Another Gallery? Yes and No: The New Artisan Studio

Posted on 2013-03-09 by katrina Posted in A Month of Saturdays, Events

I’ve been spending the last several days of March Break in Saint John, in which it proves somewhat difficult to find local events. Saint John is notorious for having very little going on in comparison to Fredericton, but it was nice to spend some time back home. However, wandering off to the Saint John Community Events Calendar online, I located a very interesting exhibit.

DSC02305Located at 87 Germain Street in uptown Saint John, The New Artisan Studio proved to be a worthwhile experience. Owned and run by Heather and Kevin Day-Thorburn, the gallery holds a boutique out front with the art gallery in the back. Kevin mentioned that they planned to keep a 75/25 per cent split of local to non-local artists featured in the gallery.

Before speaking in-depth with Heather and Kevin, I took a walk through the gallery with Kyle Roberts, a writer from UNB Saint John’s newspaper, The Baron. Currently the featured artists include Jeff McLennan, whose photography was based on local Saint John scenes as well as from Paris, Spain, and Morocco. The photography had a somewhat gothic/distorted twist, with much of it in black and white; it examined nature, architecture, and machinery. Another featured artist that popped out to me was Tammy Cassidy, whose artwork was colourful and bright acrylic, slightly abstracted, nature scenes. Out in the boutique there were hand-crafted sculptures, vases, and jewelry for sale as well.

DSC02307The space was small, but very cozy with calming music playing and a comfortable atmosphere. Heather and Kevin were extremely warm and friendly, and very helpful when asked about their plans for the gallery. Heather mentioned that they were always looking for new artists and new talent. Rather than asking a fee for artists to display their pieces, they instead ask only for commission from the purchased artworks. Heather said that their plan was to make the gallery “accessible to anyone”, hoping to feature more events such as poetry, writing, and music.

Up-and-coming on their events, The New Artisan Gallery is having an acrylic painting class with one of their featured artists, Sheila Howell, for anyone who’s interested in learning how or simply practicing abstract artwork. The event begins March 27th for 5 weeks, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Heather and Kevin can be reached at 506-646-0655 during business hours to learn more.

DSC02309

Kyle, when asked about his thoughts on the gallery, said he thought it was “intimate, not as stuck-up as most private galleries tend to be,” he continued, “I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it before stumbling upon it today. The fact that they’re accommodating local artists for commission alone is a great way to support the growing art community in Saint John.”

Under the Radar – Mini Film Review – The Conversation

Posted on 2013-03-06 by Tim Rayne Posted in Film Reviews

the_conversation_posterThe Conversation (1974) – Coppola

Not many people are aware of Francis Ford Coppola’s film, The Conversation. I suspect there are a few obvious reasons why the film is somewhat overlooked in Coppola’s oeuvre. For one, it was produced between the epic masterpieces The Godfather 1 & 2. The Conversation is formally more experimental causing it to be less accessible for mainstream audiences, and finally, it was conceptually ahead of its time thematically in its paranoid vision of technological advancements ton issues of personal privacy. In fact, I see The Conversation as a strong companion piece to another 70s masterpiece, Sidney Lumet’s Network (1976). When watched today, The Conversation not only holds up, it stands tall as a timely masterpiece in foreshadowing very contemporary issues of privacy and misinformation as a result of technology. It also presents a reflective commentary on whether or not as human beings we are ready psychologically to comprehend the inherent changes of perception caused by these advancements. Although the film itself was produce on an analogue format and the sound technology used in the narrative itself is also analogue, one could argue this is one of the first digital themed films…I mean, I did watch it on Blu Ray ;). Maybe Gene Hackman’s character Harry Caul was the first 21 First Century Digital Boy. The film is a haunting, challenging, and highly rewarding viewing experience…even comforting.

Listen to episode 236 now!

This week on the only LIVE comics radio show that isn’t afraid to hind behind a mask, we welcome the artist of MASKS from Dynamite Entertainment, Dennis Calero to the Monster Cave. You’ve seen Dennis’ work on X-Men: Noir as well as Captain Victory from Dynamite’s Kirbyverse. He joins us tonight to catch us up on his activity since he was last our guest. This is, of course a LIVE interview so, if you have a question for Dennis, feel free to post it on our Facebook wall or give us a call at 506-453-4949.

We also watched the brand new Iron Man 3 trailer as it was released today and it got us all super excited to see the first installment of Marvel: Phase 2. We’ll be joined at the top of the show by Brent O’Hara, who is a writer and artist for Advanced Iron, Iron Man’s fan magazine, and also one of the volunteers on the committee that’s steering the ECCE. Brent will be lending his vast Iron Man knowledge to help us break down what exactly we were seeing in this great new peek at Marvel Studios’ next offering.

We will also be reviewing The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror #1, which we picked up at Strange Adventures, in our ‘Shit Comic Reviewers Say’ segment.

DocTalks: Marley

Posted on 2013-03-05 by news Posted in Events, Film Reviews

Marley documentary

Great way to  end the month and begin the March break here at the university! DOCTalks, an event aimed at “engaging, enlightening and empowering people and communities, with the goal of promoting deeper levels of understanding and creating sustainable change within society – locally and globally” has been on going since the 14th of February.

The 28th of February tagged “An evening of Bob Marley and Reggae”, captured the life of Marley from a documentary shown during the event. It explored Marley’s life and revealed the sociocultural effects his association with reggae had on the world as a whole. The night was brought to an end with a live performance by Dub Antenna, who through their performance paid tribute to influential reggae artists including Marley himself.

