The Lunchbox Interview: Matt Watkins (Plein-Air Painter)

Posted on 2019-07-10 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Nature is dynamic and ever-changing, at each moment displaying a portrait of a landscape.

During the summer, the city of Fredericton is hosting numerous artists and crafters each week at the Odell Park Lodge, to practice their art for all to see. These artists come from a wide variety of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to basket-weaving and writing. From time to time, we’ll check in with these artistson the Lunchbox to find out what makes their art move them.

My guest today is Matt Watkins, a plein-air painter taking in the beauty of Odell Park during his residency. He joins me to talk about his approach to capturing nature by making smaller paintings with a small palette, and finding spots which he can look in any direction and find inspiration.

New limited series: REVISITATION & For The Birds

Posted on 2019-07-10 by encaf1 Posted in Announcements, Schedule Updates

Starting Friday, July 12, two limited series will join the lineup:

  • REVISITATION (Fridays, 2pm-2:30pm): a four episode creative nonfiction series. The four episodes are an audio collage encompassing journal entries from November 2016 through November 2017, music in heavy rotation during that time, and songs created specifically for this show by Brookside Mall and Cedric Noel.
  • For The Birds (Fridays, 2:30pm-3pm): a new series which showcases our feathered friends (or foes). Topics of this show include: ecology, groups and species of interest (species at risk, threatened or endangered species), avian conservation, and responses to global climate change. This show is focused mainly on Canadian species, but there will be times where we will discuss birds from other countries and continents.

The Lunchbox Interview: Lois McDonald-Layden (Felt Artist)

Posted on 2019-07-08 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

There are ancient techniques for creating art, many of which would benefit from a few modern tools to revitalize them again.

My guest today is Lois Mcdonald-Layden, a felt artist whose remarkable creation include birds, landscapes and even felt geodes. She joined me to talk about how felting works, her process for getting details into unruly material, and the meditative craft of felting.

The Lunchbox Interview: Sarah Petite (Encaustic Painter)

Posted on 2019-07-08 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Right now, it often feels like everything is melting, but some people prefer melting for their art.

During the summer, the Fredericton Arts Alliance brings a pair of artists together in the Barracks to practice their art for all to see. These artists come from a wide variety of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to basket-weaving and writing. As each pair of artists comes in, we’ll be talking to them on the Lunchbox.

My guest today is Sarah Petite, who practices encaustic painting, where beeswax is mixed with pigments and used as a combination of paint and sculpture. She tells me how encaustic painting works, how her practice has changed over the years, and the work that she’s challenging herself with this week.

The Lunchbox Interview: Laura-Beth Bird // Dustin Forbes (Shadow Puppet Theatre)

Posted on 2019-07-08 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

In a world of incredibly detailed computer-generated realism, sometimes it’s good to remember that the imagination goes farther than realism could ever, and provides more meaning.

My guests today are Laura-Beth Bird and Dustin Forbes, a puppeteer and a dancer working to create shadow puppet theatre around the combination of children’s poems and the theme of trees. We talked about the kinds of puppetry that exist, the choice to do shadow puppetry, and the unique challenges and opportunities the medium offers.

Donate your used books to CHSR!

Posted on 2019-07-01 by Bondo Posted in Announcements, chsr, Events, Featured, Special Events

There’s a certain magic involved when getting lost in a good book. They can take you to a new world and introduce you to new friends, some of whom you’ll keep with you for the rest of your life.

CHSR is putting a twist on borrowing books from your friends by hosting a Blind Date With A Book event late this summer. We’ll be bringing books wrapped in paper with descriptive keywords, or a couple sentences stating why the previous owner loved the story. Then you’ll get to comb through the collection to hopefully pair yourself with a new adventure!

But first, we need your gently used books!
Over the next few weeks you can drop your book donations off to CHSR and we’ll prepare them for the event! Event details are coming, but don’t worry, we’re pairing it with great coffee downtown.

And if you’re an enthusiastic book reader perhaps consider joining CHSR’s book club, Readful Things, which is resurrecting this fall.

HitG 019: Player Responsibilities

Posted on 2019-06-29 by encaf1 Posted in Head In The Game

A roleplaying game is a collective experience. That doesn’t just mean that everyone benefits, but also that everyone contributes.

But what do players bring to the table besides playing their characters? We dig in to that, to give an idea of the mental as well as physical things someone needs to bring in order to help the entire game go better.

RFYL Episode – PassionEP075

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

I decided to go backwards this time and spin all the genres I normally play in circles. So, we start with some dance / disco and spin towards the low and lazy summer music before picking up again into the heavier side of things.

I even got a bonus track in this week! Though the playlist likely got a little cut off on the hour – this episode will be in full if you download it here! Gotta like that! (There’s no hidden messages at the end and this is not a jebait)

Playlist:
Take Care Of U (feat: Lydia Persaud Music) – TWRP
Badass Girlz – ProleteR
Philadelphia – Dorothy
Waiting For Something – Diemonds
Keeper – Reignwolf
The Wire – Kilmore
The City – Arcane Saints
Cold Blooded Killer – The Standstills
Storm Song – Public Animal
High Fantasy / Something So Familiar – Gygax
