girl(s) opens Thursday, February 20 at 7:30pm at Memorial Hall at UNB, and runs nightly through Saturday.

The Lunchbox Interview: Emma Allen, Sula Levesque (UNB Black History Month Poster Project)

Posted on 2020-02-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The more know about history, the more we can put our current world in the context needed to understand it, and to move forward together.

Under a plan devised by Sula and the UNB Equity team to uncover and celebrate black history in New Brunswick, Emma has engaged heavily in the research, collation, design and writing for a series of posters promoting several members of the historical and present New Brunswick black community. They join me to talk about the development of this historical exploration of an underrepresented element of local history.

There is an opening of an ongoing exhibition of the posters on February 21 at 5pm at Memorial Hall, UNB Fredericton campus. The opening will also feature poetry and other talks about the exhibit. For a full description of the event, view the UNB event page. The exhibit will be on display until March 27.
