Motorists asked to be patient during bridge closure
Motorists are being asked to continue with their co-operation amidst the closure of the Princess Margaret Bridge. That message from Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams as he toured the bridge yesterday (Wednesday). Due to wet weather over the summer, the bridge opening has been delayed until mid-October. The remainder of work on the bridge, including the pouring of concrete barrier walls and painting, requires a stretch of dry weather, something hard to come by this summer. The city hopes that with the completion of repairs on MacLaren Avenue and Forest Hill Road, traffic flows will improve.
Fatal accident downtown Wednesday
Fredericton Police are investigating a fatal accident in the downtown. Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Brunswick and York Streets at around 3:15 yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. The accident involved a vehicle and a pedestrian. One person was taken to the Chalmers Hospital with what appeared to be serious injuries. The 52-year-old man died later in the evening. Motorists were told to stay away from the area until early evening. The investigation is ongoing.
Gas prices climb at the pumps this week
No break at the pumps this week as gas prices rise. When prices were reset last (Wednesday) night at midnight, regular unleaded was up by 1.3 cents to a maximum of 131.2 cents per litre. Most stations are selling for a couple of cents less. Meanwhile, diesel is up by 1.6 cents to 133.2 cents per litre. Furnace oil is also up by nine-tenths of a cent to 114.6 cents per litre. Propane is up by 0.6 cents to 114.4 cents per litre. Prices are normally reset every Wednesday night.
Sentencing for Minto man postponed until Oct.
Sentencing has been postponed for a Minto man who earlier pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing bodily harm. The judge postponed sentencing for Justin Kenneth Foulkes because the Crown prosecutor was not available yesterday (Wednesday). In an earlier appearance, the court hears that RCMP were called to the scene of a single-vehicle accident at 4 a.m. on September 25 of last year on Route 10 in Hardwood Ridge. After their arrival, they found a car with three people in the ditch. Foulkes co-operated with police during the investigation that night. A male friend who was in the backseat had fractured his back and needed to wear a brace for three months. Foulkes will now be sentenced October 14.
