Crazy train Episode #XIV

Posted on 2014-10-20 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

ctimage1

So the Crazy Train was on an hour earlier this week due to UNB Reds hockey (they won!). Had a great show, we highlighted Hero’s Last Rite and Hard Charger as they were playing a showcase show at the Elk’s Club on Brunswick st. for the MusicNB Festival. Hero’s Last Rite were nominated in the “Loud and Rock” category, which sadly they did not win, but the exposure they got through the MusicNB festival 2014 was what made it all the worthwhile. Make sure you tune in for the next couple of Crazy Train episodes, as we’ll be airing interviews from both Steven McDonald of HLR and Shawn Smith of Hard Charger.

Next week’s show will be on our regular time slot at 6-8 PM on Saturday night and although I’d been touting Episode 15 as our “Retro Train” show, I’ve decided to move the retro show until Episode 20. I got such excellent interviews with HLR, Hard Charger and Alter Ego, that I felt it wouldn’t be as timely to wait until after the “retro” show to air them. This also gives me a few more weeks to put together the best of the best in ’80’s and ’90’s Maritime Metal acts for the ‘Retro Train’ show.

I’ll try to get the ‘Play List’ for Episode XIV up as soon as I can!

Congrats to this weeks winner of the Mike Lapond’s ‘Silent Assassin’s’ merch pack, Brian Alexander Theodore Olsen! You can pick up your prize at CHSR-FM. We still have one more ‘Silent Assassin’s’ merch pack to give out, so stay tuned for that prize give-away and MORE! If you have any requests for the next show, please visit our Facebook page ‘CHSR-FM Presents: The Crazy Train’

Keep it Metal! Chris and “Buzz Man”

The Lunchbox: East Coast Love Story

Posted on 2014-10-17 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-EastCoastLoveStorySome people just radiate togetherness and happiness. That’s my immediate sense from meeting the members of East Coast Love Story, a Moncton-based band currently visiting Fredericton to take in the MusicNB Festival.

These guys aren’t just a band — they’re friends, housemates and sincerely cool cats. Join me as I do my own style of interview (in comparison with the great performance they did on Bondo’s show just last night!), and we talk about being a band, making connections and friends in the music industry and doing the nightly jam.

They are joining us at Live at the Blue Lounge on Friday night, and will be playing in the Wilser’s Room at 9pm with Les Hotesses D’Hilaire, Earthbound Trio and Wanabi Farmeur.

The Lunchbox: Michael de Adder, Author of “You Might Be From New Brunswick If..”

Posted on 2014-10-16 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-MichaeldeAdderWe all search for identity, but most of us can’t really put it into words — or pictures. Instead, we “know it when we see it.”

New Brunswick is, I think, particularly hard to describe. Every time I think I’ve gotten it, I’ve left out something, or the shade of something else isn’t entirely right.

That’s why I like books like “You Might Be A New Brunswicker If…”. They help me get a handle on something I’ve known my entire life, and they are articulated in a way I can’t manage.

I had a great conversation with Michael de Adder, editorial cartoonist and author of this new book. We talked about where these stories come from, how he crafts his art, and what he looked to include in the book.

Contest! Want a copy of Michael’s book? We have 2 to give away? Just comment (either here, or on Twitter or Facebook) and tell us: what helps you define what a New Brunswicker is? Include the hashtag #FromNB on either of those other social media.)

I aim to give away the books this Friday if I have enough entries, but if I don’t have as many as I like, I may hold the contest over until the following Friday.

The Lunchbox: Interview with Stewart Hillhouse, UNB Woodsmen Competition

Posted on 2014-10-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-WoodsmenWe are a country of trees.

They surround us; they have allowed us to build houses, mills, factories. They heat our homes and are a sturdy base for furniture. They are the substance of art, and celebration, and peace.

There is a special kind of person, however, who can chop a tree, saw a log, climb a pole and jigger a post in seconds flat.

I spoke to one such person today: Stewart Hillhouse is a student and proud UNB Woodsman. He — and a dozen-and-a-half others — are hosting the 49th annual UNB Woodsmen competition. Over 200 hundred lumberjacks and lumberjills from across the country and Northeastern US will be here to take on challenges of climbing, sawing, cutting, chainsawing and even burning wood in seconds flat. The event is on Saturday from 8am until 3pm, over by the Fredericton Exhibition Centre.

Listen as Stewart surprises me with the speed of the competitors, the practical (and impractical) nature of the woodsman’s skills, and the national nature of our wooded land.

The Lunchbox: Interview: Harry Bohnsack & Terry McDonald of Fredericton Rotary Clubs

Posted on 2014-10-10 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-rotaryThere are lots of great community organizations in Fredericton, working to improve conditions for those in need, to provide funds and spaces for the community to celebrate, meet and interact. I had the pleasure of talking to two representatives of some very active community-minded groups, the Rotary Clubs.

Harry Bohnsack of the Fredericton Sunrise Rotary Club and Terry McDonald of the Northside Rotary Club joined me to celebrate some of the great works they have been able to do so far, including the Lodge at Killarney Lake, and to talk about one of the great fundraising and prize-giving activities: Bingo!

CHSR has been simulcasting the Bingo from both clubs since May. Join in on Tuesday or Thursday nights to play along!

The Lunchbox: Interview: Keith Lyon, Author

Posted on 2014-10-09 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-KeithLyonWe all struggle with our own problems.

But there is hope.

There is help.

We can learn what we need to cope, and find the things which inspire us, which help us to see the world more clearly. In the case of my guest, Keith Lyon, it was writing. Keith struggled with mental illness, but through lots love and support from friends and family, and the assistance of professionals, he found a way through.

A big part of that recovery came through writing books, one of which is an illustrated children’s book called “Princess Madison and Princess Haley”. Keith stopped by along with friend (and CHSR host) Steve Dunnett of The Crazy Train, and we talked about his experienced, his struggle, his victory and his expression through his writing.

Bondo chats with The Naysayers

Posted on 2014-10-09 by Bondo Posted in General

NaysayersOn October 9, 2014 CHSR’s Bondo had the chance to catch up with The Naysayers, a rock n’ roll band from the remote northern town of Dawson City, Yukon. They have been stunning audiences with a unique sound recalling folk and country songwriting influences through a filter of scrappy American guitar rock, and will be hitting Fredericton stages on both October 10th and 11th.

Check out their new album “Hope“, and see them at a venue near you.
