Fredericton TweetUp!

Posted on 2013-03-17 by Nuchtchas Posted in Events, Music Reviews
What happens at a Tweet Up

Last night quite a few CHSR members and myself went to the (@FredTweetUp) Fredericton TweetUp that was held at the (@FredFarmMarket) Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market.  What’s a tweetup you ask?  A tweetup is the actual face-to-face meeting of Twitter users. Tweetups are a chance for users to meet in real life and convert 140 character engagements or conversations into actual lengthy exchanges.

This was my second tweetup ever, both of which were in Fredericton, I read on twitter last night that this has been going on for three years running.  I had a blast and I think almost everyone that was there did too.  I’m relatively new to Fredericton, I’ve only been here since August 2011 so a lot of local things everyone knows about are new to me.

While I love the Market (both) and have been known to go once a month or so, I got to sample a lot of things that are staples of the market but I haven’t seen there yet.  Personally, the Market is a sensory overload for me, so many things to see and filled with so many people I can’t take my time to see it all.  I got to sample @Magzys smashed Lemon and Lime aid, which was so good, I lost count at how many I had, as a DD it was nice to have a treat. @TheHotLollies were handing out chocolate covered cheese cake, that was amazing. The Frosted Cupcake had small cupcakes which were very good, and I say that as a baker myself.  Family Favourites were the ones with the red pepper jam on gouda and raspberry jalapeno jam on brie, which were quite tasty.  The Bundles that were being passed around were amazing, they were offered by The Bundle Hut and I plan to return for more.  There were sausages that were being passed around by @ChickadeeLarder (mustard) & Hans the German (sausage) that my friends just loved, and the Nut Hut had these great candied nuts.

I’m told by others that the bar prices were more than decent.  There was extra food available for purchase, and drinks like soda.

There were some old favorites of mine being represented too, A Taste of Greek’s meat and yogurt sauce, the fish chowder being passed around by John Henry’s, it’s a blue food truck by temptation ally, I’ve bought it a time or two before.

With (@nuchtchas) me was @encaf1 the Program Director of CHSR, @Dr4Physics Adam, host of Fredericton This Week & The Cutting Room Floor, @the_clock_doc Fred who volunteers in the tech department, we also saw members @JaclynReinhart & @missjackiec and there may have been more, but it really was a packed house.  I personally followed six new local people, and quite a few vendors from the market as well as the band.

Pretty in Pink rocked the night

Let’s talk about the band.  Pretty In Pink (@80sPrettyInPink) played the tweet up, and I had never heard them before.  They are amazing.  Pretty in Pink is an 80’s cover band, but they have the ability to perform Madonna, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, and Freddy Mercury without losing the tone of each song.  Throw in their songs from Rick Springfield, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Bon Jovi, and everything else they played, and still every song was dead on.  They had the spirit of the songs and the talent of every musician up there was impressive.  I’m a metal chick and I was dancing like a fool, tweeting and dancing that is.  I know that if I see Pretty in Pink listed as playing another event in Fredericton, I will be sure to go.

All in all it was a great night.  It was 300% better than my last tweetup which was still a 9/10.  Last night was fun because the location made it easy to mingle and walk around and the entertainment kept the energy level up.  Not to mention the samples going around, I know for sure I will be frequenting all of these vendors in the near future.  I can’t wait for the next tweetup!

UPDATE: According to @FredFarmMarket “Just In! We raised $855 for Women In Transition House at #fredtweetup. Thanks all for your contribution to this very important organization.”

Bookstores Galore

Posted on 2013-03-16 by katrina Posted in A Month of Saturdays

I’m a book-lover. I admit it: the smell of old pages, the feeling of cracked spines in my hands, and the stories they tell. Sometimes I don’t even want to read them, I just want to adore them piled on bookshelves. One of the few places in Fredericton I try to frequent are bookstores and libraries. So far in Fredericton I’ve only been to Westminster Books, the UNB Harriet Irving Library and Owl’s Nest Bookstore.

While the library is anything one can expect from a campus library, I was excited about it because the idea of having a real library on campus is brilliant to me (coming from Saint John, where they closed their library and placed it in the Hans W. Klohn Commons building – yuck). Westminster Books is also unsurprising – a nice, small bookstore, selling only new books. The space felt open and the staff was friendly. On their website, you can order in books and they also have a book club, which is really easy to become a member of. Members get special discounts on certain items and give out a monthly thank-you gift after doing a draw on members who have made a purchase during that month.

Owl’s Nest Bookstore was quite a treat. Although it’s a little more hectic than I’d normally like, there was tons to it. There were books on the main floor, going back rooms and rooms and rooms full of books, as well as an upstairs that went almost as far. The books are arranged nicely into categorized sections, and the books are then alphabetized by author in those sections. However, as any used-bookstore will tend to be, some books do tend to get messed up in their ordering. It seems they’ve got such a large collection that it must be hard to keep one-hundred percent organized.

That wasn’t really an issue, though, and after asking for help locating a few books, I found what I was looking for and was pleased by the quality of service from whom I expected to be the owner. There are also quite a few cute little notes laying around: various short comics (Bug), a map of the store, as well as funny jokes and puns all over the place. They’ve also got their cat, whose name I now forget, who you can find either wandering through the store or lounging on their couch (for shoppers who’d like to sit and read a bit before their purchase). Along with your every-day fiction and non-fiction, they’ve got comic books, manga, and records as well.7974752558_6486e668bb_z

The only downside I could find was that they only accept cash. Maybe I’m just careful with my money, but I don’t like to carry change with me unless it has a specific purpose, so not being able to purchase books with debit is a bit of a downer. Overall, the place felt cozy and welcoming and had the aroma of books which I so love. I wanted to sit down with a cup of coffee and pet their cat, and read until I was kicked out.

Hopefully I’ll find some more gems like this one as I make more frequent trips outside of home and school.

CHSR Under the Radar Films – American Movie (1999, Documentary)

Posted on 2013-03-12 by Tim Rayne Posted in Film Reviews

download

CHSR Under The Radar Films

American Movie (1999) Director Chris Smith

The term ‘independent’ filmmaking has become non sequitur…maybe it has always been. The once insurmountable dream of making a feature length film has recently become a reality. Not to undermine or ignore the essential elements of craft or skill required to make anything of merit, the production tools for filmmaking have truly become accessible and available to the public – a historical moment in the populous medium of filmmaking (even if the term film is problematic or dated in the digital age). Filmmaking is truly ‘independent’. Just like the music industry before it, independent cinema is finding its DIY roots.

Before this recent revelation of freedom for the DIY filmmaking community, there were always pioneers who truly were from the fringes of the industry. Hell, literally in the backwoods. Filmmaker Chris Smith captured the passion and love of filmmaking from the most unlikely of subjects. Mike Borchardt and Mike Shank at first glance could be misinterpreted as the Beavis and Butthead of filmmakers; however, their passion and devotion to filmmaking is contagious, od not, inspirational. They are ‘real’ people trying to make a film for little money, no matter the cost. For me, they represent the spirit of the NB Film Coop. American Movie is one of the best documentaries I have seen on filmmaking with its hilarious, poignant, and endearing story of one man’s determination to make his dreams a reality. Success is in the eyes of the beholder or in Mike Borchardt’s case ‘Coven’. Highly recommended.
