The Lunchbox: Telling stories with Passages Canada

Where do you keep your stories?

Most people would point to something written down, journals or diaries or books, but I suspect that where your stories are really kept are in two, connected places: your head, and your things.

Look around you: there are likely things that tell your stories in any place you inhabit for a while. From the mug given to you by co-workers, to the photographs of family, to the little nicknacks or even receipts that commemorate moments in your life.

My guest today was Maddy Macnab, the Program Officer of Passages Canada. They are holding a storytelling event on Monday, from 5:30 PM to 7:45 PM, at the Fredericton Intercultural Centre in the Wellness Centre at 28 Saunders St. (You may know it as the old YMCA building.)

We talked about how the program began, some of Maddy’s most memorable story experiences with the program, and the impact and power of the smallest of items in the most touching of stories.

Music today, largely inspired by the fact that it’s Weatherman’s Day:

I simply had to play The Weatherman, Pt 2 by Alert the Medic, from their We The Weapon album;
In honour of the objects which bring memories and stories, I played Photograph by Blood and Glass, from their new album Museum With No Walls;
And a final song, again tying in to the celebration, I played Dead Sara‘s Weatherman, from their self-titled album.

There’s “making stuff up as you go”, and then there is improvisation…

The first doesn’t take talent, necessarily, and the results are often just random; the latter, however, can take a lot of talent and practice to make something so spontaneously beautiful..

My guest today is Sarah Beth Shiplett of Music UNB and Music on the Hill. She’s here to talk about the free noon-time concert on February 4 at Memorial Hall, entitled Improvisational Guitar with Joel Leblanc. Joel Leblanc is well-known for doing lots of improvisational music, so this is a must-see event. Sarah and I talked about the nature of the frame of this concert, what improvisation can me, and how it is construction on a whole new level.

Music today isn’t improvisation, necessarily, but has much the same energy:

What is addiction? We hear examples of it everyday. A person kills an innocent pedestrian driving drunk; Rob Ford smokes crack in his office; our addictions to sugar, video games, drugs, gambling, the list goes on.

We as Canadians know it takes a lot of money out of taxpayers pockets to fund rehabilitation and recovery programs, but what about long term recovery for the individual?

This episode is the “addiction as affliction” forum In The Know. Leslie Waterspoon, a recovering addict and substance abuse counselor is interviewed, hopefully giving us Canadians a better understanding of what addiction is, and what it is not. CBC is included in this forum, and of course, the humor will have you in tears, and the unique parody song, fit for This Hour Has 22 Minutes will have you in tears as well. The Crazy Train Episode #XXIX

Well despite another walloping snowstorm and both Steve ‘The Buzz Man’ Dunnett and I being sick, we had a heckuva fantastic show!

Some of the ‘Play List’ included, brand new ‘Device’ from Vancouver, some ‘Curse The Witch’ and ‘Before the Black Gates’. As well as ‘Bookakee’ and Saint John’s ‘No Man’s Throne’.

We heard some ‘Chaos Theory’ from Halifax, they’ll of course be playing a monstrous show at the Capital Complex this weekend with local faves ‘Moment of Inertia’ and ‘The Wasteland Zombies’ who will be playing their first show in Fredericton in 20 years!!!

We’d like to congratulate ‘Hero’s Last Rite’ for the ECMA nomination and wish them the best of luck!!

In Hour II, we had requests for Venom, Raven, Anthrax, Megadeth and much more!

We’d also like to note that Episode 29 was dedicated to the Gibbon family, in memory of Len Gibbon.
