The Lunchbox Interview: Chris Waddell of The Wasteland Zombies

Posted on 2014-11-28 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-WastelandZombiesHave you every had to stop doing something you love, because life circumstances change?

I think a lot of people go through this, especially when they are in their twenties. But, if we’re lucky, we’ll get a chance to get back to it.

All it takes is heart.

Chris Waddell joins me on the show today. He’s currently the Music Director of CHSR-FM, but he joined me for a much different reason: he’s got the band together! Chris is the lead singer of The Wasteland Zombies (Facebook), a band which was put on a 20-year hiatus and now has come back. We talk about how the band came to be in the first place, how it come to return, and what it’s like to be the singer of a metal band.

The Wasteland Zombies (Reverb Nation) are having their first reunion show on Friday, November 28 at The Oromocto Legion, 284 Restigouche Rd. They’ll be joined by Fallen Pawns & Moment of Inertia. Show starts at 9pm.

Today’s Music:

  • Push Ahead by Bill Wood & The Woodies from the album Oh Look.
  • The Wasteland Zombies with Spread Your Wings from their tape, The Town Fair.

The Lunchbox 2014-11-27

Posted on 2014-11-27 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-DAY-4-THURSDAYI’m another victim of the latest storm: my power was flickering for about two hours before it finally went out around midnight.

So, a sleepy Thursday, but for some it’s the day to remember Pins and Needles. It sounds like what happens when you fall asleep on your arm and it wakes up, but it’s actually about a Pro-Labour theatrical production on Broadway. Who knew?

Another recap of events on the show, plus music:

  • The Heavy Blinkers with I Should Be Sleeping from the album Health;
  • Garbage Man by The Stogies from their recent album, Hoot;
  • and from his album The Hardest Part Is You May Never Know, we heard Paul Cargnello‘s song, Boots Stomping.

The Lunchbox 2014-11-26: Cake Day!

Posted on 2014-11-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-DAY-3-WEDNESDAYHappy Wednesday!

It happens to be Cake Day today, and that raises an interesting conundrum: if you serve cake for special days, do you serve cake on Cake’s special day? Cuz cake IS cake, and would it be special for cake to get cake?

Alright, maybe that’s a bit too philosophical for a day about cake, but these are the things that cross my mind..

Lots of events today, many turning to a Christmas theme! And music:

  • Buck 65 (featuring Tiger Rosa) with Only War from the album, Neverlove,
  • The Dead Projectionists with Just After The Flood Comes from the album Detractor.

The Lunchbox 2014-11-25

Posted on 2014-11-25 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-DAY-2-TUESDAYIt may feel just like every other Tuesday, but it’s an important day to remember, to decide to act and improve. In particular, it’s the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. We need to work together, and keep ever vigilant, and provide support to those victims and the supporters of victims.

On a less serious note, it’s also apparently Christmas Shopping Day (only a month left!) and Parfait Day (have a treat, or treat someone who needs it!).

Music today:

  • Chin Injeti with Wherever We Go Tonight from The Reverb
  • Kuato with Black Horizon from The Great Upheaval

The Lunchbox 2014-11-24

Posted on 2014-11-24 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-DAY-1-MONDAYThis is the first of a new experiment: podcasting the Lunchbox every day!

We cover a lot of events and play some great music on The Lunchbox, but I know that not everyone can experience it live each day.

To fix that, I’m going to start podcasting the show every day for a while. Let me know if this is appreciated, or if you want me to go back to the previous policy of podcasting interviews only.

Music today:

  • Earth Bound Trio with Straight Ahead from Lettuce Turnip the Beet

The Crazy Train Episode #XIX

Posted on 2014-11-23 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

CTlogoA1

Fantastic show! We had on our good friend Tyson Davidson former growler for Fredericton’s ‘Anesthesia’. Tyson brought in some of his favorite indie Metal acts from Canada to play.

In the second hour we had a few requests, some new Slipknot, Smashing Pumpkins, Arch Enemy, Slayer and much more!

Thanx again to Tyson for coming in and making it a great show! Expect lots more from local guests to sit in on the show. I’ll have them bring in some of their favorite up and coming Canadian Indie Metal acts!

I’ll try to get the ‘Play List’ up ASAP!

Peace, until next week! Keep it Metal – Oh and because I can 🙂 Don’t forget to come out THIS Friday to the Oromocto Legion on Restigouche rd to catch the VERY first Wasteland Zombies show in 20 years!! They’ll be joined by Fredericton powerhouse ‘Moment of Inertia’ and Oromocto destroyer’s ‘Fallen Pawns’! Show starts at 10PM and admission is only $5.! It’s a way out of town, but it’ll be worth it, I promise!

