The Lunchbox Interview: Tania Breen (TNB Theatre School Summer Programs)

Posted on 2015-06-18 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-TNBSummerDramaSchoolIt’s a bit like make believe — for school!

The opportunity for kids to go to drama camp is tremendous. For them to have the possibility to go every summer from little kid to teen is incredible. Tania Breen, Director of the TNB Theatre School, joined me on the Lunchbox to talk about the great series of summer camp programs they are offering for kids this year. The program is now celebrating it’s 10th year, and folks who were kids when they went through it are now old enough to help teach the current kids in the program.

Spots are filling up quickly for the programs, and they get started soon. Be sure to register ASAP!

Music today:

  • Like A Motorcycle tells us the tale of a person, not a state, with Georgia, off their Stay Single album.
  • Music is often best played REALLY LOUD, so we follow Napalmpom‘s advice and are Guided By Volume, taken from The Unconditional Love Of Napalmpom.
  • And a reminder of the city all around us, we celebrate with the title track from Cory Paul Hill‘s album Where We Love.

Posted on 2015-06-17 by AgainstTheMat Posted in Against The Mat!

This show is full of interviews and topics not usually covered.

We were joined in studio by Rugged Rick Owens, to promote the Vision Pro Wrestling event being held in Fredericton this Saturday night and his harrowing travels back from out West.

We then took a break to talk about Global Force Wrestling.

In the second hour, we spoke with Michael Elgin, former (and possible future?) ROH World Champion, to talk about his career in the business and to promote ROH’s Best In The World PPV this Friday night.

The Lunchbox Interview: Len Falkenstein, Jake Martin, Sharisse LeBrun (Bard In The Barracks)

Posted on 2015-06-17 by encaf1 Posted in General, The Lunchbox

LunchBox-BardInTheBarracks-2015I love a good theatre performance.

It’s not the same as a book, an audio drama, a movie, a game. It’s a unique medium, and it delivers something in a way that no other medium captures. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but it has to do with the magic of actors and the words of the playwright transforming things in a real way without the separation of a screen or page.

And the way that Bard In The Barracks do it every year — for 10 years in a row, now! — is also an incredibly immersive experience.

My guests today are Len Falkenstein, Jake Martin and Sharisse LeBrun. Len Falkenstein is one of the powerhouse forces behind a lot of theatre in this city, being a founder, Artistic Director and on of the primary directors of Bard In The Barracks, as well as Artistic Director of Notable Acts and the director of the Drama program at UNB. Jake Martin is acting as the titular character in Hamlet, a reprise of his role from last year’s rained out show. Jake is also no stranger to theatre, having written, acted and directed numerous productions around town, include The Next Folding Theatre Company. And Sharisse LeBrun is playing in key roles in both productions this summer, taking on Ophelia in Hamlet and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. Sharisse is studying drama at St Thomas, and is returning to Bard In The Barracks for the third year.

We spoke about the exciting changes introduced into these plays-on-location, the emotional challenge of these roles, and the two actors play out a very well known scene from Hamlet.

Bard In The Barracks starts this Friday, June 19. This year’s run features another week of performances, and has two Shakespeare plays in two locations: Hamlet is being staged in Odell Park, and Romeo and Juliet is being performed in Barracks Square downtown.

Music today:

  • Inspired by the weather and their recent Polaris-prize long-list entry, Bondo played Warmlike Summer from Braids‘ recent album, Deep In The Iris.
  • And perhaps feeling the difficulty of filling in for a few minutes for me, Bondo put on Pressure by Milk + Bone from their album, Little Mourning.
  • To also celebrate the feeling of theatre in the summer, I added Summer Eyes by Midday Swim (from their self-titled) album to the show.

The Lunchbox Interview: Drew Budovich (2nd Open Arts Gathering)

Posted on 2015-06-16 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-2ndOpenArtsGatheringWhat does the arts community mean to you?

You might be a visual artist, looking for ways to connect to your community.

You might be a musician looking for ways to reach out and learn from those more established than yourself.

You might be a veteran performer, looking to mentor others.

You might be a fan, wanted to make this vibrant community even better.

No matter what your take is on it, one of the great signs of an active community is the gathering together of people and ideas in a communication space. Earlier this year, one of these events occurred, called the Open Arts Gathering. Tonight, the second one is underway as I type.

