CHSR Session: A Primitive Evolution

Posted on 2013-10-11 by Matt Nightingale Posted in Sessions @ CHSR

Hailing from the mystical, magical land of Ontario, A Primitive Evolution (hereby referred to as ‘A.P.E.’) decided to rock our world with an amazing, full-electric session. They made us dance even though we can’t, and we absolutely love them for it.

Many props to Brett Carruthers (Singer/Guitarist/Audio nerd) for remastering the session himself in his own time. Otherwise, it was me (Matt Nightingale) working the boards and doing the interview.

Featured nonprofit of the month – Charlotte Street Art Center Haunted House

Posted on 2013-10-10 by Nuchtchas Posted in non profit of the month

CSAC Haunted House FlyerThis month we are shining a spotlight on the Charlotte Street Art Center and their annual Haunted House!

1) Can you tell us about the mission of your organization?

Our vision statement is to “open the doors of creative expression to all“. That means removing barriers to opportunities in the arts so that everyone can have access to them. We do this by providing free educational programs to underprivileged groups, for one – that’s what the proceeds of the Haunted Tour go to support: our long-standing ArtReach program. Through ArtReach, we partner with a dozen other community organizations to open up arts programming to their (our) communities.

more details please click: http://charlottestreetarts.ca/index.php/site/about

2) Do you have any big events coming up?

This year’s Haunted Tour is going to be much different from all the previous years. The LOW SCARE tours (for kids) are being moved to Science East, so the Charlotte Street Arts Centre is going to have four days of HIGH SCARE only tours (for adults). It’s going to be scarier than ever! Also, there’s a more streamlined path of horror for visitors, so wait times will be a lot less. The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick have worked really, really hard on offering this tour each year as a fundraiser for the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Every year, they have more new ideas to ramp up the freak factor, and just keep outdoing themselves.

The Haunted Tour
http://charlottestreetarts.ca/index.php/site/full-event-details/475

After the Haunted Tour, we’ll be kicking into full gear to get ready for the upcoming 3rd Annual New Brunswick Musicians Emerge Festival. This one’s going to be really great. Over 70 different NB musicians and music groups applied to be a part of it and a committee selected 8 bands to perform. More info on the event is below:

NB-ME Festival (New Brunswick Musicians Emerge)
http://charlottestreetarts.ca/index.php/site/full-event-details/456

3) Can you tell us about the actors involved in this event? What you are looking forward to most about this year’s Haunted House?

Yes, there will be actors but their identities will need to remain confidential….one of the other theatrical groups who will be participating this year is led by Judy Lavigne of Madrigal Players. Each night will have a little bit of a different theme…and there will be a weave of various performing artists entertaining throughout the evening. FYI  – the Engineers APEGNB are the driving force behind this fundraising event.

This year we are opening for 4 nights in order to keep the line up times down at this popular event. This year the tour path is different – the focus/design of the tour at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre is med-high scare, and the low scare for kids will be relocated to Science East.

4) What is it about Fredericton and the surrounding area that makes your mission so important?

The mission to promote the arts – providing accessible and high quality programming is always important to the community. We have a vibrate creative community that we continue to nurture and celebrate.

There’s no other place like the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in Fredericton and surrounding areas. We make art accessible to people who wouldn’t normally have access. We work to provide opportunities to marginalized communities, the elderly, youth-at-risk, women and children recovering from domestic abuse, and more.

5) What do you hope to see for your organization in the coming year?

We hope to see the organization grow steadily, and plan to continue to strive for excellence in regards to facility and programming, in order to serve the needs of artists and the community.

We’d really like to increase access to our facility by installing an adequate elevator. The single-person lift we currently have will only take one individual at a time from the first floor to the second floor in the front part of the building. Most of our events, the café, etc are all in the back part of the building and people with mobility challenges can’t partake. It’s our goal to keep working on this over the coming year and for as long as it takes until we achieve our goal.

CAFFEEN! playlist for 2013-10-05: “The Light Is Bright and Dim”

Posted on 2013-10-09 by the Encaffeinated ONE Posted in CAFFEEN!

CFN2013-10-05 coverartCan a contradiction really exist?

Even if self-conflict is dismissed as semantic, perhaps it might have an edge of truth. Perhaps it sees truth from its vantage point. Perhaps, from a higher dimension of existence, it is the real thing, and you, the caustic, skeptical observer, you are the contradiction, the edge of existence.

2013 Bike for Breath report

Posted on 2013-10-04 by Nuchtchas Posted in General

FrednRe_2013b4bLast sunday Fred (from “Hi! I’m Fred”) and I participated in the NB Lung Association’s signature event, the Bike for Breath, for a second time.  Last year was our first year doing it and we trained all summer.  We wanted to do it as a physical challenge to ourselves but then found it was such a rewarding event that we knew we would be coming back this year.  Last year we had great weather leading up to the event and miserable weather during the event.  This year we had a lot of rain leading up to the event making training difficult but the day of the weather couldn’t have been better.  It was perfect.  Warm in the sun, cool in the shade.  No wind to speak of at all.  Perfect day for a ride.

Fred was signed up for the 66K and I was signed up for the 17K (it was a 28K last year which is a better distance for me I think).  One day I’d like to do the longer ride, but 66K is just out of my reach at the moment.  Another difference from last year is I have a new (to me) bike.  Last year I had a cruiser which I loved, it got me back into biking and made me feel like a kid again, but this year I needed a real roadie.  Lucky for me my mother offered me her old one, I just had to bring it up from NY.

The routes for both races were beautiful, even if you don’t get to do the bike for breath you should travel these routes, you will see prettier landscapes than you ever believed were around Fredericton.  Don’t get me wrong, I love our city and the surrounding area, driving along the river you can’t deny its ascetic appeal, but riding on a bike through the changing colours of fall, going over bridges and riding past rapids, it was awe-inspiring.

When we finished the ride we each felt amazing.  Unlike how I feel after a run, I felt like a super hero!  I felt like I could have done it again.  I felt amazing and I was pumped up.  The volunteers were very nice and had quite the energy boosting spread ready for us.  After the ride we chatted with other riders and waited for our heart rates to return to normal.

Later, there was the Chill Out.  Bikers who raid $50 or more are invited to join the Chill Out, it’s a little celebration with food in the James Joyce Pub and a beer tasting from Picaroons. (this beer tasting last year made us Picaroons customers)  Again there was an opportunity to mingle with other bikers and get to know people, but more importantly this was where the NB Lung Association was able to present to us all of the amazing things they have been doing over the last year.  This where I discovered some of the bikers I was riding with and paling around with all day were lung transplant survivors, one a double lung (talk about real super heroes).  How one of the bikers I had spent a good long time chatting with was the father of Catharine Pendrel, Olympic mountain biker and spokesperson for the Bike for Breath.

We found ourselves already planning for next year.  Next year we’d like to have a full CHSR team.  Sure not everyone will bike, but we can raise money together and support each other.  I encourage anyone reading this to get involved, and when there is an event like this in our community jump in!  It might make you feel like a super hero!
