Meredith Shaw – Trouble – review!

Posted on 2013-06-04 by Brad Schofield Posted in Maritime Vinyl, Music Reviews

Toronto’s Meredith Shaw has a brand new EP hitting the shelves this week. It follows her 2011 critically acclaimed debut album Place Called Happy, and is the first in a series of ‘tringle’ (three song) independent EP’s. Each of these EP’s will have guest musicians and producers and for the opening track,Trouble, she partners with East Coast musician Joel Plaskett himself.

IMG_8541 Co-written by Shaw and Plaskett, Trouble is the new song of choice to crank up in my car on a sunny day. With Plaskett’s great shaky vocals in the background and Shaw’s upbeat, happy voice upfront and center, this is a great single to lead out this new group of records. Singing about getting into trouble and just not caring, they put a fun twist on everything from crappy Mondays to annoying city traffic. With the clean electric guitar strumming away, the tambourine shaking in the chorus and the hand clapping keeping time, this song is just plain fun. It’s like modern bubble-gum pop and I love it!

The second track Call it a Night (co-written with her normal songwriting partner Patrick Ballantyne) keeps the catchy, fun song groove going. With the shuffling drums, quick catchy guitar strumming and strong vocals, I was singing “Oh My My” along with Meredith before I was even through the first listen. The closing number,Have You Met My Heart (co-written with Simon Wilcox), is a slower ballad full of heart and meaning, powerful enough to be a single on its own.

IMG_9569

It’s great to see artists releasing material with the 7”vinyl format in mind. In some cases, a full album is not in order and just a few short songs are sufficient. I often cringe when I see a new album released with 15-20 songs on it, knowing that most are usually half-assed and just thrown in to fill up the disc. Sometimes less is more and in these short EP’s there seems to be more thought, passion, and consideration put into them. I’m looking forward to the rest in this series.

CHSR Mini-Book Review

Posted on 2013-06-03 by Tim Rayne Posted in Music Reviews, Reviews

Doug Sutherland ‘Book Review’ of Dancer’s Rain

dancer's rayne image

When I was kid, I remember my Dad having a cool collection of rock’n roll records and boxes of crime novels – I always thought my father was cool for liking such things. In fact, the apple has not really fallen that far from the tree. I also have a large music collection and a pile of pulp fiction paperbacks. In the mid 00’s while reading the Ottawa Citizen, I stumbled on an article about a new publishing company, Hard Case Crime, that was republishing classic pulp novels along with brand new works by famous notables including Stephen King. Since then, I have read a number of pulp novels from past and present authors – including countless film noirs – pulp fiction’s cinematic counter part. The accessibility and simplicity of the crime genre has been used by many writers to capture the imaginations of the every person. The pulp genre is also know for its subversive social commentary on our ever changing society. Illustrating the constant struggle between social change and tradition. The violent clash between patriarchal traditions and the current arrested development of masculinity have become the focus of many contemporary pulp novels – making it the perfect vehicle on issues of social and personal ethical issues between the sexes. Pulp fiction will remain a controversial genre, just read Jim Thompsons’ 1952 pulp novel classic ‘The Killer Inside Me’ and compare it to the highly controversial Michael Winterbottoms 2010 cinematic adaptation of that novel.

This leads me to Doug Sutherland’s pulp novel ‘Dancer’s Rain’, a true pulpy page turner that isn’t afraid to challenge it readers personal boundaries. Dancer’s Rain is a crime book with a serial killer thread. The first few pages immediately set up the criminal themes in the novel where a young girl hitchhiking gets picked up by a brutal sexual predator. The opening quickly establishes a common theme in ‘Dancer’s Rain’, no woman is safe from the male gaze. The rural setting only amplifies traditional hyper masculine aggression towards women. Even the young female hitchhiker, who is obviously street smart and aware of the danger she is in can not prevent her brutal fate. There is nowhere to hide. No where to turn. The mother/daughter central protagonists in the story are objectified by all the males – including Frank the central protagonist. Sutherland writes female characters well but he has an uncanny ability to write erotic male fantasies. At times, the sexual urges of male dominance in the novel are shared by both protagonists and antagonistic male characters. The sexual confusion only highlights the emasculation of the men in the novel – and their excessive need to dominate women sexually and violently.

With all the pulpiness, suspense and thriller elements that exist in Dancer’s Rain, Sutherland writes some insightful, thought provoking beautiful pros bordering on poetic. So much so, that the novel transcends its genre at times causing the sexual encounters and violence to clash against its conservative rural setting. Is it unsettling? Absolutely. Blurring the lines between right & wrong, reality & fantasy, and life & death. This is a serious bit of writing hidden within an exploitation genre. This book is not about finding answers. There can only be questions. It’s not about murder, really. It is about lost innocence and the grey area in between. This book is recommended only for Adults because of its strong sexual scenes and brutal violence. With that being said, I highly recommend it.

This Ship Shows Fredericton How It’s Done

This Ship at Gallery Connexions

Saturday June 2, 2013 Maritime Vinyl’s Brad Schofield and I had the chance to interview Halifax band This Ship about their current tour, new album release and who they’re listening to.

