Tim Rayne’s Mini Review: Tonella – Compromise (EP)

Posted on 2013-02-19 by Tim Rayne Posted in Instant Breakfast, Music Reviews

Tim Rayne’s Mini Review: Tonella – Compromise (EP)

Tonella is a band that happens to be fronted by Tonella Roy. A Fredericton four piece rock outfit that mixes genres with a hard rocking foundation, catchy pop melodies, and soulful crooning. Backed by strong production, the Compromise EP easily shifts from intimate piano ballads to hard crunching rock hooks. The lyrics are reflective and at times remorseful; however, the juxtaposition of melancholy only heightens the explosive musical bursts of hope and optimism. The confidence and song-craft demonstrated on Compromise illustrates Tonella’s dynamic range. Opening track, Never Coming Back Again fully captures the band’s poppy orchestration, highlighting the EP’s strengths. The combination of female and male vocals elevates the song in both lyrical themes and music composition. The EP’s title track Compromise follows, possibly the strongest song on the album. Catchy? Hell yea…sticks with you long after you listen to it. Tonella Roy’s powerful voice steals the show, along with the great key/electronic hook. Foolish Heart is the ballad on the record and it carries with it a heavy weight of past memories and lost love. The next track, Tell Tale Lie, breaks away completely into a rocky, jazzy up tempo party jam reminiscent of playful Queens of the Stone Age riffage. The EP closes with The Separation, a therapeutic rocker that brings the record to its thematic conclusion of love and loss. Tonella proves that ROCK is still alive in the Maritimes. Check them out at http://tonella.bandcamp.com/album/compromise

Quick Pick: John Jerome and the Congregation

Posted on 2013-02-15 by Bondo Posted in Homemade Jams, Music Reviews

JJCNow this is one congregation I wouldn’t hesitate to join. This Moncton quintet may be newly formed but you would never know it as John Jerome an the Congregation took me by surprise when they took the usually overdone vintage rock vibe to a whole other level. Absolutely brilliant. John Jerome’s voice is a perfect fit and the addition of the mandolin to certain tracks is what makes this album special and unique. Just when you thought you heard the best song on the album the next one comes on and makes you sit back and say “oh man”. Ask Not What I Can Do For You, But What We Can Do Together is released March 12, 2013 and it’s a disservice to yourself if you don’t pick one up.

Standout Tracks:

Great Claims Of Grandeur

Unconditional Aid

Oh Lord

Instant Breakfast’s Mini Review: Sean One – Jack Nicholson (album)

Posted on 2013-02-13 by Tim Rayne Posted in Instant Breakfast, Music Reviews

Sean One

Fredericton’s Sean-One‘s new release Jack Nicholson

Tim Rayne’s Mini Review – When I was 7 years old, my folks were driving us around Toronto when I heard Herbie Hancock’s Rocket on the radio. I asked my parents to buy it for me and they did – it was my first tape. My life was changed forever and my love for hip hop was permanently instilled in my psyche. From Terminator X, DJ Maceo, DJ Shadow to J Dilla and MF Doom, I have loved listening to beatmaker releases. I have known Shiggy Sean-One for a number years. In fact we took a fun Sociology of music class with Professor Peter Weeks back ‘in the day’. Besides being the beatmaker for many great local acts (Monark, First Words, Above and more), Sean has managed to be prolific with his own beat output. I am personally a big fan of instrumentals of all genres so Sean One’s releases are always a welcome surprise. Lately, the cinematic homages in his recent releases are just icing on the cake. Phat beats interlaced with jazzy scores, rocking guitar, classic era soundscapes illustrate the dynamic range and sophistication of Mr. One’s skills. To select specific songs from this album would entirely miss the point because its all about flow. Sit back, close your eyes, and listen to the rich collection of songs from a guy who truly ‘digs’ his sound.

Check out the album on bandcamp. http://seanone.bandcamp.com/

The Damn Truth – “Dear In The Headlights”

Posted on 2013-02-12 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams

The Damn Truth is my latest obsession. A rock n’ roll band from Montreal, they infused elements of blues and classic rock to bang out their new album Dear In The Headlights. Imagine mixing together The Black Keys with a dash of The White Stripes. They tackle the “throwback to the ’70′s sound” without taking it too literal like The Sheepdogs. And the vocals! The Damn Truth’s Lee-La sounds an awful lot like The Balconies’ Jacquie Neville, and that’s probably the biggest compliment I could ever give.

From the very beginning my toe was tapping, I found myself turning it up louder and louder which is appropriate as the back of their CD reads For Optimal Experience Play This Record Loud.

Track by track this entire album is strong, you’ll find no filler here.

Stand out tracks:

Kinda Awkward,

I Want You (He’s A Lightweight),

Too Late
