The Lunchbox – Interview: John Staples on The Cross and the Closet

Posted on 2014-03-21 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

crosscloset2The world is a complicated place. Perhaps it has always been so, and individuals have always had to choose the compromises and integrations of the pressures of society, family, and your own sense of being. We think of ourselves perhaps in an enlightened age, but that only means that we can discuss these conflicts more openly. That is a great progress, but we still have work to do.

One of the conflicts that many people face are their personal feelings, morals and beliefs with that of a spiritual belief and collective faith. John Staples faced that a decade ago in his own life, and that drove him to find a reconciliation. He’s still learning, but a recent story of a student forced to either leave his church or volunteer with the LGBTQ community brought it all to the forefront.

John is now the president of Spectrum at STU and UNB, and is hosting an event, “The Cross and the Closet”, to start a dialogue, discuss what he’s discovered, and share in spreading compassion, understanding and growth. He dropped by the Lunchbox to talk about where this came from, and some of the issues surrounding his life.

The Cross & The Closet is happening at 7:00pm on March 21 at Brian Mulroney Hall, room 101.

The Lunchbox: Rosie (XWA Brain Bash) & Katey Day (Deception: The Rock Opera)

Posted on 2014-03-14 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-xwabrainbash-deceptionFriday brought with it plenty of great music and theatre combined, as well as community-minded groups. First, Roger Jean — beautifully and purply-coifed as “Rosie” — dropped by to tell me about tonight’s rockin’ charity show presented by wrestlers from XWA Pro Wrestling, local comedians and hard rockin’ bands called XWA Brain Bash. That’s happening at the Playhouse at 7pm tonight, and features Kickin’ Krotch, Chemical Misuse and Ember Atom — don’t miss it, as the proceeds go to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada!

Second, I recorded an interview with Katey Day, musician, artist and creator of a brand-new production: Deception: A Rock Opera. This show will reach Fredericton on May 24, but early-bird tickets are on sale until March 15. We talk about the collaborative and community based art, a 15-year path to the creation of this production, and how everybody’s secrets come free in Deception.

STU Lunchbox: Hockey + Basketball

Posted on 2014-03-12 by encaf1 Posted in STU Lunchbox, The Lunchbox

STU Lunchbox 20140311 albumartIt’s a sports-filled week for the STU Lunchbox! Sports play a big part in student life, but the opportunities can be sometimes harder to find. Kelsey Pye reflects on her experiences as the only girl hockey player on the boy’s team, and how hockey is trying to grow leagues for women across the province.

In the second half hour, Philip Drost puts forward his case that basketball should become the next big, national Canadian sport, and talks with coaches and players about the sport. Oh, and he plays Space Jam.
