(Epic) Episode 2: Childhood Toys, Part 1 of 2

Posted on 2013-04-15 by Marc Cabot Posted in EPIC!

Joel and Marc look back at the and the epic toys that shaped their childhoods. They talk about the toys that made them jealous, mad, and the ones they always wanted, but never had.

Hosts: Marc Cabot and Joel Richard.

Background

Due to the fact that we release our show on a local radio station, we must adhere to a strict time limit on our episodes. Once we started talking in the studio, Joel and I went on for quite a while about our favourite childhood toys. In the end, we had well over double the allotted time recorded. So, to make sure it all aired, we split it into two episodes.

This episode was recorded in the earlier days before we actually started airing Epic. At this point, we were toying around with using the phrase, “You’re listening to Epic” at the end of each Sketch. This did not last.

(Epic) Episode 1: Scams and Schemes.

Posted on 2013-04-15 by Marc Cabot Posted in EPIC!

Marc and Joel talk about various scams and schemes made popular with today’s technology.  We discuss phishing and how people can use it to get your World of Warcraft authenticator information, banking information, etc.  Joel talks about how his family computer was once  compromised with a trojan horse virus through ICQ.  Marc points out the security weaknesses in the old chat programs.  We also take a look at the dangers of penny auctions.

Hosts

  • Marc Cabot (@MarcCabot)
  • Joel Richard (@JoelARichard)

Show Notes

Although this was the first episode of Epic to be published, it was not the first episode we wrote. I had originally intended Epic to be an educational pod cast regarding amazing accomplishments throughout history by people like Einstein, Tesla, etc. I quickly realized that the effort required in research to keep such a pod cast going would be far too difficult while working a 9-5 job and raising a small child. Joel and I recorded a few episodes prior to this, but we quickly came to the conclusion that they were dry and not very entertaining.

In an effort to make our pod cast more entertaining we tried doing a little sketch at the beginning of the episode. This was mostly just to play around with the idea, but it made it in.

This was our first attempt at making an episode that was entertaining and educational. We become more unformatted and relaxed in the topics and conversations we have in later episodes.

Featured Non-Profit of the Month – Ca-R-Ma Cat Rescue

Posted on 2013-04-15 by Nuchtchas Posted in non profit of the month, Specialty

This month I interviewed Ca-R-Ma Cat Rescue, this is what they had to say:

This one was adopted by CHSR's Marketing CoordinatorCan you tell us about the mission of your organization?

Cat Rescue Maritimes, known as CA-R-MA, is an all-volunteer registered charity with chapters in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Our mission is to bring community cat populations into balance through trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs, to improve the lives of unowned, free-roaming cats, to support long-term cat population solutions in communities; and to advocate compassionate care of free-roaming and feral cats.

What got you/your organization started on your mission?

Trap-neuter-return programs are widespread in Europe, but a fairly recent innovation in
North America. TNR has proven to be the most effective and humane approach to cat
population control. The animals live out their natural lives, sheltered and fed, but are unable to reproduce. Over time, feral colonies disappear.

Cat Rescue Maritimes began in the Sackville area in 2005 in response to concerns about the welfare of a growing population of unowned, free-roaming cats in the community. There are now 10 community-based chapters working in New Brunsiwick and Nova Scotia and another five Maritime communities actively interested in joining the CA-R-MA program.

What is it about Fredericton and the surrounding area that makes your mission so important?

Since the Fredericton chapter began its trap-neuter-return program in 2007, we have
sponsored spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines (including rabies) and medical care to more than 3,300 feral and abandoned/free-roaming cats, living on over 200 different sites in the Greater Fredericton area. In 2012 alone, we did 698 cats. Following surgery, most of the CA-R-MA cats are returned to their sites where a caregiver ensures food and shelter for the animals and monitors the colony.

Cat colonies often begin with an abandoned, unaltered pet left at the end of a driveway or
near a barn in outlying, rural areas. Fredericton is a typical Maritime community, surrounded by largely rural territory. Cats congregate wherever they can a find food (often provided by a kind-hearted individual or neighborhood) and some kind of shelter (a shed or barn, an abandoned house or car) . Kittens born in these circumstances will be feral animals and will within their first year of life begin producing their own litters. The population grows exponentially and the kind souls trying to help these cats become overwhelmed.

Do you have any big events coming up?

We depend entirely on donations and fundraisers, and work constantly to raise a minimum of $75,000 each year. Two major events are planned for the spring. On April 12, we are sponsoring a dance featuring DJ music from the 70s-90s. On May 11, we join four other humane groups in a Burlesque Show at Centre Communitaire Ste-Anne. For information, email suemadigan@gmail.com.

What do you hope to see for your organization in the coming year?

Trap-neuter-return is generally impossible during the winter months, as cats need special
care and warmth following surgery. We begin the 2013 TNR season with a plan to finish off colonies where we are already working and to deal with sites we did not get to in 2012. We aim to do 350 cats through individual appointments at veterinary hospitals and hope to hold some large-scale clinics for 75 or more animals later on.

The cat population problem is severe and takes time and money to address. But year by year, CA-R-MA reducing the population and the suffering.

Below are some of the cats you can adopt from CA-R-MA!