Later that evening they played an all-ages show at Gallery Connexion so I went down to check them out. Having seen them live for the first time in March during ECMA week I knew I would be in for a treat. When I arrived there This Ship already had the audience dancing and the band was at full sail. The crowd was really digging it, the kids formed a huge dancing circle and everyone was just having fun. About halfway through their set even the parents who had been hiding by the entrance had come over to check This Ship out. It’s hard to not be affected by their jangly rock sound. Keytars, tambourines, and sometimes even a glockenspiel? Bethany Fulde on lead guitar rocked it out while Jordan Stephens on bass is an absolute beast. Justin Wiles keeps the keytar sound new and current while Adam Martin hammered out the beats.

All The Stars & Elements

Collectively as a relatively new band the chemistry between them was tight. And even though they just released their new album “All The Star & Elements” we were treated to some new edgier tracks that will be part of an EP released the end of this summer.

For more information on This Ship check out www.thisship.ca, and listen to their interview at the CHSR 97.9FM studio here: http://chsrfm.ca/blog/2013/06/01/bondo-and-maritime-vinyls-brad-interview-halifax-band-this-ship/

Ultra Ska Robot Attack is the Show of the Month – June

Posted on 2013-06-01 by Nuchtchas Posted in Show of the Month

1USRA) What made you start your show?

The Ultra Ska Robot Attack started up a few years ago (2010) with founding members Ben and Rhys. It presumably came from a deep unsatisfied need for Ben and Rhys to share their hooliganism on the air waves, also ska. The show is currently co-hosted by Ben, Ky, and Simon (aka Checkers the horse).

2) Tell us a little about your yourself?

We’re all undergrads (or in the case of Rhys, was) at UNB studying physics, and have been doing so for about 4 years. That might seem oddly specific, but it’s pretty important considering that’s how we all met. At first it was a bit frustrating trying be a lab partner with a horse (a lack of opposable thumbs really makes calibrating instruments difficult), but we eventually overcame that obstacle and became great friends.

Hosts: Ben (back), Simon (right), & Ky (front).

Hosts: Ben (back), Simon (right), & Ky (front).

3) Who would be your dream guest on your show?

Before Simon and Ky started co-hosting the show Ben and Rhys had already interviewed The Planet Smashers, an amazing Canadian ska band; that guest would be pretty hard to top. As far as Canadian bands go Rude City Riot is one of our favorites, and it would be super rad if they came on the show. Going international, the craziest guest we’d love to have on the show would probably be Leningrad. They’re a Russian band that is supposedly so vulgar that the mayor of Moscow has banned them from playing at any large events within the city.

4) What made you decide to come to CHSR to air your show?

We’re all students at UNB so it made sense for us to use such great resource located conveniently on campus. Besides that, CHSR is the most open and diverse media outlet in town. Who else would let 3 twenty-something guys with no previous experience talk about, and play some ska for an hour every Monday night?

5) Where do you see the show going in the future?

All of us current members are graduating next year (fingers crossed), and we will be going our separate ways all over the world. We don’t have any direct succession planned locally, but we are exploring ways of syndicating the show to keep our content flowing. Until then we want to finish our stay in Fredericton with style, hopefully by sprucing up the ska scene in town!

Tune in while you can to Ultra Ska Robot Attack Monday nights at 10pm!

This Ship – All the Stars and Elements- Review!

Posted on 2013-05-31 by Brad Schofield Posted in Maritime Vinyl, Music Reviews

The debut LP titled All the Stars and Elements from Halifax indie pop-rock band This Ship just hit the online world on May 22nd. It has five long numbers filled with chilling harmonies, complex drumming, artsy guitar and pretty much any other instrument they could get their hands on. Hell, they even use their hands with steady, fun clapping that’s sure to be an audience favourite at their live shows.

The band consists of Bethany Fulde on vocals and guitar; Justin MacPherson Wiles on vocals, keyboards and keytar; Jordan Stephens on vocals and bass; and Adam Martin on vocals and drums. Their influences include The Beatles, Wintersleep and Arcade Fire, yet they sound completely original. All the songs are clocking in at well over five minutes apiece (two are over seven), which usually makes me nervous as long songs tend to be filled with repetition (heres looking at you Don McLean) or ridiculous showboat soloing. However, This Ship keeps me interested. It’s almost as if they use a progressive rock formula of multiple instrument and vocal layers, yet they do it all with a fun indie pop-rock sound.

Just being a band for a little over a year, This Ship has been keeping a steady flow of shows under their belts finishing two Ontario and Quebec tours in 2012. Their calendar is quickly filling with gigs this summer as well to support the release of All the Stars and Elements including a show in Fredericton at the Gallery Connexion on Saturday June 1st. As an added bonus, they are stopping in Quebec at the end of their tour to record a new three song EP, really keeping the momentum rolling. I’ll be sure to keep my eyes open for this release.

The band is scheduled to appear on the June 3rd episode of Homemade Jams on 97.9 CHSR FM. Host Bondo always proves to have thorough and entertaining interviews so it will be a great opportunity to get acquainted with This Ship.

You can download All the Stars and Elements on their Bandcamp page here, and pay by donation. I’m not sure if there will be a physical CD or vinyl release for this album, but here’s hoping!
