CAFFEEN! playlist for 2014-03-22: “Synthetic”

Posted on 2014-04-04 by the Encaffeinated ONE Posted in CAFFEEN!

CFN 2014-03-22 coverartNot since the invention of plastic can we truly ever say that all things around us are authentic, and the further invention of electronics has now disassembled the remainder of things into bytes instead of atoms. Sometimes, we need to acknowledge that we live in a wholly synthetic, digital world, and embrace what we find there…

The Lunchbox: Interview with Stephen Hero

Posted on 2014-04-04 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-300x300-stephenheroMusic is open to all — or at least, that’s how we see it these days. It wasn’t always the case in hiphop, but rappers like Eminem inspired a generation to say “that’s like me, I can do that”, just like the original hiphop itself widened the world of so many young men and women.

One of these inspired young men is working on a project called Stephen Hero. It’s working class hiphop, but not reduced in flow, spirit or energy. He sat down with Tim & I to talk about his inspirations for hiphop, the Stephen Hero project, and about surprising music from Columbia House or his dad’s compilation obsession.

Stephen Hero is currently working on his first EP — two of the songs featured in this episode are previews from that EP — and will be having a video debut on FrederictonLocals.com on Monday, as well as a show next Thursday night at the Capital in Fredericton. Check out his music on BandCamp (among other places).

CAFFEEN! playlist for 2014-02-22: “Word Prey”

Posted on 2014-04-04 by the Encaffeinated ONE Posted in CAFFEEN!

CFN20140222 coverartThe structure of our universe is based on the words we used to describe it. Sometimes, it is necessary to hunt and kill the words, to take them into our souls by devouring them and they become one with our vision, one with our description.

Or sometimes, we just need a good pun..

  • In Continuum by Laraaji from the album Two Sides Of Laraaji.
  • Analog Paralysis, 1978 by Tim Hecker from the album Ravedeath, 1972.
  • Dysnomia by Dawn of Midi from the album Dysnomia.
  • We Drift Like Worried Fire by Godspeed You Black Emperor! from the album Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!.
  • No Medicine For Regret by Mogwai from the album Rave Tapes.
  • Post-Rock/Paper/Scissors by Arbor Lights from the album Arbor Lights.
  • Ethel by Russian Circles from the album Memorial.
  • Aqua Love Ice Cream Delivery Service by Mahogany Frog from the album Senna.
  • Sanchez Says, “and soon the Aces will ensue.” by Mahogany Frog from the album On Blue.

The Lunchbox: Rossum’s Universal Robots

Posted on 2014-04-03 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-300x300-rurThe play Rossum’s Universal Robots (RUR) is nearly a century old, but its cautionary vision still rings true to this very day. A new production of RUR is being staged at Memorial Hall from April 9th through 12th, with a preview performance on April 8. Director and professor Len Falkenstein joined me along with two of the actresses of the play, Jennifer Murray (who plays Helena) and Melissa Leblanc (who plays Emma) to talk about updating the play, the impact of the play today, and the experience of acting.

The Lunchbox: Jeff Richardson & Jessica Hughes of United Way

Posted on 2014-04-03 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-300x300-unitedwayThere are a lot of great volunteer and non-profit organizations which create opportunities and solve problems within the community. Sometimes, however, problems are bigger than any single organization, or more accurately, the solutions to some problems isn’t just in one area, but in several at the same time.

In times like those, it is organizations like United Way who bring individuals and groups together to tackle these challenge. Jeff Richardson and Jessica Hughes from United Way Central of New Brunswick dropped by to talk about the challenges and successes of their initiatives which gather multiple partners together to build great solutions.

STU Lunchbox: Startups + Reality TV

Posted on 2014-04-03 by encaf1 Posted in STU Lunchbox

Startups + RealityTV album artGrowth in business is a great sign for the economy, and Fredericton has been displaying some impressive kinds of growth, particularly in the independent startups. In the first half of today’s STU Lunchbox, Pat McCollough talks to some of the mover and shakers behind much of that motion, from Planet Hatch to Gerry Pond.

In the second half, Alex Vautor gives us a glimpse into the life of people who love — and love to be on — reality television. She talks about her own experiences in trying to join the cast of Big Brother Canada, as well as asking Canadian fitness icon Hal Jordan about his experience on The Amazing Race.

The Lunchbox: Discussion: Music, Memory, Mixtape

Posted on 2014-03-31 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-300x300-oldmusicNo guest today, but Station Manager “They Call Him” Tim joins me and we muse about memories of Nirvana, the notion of curated music in an age of information overload as the answer to why vinyl is so popular, and the international, instantaneous nature of all forms of music (which defeats ageism).
