Once On Much – Ep09 Ryan Dahle
Once On Much – Ep09 Ryan Dahle
There are certain voices that are stitched into the fabric of Canadian alternative rock. Spend five minutes talking to Ryan Dahle and you realize he’s never really thought of himself as part of a “scene” — even though he helped define one.
In our latest episode of Once On Much, I chat with Ryan Dahle — best known for his work with Age of Electric, Limblifter, and Mounties — for a wide-ranging conversation that somehow felt both nostalgic and completely present-tense.
When I asked what he remembers about the so-called golden era of ’90s Canadian alt-rock — the era of Sloan, Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party, Moist, and I Mother Earth — his answer wasn’t about a scene. It was about survival. Rehearsal spaces in Vancouver. Long drives. Inside jokes. Being locked in with your bandmates and figuring it out as you went. They didn’t see themselves as part of a Canadian movement; they were just chasing what excited them, shaped as much by Seattle’s explosion as anything happening at home. The bands that embraced them — like The Odds and The Northern Pikes — were peers, not templates.
If there was a common thread, it was MuchMusic. For a generation, it was a tastemaker and lifeline, with shows like The Wedge and Power Hour shaping identities in real time. In a move that feels almost impossible now, he cold-called the station to pitch a 16mm video. It got played. Momentum followed — relentless touring, endless phone calls, pure hustle. When “Remote Control” landed on Big Shiny Tunes 2, it cemented something bigger than airplay: a million-plus CDs spinning their name into collective memory. From Limblifter’s rule-bending songwriting experiments to Mounties’ lightning-in-a-bottle collaboration with Hawksley Workman and Steve Bays, the throughline isn’t nostalgia — it’s curiosity.

The Truth to Power Hour S01.E02
Well, here’s our second episode, it was originally supposed to be on Fascism, the rise of right wing extremism, illiberalism, democratic backsliding, I wound up having so much more to say by the time this episode was done.
I essentially got through talking about the MAGA movement as a fascist revolution, and ran out of time. So, I’m already planning for the next bi-weekly episode, for March 1st, which will continue out discussing on fascism, the rise of the right, and hopefully be able to focus on the creation of the economic pressures that enable fascism, whilst still allowing the neo-capitalist class to profit.
So, turn on! Tune in! And hang out, let’s talk about these important issues, what’s happening, and speak truth to power.
My name is Joel Green, I’m the old man on campus, let’s talk about this stuff.
and this week’s playlist is:
1. “B for Bourgeoisie” by King Lobster Krew
2. “Northern Star“ by Danny Michel
3. “Born on the Bayou” by Creedence Clearwater Revival (live at Woodstock)
4. “The Magnificent Seven” by Kokolo (a Clash song)
Now, I think I’m going to put a post on out facebook page “The Truth to Power Hour”, with a poll, since I bragged so much about Oscar Peterson’s live performance of Hymn to Freedom, and Also CCR’s performance at Woodstock, what if I allowed one song during the hour be dedicated to a live performance that’s better, or maybe just has a different energy than the recorded version.
Maybe I’ll try that out.
But in the meantime, here’s our episode on Fascism. We’ll be continuing this conversation in two weeks. Because there is so much more to be said.
Stay tuned Canada.

Truth to Power Hour S01.E01
So, this is our first episode, our introduction to the world. I decided to do a show on privilege, because if I’m going to do a show on all these sociological, political and cultural issues, I think it’s important to do an episode acknowledging my privilege, and setting the stage for all our following episodes.
I apologize for sounding nervous on this one, but it’s my first show, so please cut me some slack, I’ve already completed the second episode, and I hear that I sound much more comfortable. So, with that said…
Welcome to the Truth to Power Hour. We’re going to talk about real issues in an honest way. My name it Joel Green, I’m an old man, new on Campus, learning awesome things, and am looking to share it with you.
We’re going to talk about issues of today, and play music that relates… somehow.
So, on this episode, I’m acknowledging my privilege. So that from this point on, when we’re talking about issues that include the patriarchy, racism, homophobia, whatever, we can acknowledge that anything I say is from the perspective of a Gen X, Straight, White Man.
I’m about to turn 50, just left the military after 20 years, and am back in school, and now I have this radio show.
Let’s learn together. It’ll be awesome.
This episode has the following music.
1. Funky President – James Brown
2. Southern Man – Sylvester and the Hot Band
3. Hymn to Freedom – Oscar Peterson
4. We the People who are Darker than Blue – Curtis Mayfield
5. They Say I’m Different- Bettie Davis
I Hope you enjoy, if you have any critiques, please let me know, and maybe we can address it.
Just remember this, if you get anything out of this episode, it’s the value of empathy and humility.
enjoy,
Joel

Grey Temples 44 – A leather jacket filled with Werther’s Originals
Studies have shown that metalheads tend to be happier, calmer, and more intelligent than the average person. So, you’re welcome in advance.
This episode has more riffs than you can pack in your knapsack, and that’s a fact, Jack!
We start out as deep as you can get into Big Shiny Tunes territory as you can get, without actually being on Big Shiny Tunes. Salmonblaster bringing us a beloved tune with the most mid-90’s half speed breakdown you can get. If you were in a band in the 90s, you had a part in one of your songs just like this. Probably 3 or 4!
And we’re just getting started!
From there, we keep on turning up the rock until the rock-o-meter burns out. It’s kind of like this one time my speedometer in my old car stopped working and topped out at 70 km/h no matter how fast I went, and I couldn’t figure out why I was so scared going around every corner when I was still 10 under the speed limit.
And then we start the metal portion of the show.
We’ve got d-beat, we’ve got technical death metal, we’ve got grindcore (bolded for emphasis), we’ve got metallic hardcore, we’ve got metalcore, a touch of deathcore, we’ve got hardic metaldeath, we’ve got deathard quorum, et cetera, et cetera. The moral of the story is that it all sound essentially the same to 90% of people. Not me though! And hopefully not you.
Peace and love, peace and love,
Jon

Oh brother, here we go again…. in a good way!
Shawn drops by the show and we hang out in a way that only dudes like us can, with at least one of us in a baseball cap. Which one? Listen to find out!
Nah, I kid, this one is a blast. Shawn and I get all excited and nerd out about all kinds of music, tell weird anecdotes, and have a general laff. Shawn is much better about getting out and about to shows than I am, so I’ve got some learnin’ to do!
Enjoy,