Today on the Lunchbox I spoke with Drew “Dee” Budovich, a member of the Shifty Bits Cult, a Fredericton-based arts collective that is partnering with Connection ARC and others to stimulate arts-based community conversations at the second Open Arts Gathering. We talked about the success of the first Gathering earlier this year, and some of Dee’s hopes for tonight’s installment.

Music today:

  • Celebrating the warmer weather come, I played a song by Heat called susifine, from Rooms album.
  • Post-interview, the message was clear: there’s a lot to love about this city, and that drives art. We heard Rich Aucoin‘s take on the City I Love, from his Ephemeral album.
  • And at the end we heard just a snippet from Elephant Skeletons‘ wonderful Vol III called Handlines.

The Lunchbox: #MyDefinition 2015 Kickoff

Posted on 2015-06-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-MyDefinitionMost of us struggle from time to time. Many of us struggle a lot of the time, but it can feel like we are alone, like we are the only ones with issues.

That’s not true: you are not alone.

Three years ago, students at UNB organized a campaign called #MyDefinition. It sought to de-stigmatize talking about mental health issues by showing their fellow students that their peers also faced mental health issues — but they didn’t let it define them.

This past weekend, the third #MyDefinition was kicked off by a celebration and heartfelt speeches. I captured those and present them today as part of the show.

Music today:

  • We look up music at The Reference Desk and are guided to the energetic SPR, from the album My Cold Home.
  • And answering the question that we weren’t sure we asked, it’s Yes We Mystic from the Vestige album, with the song wood.

The Lunchbox Interview: Imelda Perley on Honouring Residential School Survivors

Posted on 2015-06-11 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-UNBMWCThose who don’t respect history are doomed to repeat it.

There was a very disturbing part of the history of the Maritimes (and all of Canada) that is only really coming to widespread awareness now. The Residential School system treated Native children in atrocious ways, intentionally seeking to destroy their connection to their heritage in horrible, dehumanizing ways.

Those who went through that “school” system aren’t graduates, they are being properly recognized at survivors.

Today, the UNB’s Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre hosted a Circle of Understanding called “Honouring Residential School Survivors”. This was an opportunity to recognize the difficulties endured by the young children sent through the Residential School system, the lingering damage that their experiences caused to the students and their families and descendents, and the strength, resilience, determination and progress toward healing and growing from that terrible time.

My guest today is Imelda Perley, the UNB Elder-in-Residence. We talked about Circle and its importance, as well as provide some summary of the event.

I was fortunate to attend most of the Circle of Understanding, and I gathered some audio from the event that I hope to compose into something I can share. It was a moving event, but ultimately filled with the determination to make things better for future generations.

Music today:

  • Hopefully, the ultimate goal of meeting people is to understand them. We heard Jessica Rhaye sing about that in You Know Me Better, from her Far Gone Lullabies album.
  • And to give both you and I some time to reflect and build determining energy after the interview, I played Groundwork by Kuato, from The Great Upheaval.

The Lunchbox Interview: Tina Sipp, African Children’s Choir

Posted on 2015-06-11 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-AfricanChildrensChoirWe live in an age of incredible access to information, where people from all around the world are getting a chance to learn about others everywhere else. (The access isn’t universal yet, but we are moving in that direction.)

But there is still nothing quite like getting a chance to see it for yourself, to get the opportunity to meet another culture and interact with it. That’s the chance offered to young students from all over Africa presented through the African Children’s Choir. Matt Baxter (who has been filling in for me while I was away on conference) spoke with Tina Sipp, one of the event coordinators for the African Children’s Choir. They talked about the history and incredible story of how it began, the tours that they go on, and the opportunity that this gives the children to travel.

The Choir is coming to the Fredericton area on June 28. They’ll be performing at the Grace Memorial Baptist Church at 536 Northumberland St in Fredericton at 10:30am, and later in the evening at 6:30pm in Minto. The performances offer entrance by donation, which helps them continue their work.

Music today:

  • Patrick Watson tells us the future! From his album Love Songs For Robots, we heard Good Morning, Mr Wolf.
  • And to give you a taste of what to expect, I played Lord I Life Your Name On High, as performed by the African Children’s Choir.