The Lunchbox Interview: Ian Goff & Dylan Sealy of Next Folding Theatre Company for “10, 9, 8, etc., etc”

Posted on 2014-11-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-NFTC1098etcetcTraditional theatre follows a process (I imagine) something like this:

  • Playwright writes a play.
  • Director gets play, casts play.
  • Actors perform play.

But what if you took that process and compressed it to:

  • People get together, write the script, act in the script and direct each other.

That the process behind the Creative Collaboration series from The Next Folding Theatre Company. They take a group of people, throw them together, and tell them to create.

And they do!

The latest work is called “10, 9, 8, etc, etc”. I was joined by two of the writer/actor/directors of the six-person team, Ian Goff (who calls himself mostly an actor) and Dylan Sealy (who calls himself more of a prose writer). We talked about the process of exploration and creation that made this show as well as a bit about the general idea of the show (it’s hard to describe).

“10, 9, 8, etc., etc.” runs from November 22nd through 24th at The Wilser’s Room in the Capital Complex in Fredericton. The show starts at 7pm, and you are encouraged to support the show additionally by supporting their sponsor, Picaroons.

Brother Octopus return with Sea Of Champions

Posted on 2014-11-21 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Music Reviews
Brother Octopus "Sea Of Champions"

Brother Octopus “Sea Of Champions”

Brother Octopus – Sea Of Champions

Brother Octopus and his Lady Friend are back with their third album “Sea Of Champions”. What’s unique about this album (well, everything is unique about this album), but all thirteen songs were recorded in thirteen different recording studios in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. Keeping it completely local even all the mixing, mastering, artwork – everything was done in Edmonton.

With songs about Bigfoot’s existence, “who would win” scenarios, and robot love you would almost expect a novelty type album. But the music throughout is catchy and smart and I was hooked from the very beginning of the first track with its tongue in cheek reenactment of radio interviews with your stereotypical DJ.

See them soon?

With no East Coast tour dates in the near future your best bet is just to purchase their album here. You’ll thank me later.

The Lunchbox Interview: Julian Christie on Games Day at the Library

Posted on 2014-11-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-GamesDayGames are fun.

That’s really the point: to enjoy your time, with friends, while playing at something. Of course, they can be much more than that: they can be educational; they can be challenging; they can be inspirational; they can be expressive; they can be…

Well, they can be a whole lot of cool things.

This Saturday is the annual Games Day at the Library, hosted at the Fredericton Public Library downtown on York Street. Julian Christie, a lifetime gamer, helps organize this day and regular games days at his own library in McAdam. He joined me today to talk games, fun and getting the whole family out to learn games they can play together.

The Lunchbox Interview: Misha Milchenko on Trans Day of Remembrance

Posted on 2014-11-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-TDORHuman beings are complicated. This is true in so many ways, but one of the ways that the world is coming to understand more and more is in the area of sexual identity. The binary concept of “male” and “female” has been inadequate to describe the full range of identities, not least of which because it combines internal, external, emotional, cultural and societal descriptions into a simple dichotomy.

My guest today is Misha Milchenko, past organizer of the Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), which occurs every November 20. It is an opportunity to recognize and remember victims of violence, oppression and anger around the world who were targeted because they identify themselves as transgender. It’s also an opportunity to challenge the language we use and the attitudes we hold, to become more inclusive and understanding. We discussed the unique issues, support and language of transgender identities, attempting to inform, instruct and correct the world.

Join them in front of Fredericton City Hall — or indeed, in many places across the world — as they hold a vigil and read the names of the victims. Bring your candle, wear something purple to show your support, and join in the remembering at 6pm on November 20.

The Lunchbox Interview: Sarah Beth Shiplet of Music On The Hill

Posted on 2014-11-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-SoundtrackToASilentFilmMovies have soundtracks.

It’s something we often take for granted these days, but as a soundtrack collector, I’m still immediately aware of the dramatic effect a good soundtrack can have — and the detrimental distraction a missing or bad soundtrack can create.

But once upon a time, moving pictures and music were just getting to know each other. Come experience what that might have been like on Wednesday evening at the latest Music on the Hill event, Live Soundtrack to a Silent Movie, as a group of musicians perform with the celebrated silent film, “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans”. That’s happening at Memorial Hall on November 19, at 7:30pm.

My guest today was the administrator of Music on the Hill, Sarah Beth Shiplet. We talked about the formation of this event, the challenges of performing music timed to a movie, and the experience of movies and music combined.