Nesta Robert “Bob” Marley was born in the remote Jamaican village of Nine Mile in 1945.  His father, Norval Marley, was a white man. His mother, Cedella, was black. As mentioned by one of the interviewees when asked if Bob was teased for being mixed, he replied that he felt rejected by his peers whilst growing up. Although for him, it did not matter; rather than wallow in this rejection, he embraced a form of independence and social defiance, and a mission to bring people together in an inter-racial brotherhood. He grew up in extreme poverty, first in the countryside, then in the slums of Kingston’s Trenchtown.  Trenchtown as mentioned by Marley and his friends was his major inspiration. It sparked his creativity, because everything and anything happened there with him witnessing it firsthand, and he was able to incorporate this into his love for music. Bob spoke of Trenchtown as being viewed as a place filled with hoodlums when he still lived there and he decided to change that, and now (the time of the interview) all sorts of talents had evolved. He emitted a sense of tranquility, believing that the purpose of life was to be happy and live in peace, love and unity. This was a major characteristic of the Rastafarian’s, which came to be seen as a religion. Their physical appearance and their actions were seen as very important to their identity, and showing this towards the society. His music carried so much meaning as the documentary shows, and spurred a lot of change in society. This made people realize that change was needed and want it in the society as much as Marley did.

Kevin Macdonald captures his story eventfully by thoroughly exploring Bob’s life and how his career progressed as a whole. It explores the number the influences on Bob Marley’s life as well. The documentary aims to understand the reason for Marley’s unending influence on the world, and it is indeed a very definitive collection and display of Bob Marley’s life in one location. This is a documentary that is going to have deeply resonating effects in the music community and the world in general.

Beaverbrook Art Gallery: Tour and Exhibitions

Posted on 2013-03-02 by katrina Posted in A Month of Saturdays

beaverbrook-art-gallery070326I was never much of an “art connoisseur”, despite my growing respect and admiration for the visual arts. This week, however, I decided to take it upon myself to get a little more educated. On Thursday, I had made my way back downtown to Beaverbrook Art Gallery, where I had the chance to meet with Terry Graff, the curator of the gallery. I arrived quite a bit early because of my drive, so I took a walk through the gallery beforehand. Having never been inside the gallery, it was quite an experience. Beautiful pieces of artwork in each exhibition, coupled with antique furniture, tapestries, and dishes (along with some paintings from children aged 10 and 11 downstairs).

When I met up with Terry, we first discussed the Masterworks exhibition. The exhibition, on tour with 75 of the favourite pieces of Beaverbrook’s collection, is a North American tour over the span of 3 years, currently residing in Palm Beach, Florida’s Society of the Four Arts until March 30th. Terry said that it was a long, complex project, and it was especially a struggle moving Salvador Dali’s piece, Santiago El Grande, as it barely fits on the moving truck. This is only the second time the piece has left the gallery in 50 years.  Terry’s plan was to share the collection with the rest of North America, and after doing extensive research on Beaverbrook himself (and his motivations for beginning the gallery), the result was the Masterworks book and the tour.

dali_santiago-el-grandeFollowing the Masterworks discussion, we spoke of one of the popular exhibitions that is currently in the Gallery. The Fabric of Her Life, stunning fabric art by Charlotte Glencross, was an absolutely amazing exhibition to see. Charlotte was a large part of the art community in Fredericton, and her death was terribly sad for many.  She was very well liked and known; however, very few people knew of the artwork that she, herself, was producing. Upon her death, her family offered to give many of the pieces to Beaverbrook Art Gallery, where they are currently paying tribute to her life – even recreating her workspace with the combination of her loom (used for weaving) brought into the gallery, featuring stunning textile work of linen, cotton, and wool.

The other exhibitions currently part of the program include Art Treasures of New Brunswick and Dreams of Order at the Edge of Chaos: Contemporary Geometric Abstraction.

When asked to define the current program, Terry said that the three words he would use to describe it were “collaboration, community, and collection”. His excitement about the current exhibitions and the Masterworks tour was beautiful, and speaking with him was an adventure in itself. Walking through the gallery with him and discussing some of the pieces is an experience I will never forget, and I hope to cover more of Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s programs in the future.

CHSR Mini Review – Forward Music Group Sampler 2013

Posted on 2013-02-27 by Tim Rayne Posted in East Coast Stream, Instant Breakfast, Music Reviews

CHSR Mini-Review – Forward Music Group Music Sampler 2013

784078356-1

The Forward Music Group label has released some of the ‘best of the best’ East Coast music since 2006. The Olympic Symphonium, Snail House, Gypsophilia, Gianna Lauren, and Paper Beat Scissors are some of the acts on Forward Music Group’s roster. The impressive line-up presents a diverse range of musical styles and genres while remaining true to the labels definable sound that happens to celebrate regional identity. The jazzy theatricality and high energy of Gyposphilia somehow manages to fit nicely with Snail House’s Michael Feuerstack minimalist folk-rock. Gianna Lauren’s angelic vocals is soothing, while being subversively playful in a devilishly self-reflexive tone. Paper Beat Scissors warm, albeit short, folk chamber pop number does not feel out of place when juxtaposed against the traditional stylings of Alan Jeffries regional flair. The stand out track for me is the Olympic Symphnonium track State of the Union Address which has been remixed (reinterpreted) by an unknown hip hop act – it is staggeringly brilliant. If this is an accurate indication of what to expect from the Forward Music Group in 2013, music fans are in for a hell of run of releases. The artists on the label manage a subtle regional identity in their music while providing an individuality that is each their own. Have a listen.