CHSR Mini Review – Heat and Lights

Posted on 2013-04-14 by Tim Rayne Posted in Music Reviews, Reviews

Heat and Lights – Demo

The re-release of the Demo/EP from Heat and Lights was just put up on bandcamp. The collection of songs showcases the strengths of Heat and Lights; reflective folk rock. The acoustic pop sensibilities of the band compliment lead singer Tim Walker’s maturation as lyricist who try’s to wrap his head around daily grind, ageing, and family life. Walker’s sensitive lyrical nuances are well suited for his smooth vocal style that allows him to have more expressive freedom when compared to the more pop sensibilities found in his other group Grand Theft Bus. One of Tim’s strengths as a singer/songwriter is how he uses his voice as an additional instrument that flows with the melody. The songs are beautifully written and avoid the fine line of being too precious.

http://heatandlights.bandcamp.com/album/demos

The song News Comes On is a haunting trackabout alienation and loneliness that fits nicely with the finger picking accompaniment that keeps the song from falling into melancholy. The catchy, some what upbeat, tempo of With a Ghost is a soul searching track that asks questions rather than an attempt to provide answers. Why, Why, Why is subversively beautiful in its musical arrangement when one connects the tragic, brutal reality of an abusive relationship in its lyrical themes from a perspective of a voyeur. The final track Holiday is really about spacing out and a need for escapism that we all need at times to make it through the day. Heat and Lights is an appropriate name for this band. The songs are reflective, personal narratives that capture the fleeting thoughts and experiences of someone experiencing a young family life – beautiful indeed. This is just a taste of what is yet to come. Highly Recommended.

Greetings! from Gumdrop Mountain: A Review

Posted on 2013-04-13 by katrina Posted in A Month of Saturdays

I haven’t had all that much spare time this semester, but when I did, I would be reading. I’ve recently fallen in love with the short story style of writing. Two authors I’ve read this semester were Rob Grey, one of the professors here on campus who wrote Crisp (wonderfully written short stories), and Jordan Stewart, a local Saint John writer who wrote a collection of surreal, provocative short stories called Greetings! from Gumdrop Mountain.

I had received the book as a Valentine’s Day gift, and it made my heart sing. That is one gift I will always respond well to: books. It was purchased at Scheherazade Books & Music in Saint John (apparently, this book is difficult to locate in stores). Excited, I began reading the short stories right away — and burned through the collection at a pace that even I was surprised with.

Stewart has a very interesting voice, unlike anything I had read before. His short stories (and they were all very short) seemed to have a poetic element to them, which I found very intriguing. Each story was different and unique, and the voice slightly different as well, staying only similar enough to know that each story (if you didn’t have an author’s name) was written by the same author. The photo to the left is the colour-version of the photo in the book, the note ending, “This one time, he went camping and almost got stepped on by a moose”. Absolutely comedic – like his stories.

My favourite stories in the collection are “A Month of Saturdays” (where the name of this column comes from!), “She is 9/11” (a story about a man following a woman through the grocery store), and “Eric, Who is a Robot” (a story about an incoming apocalypse, focused on a young man and his robot friend). For a story about the end of the world, it ends on such a beautiful image, one that I won’t reveal for any of those who are interested in purchasing it.

Here’s the link to the publisher’s website, where you can purchase the book and can’t find it in stores. The review provided on the site gives some good ideas as to what the stories are. Somewhat vulgar and sharp, definitely not a children’s book despite the “cutesey” title of the collection. The stories are definitely very adult — probably not good bedtime stories for your young’uns. A quote of the review pulled from the website says, “If you’re on the lookout for a small, hilarious, irreverent and often surreal collection of short stories, Saint John’s Jordan Stewart has a book worth your notice”.

For anyone who is looking for an intriguing read, I will now always recommend this book.

Diversions is April’s Show of the Month!

Posted on 2013-04-08 by Nuchtchas Posted in Diversions, Show of the Month

DiversionsWhat made you start your show?

I started the show 23 years ago when a friend who volunteered for CHSR back in 1990 talked about a possible opening for a classical music show – knowing my passion for classical music, he talked me into meeting the then program director (Steve Staples) and I did a sound test.  Training followed and I was on air within a week.  The rest is history – I’ve hosted the show for 20 of the last 23 years (I was away in Scotland for 15 months and Montreal for 2 years and they kept ‘Diversions’ going through those hiatuses).  I understand ‘Diversions’ is the longest running show in the current CHSR schedule, and almost the longest running show CHSR has ever broadcast (I think ‘Crazy Train’ and ‘Lunch Box’ are longer running, but would need to check that).  In the early days  I got involved in news reading, and also did some spoken work documentaries ( ‘Stonewall Remembered’ was put together in 1989, and ‘Babi Yar’ won a special Barry Award in 1991) – then for 7 years presented a weekly gay and lesbian show ‘Fruit Cocktail’ (considered pretty radical in the early 1990s – it won three Barry’s during its run until 1997).

Tell us a little about your hosts?

Brief biog. – Born in a small town (Preston) in NW England, I was drawn into classical music early through the interests of a school music teacher and choir master, then through a performing music society run by the firm my father worked for as a photographer.  (My family – of fairly humble roots – are not particularly musical.)  Dad would photograph visiting artists and I would help as an assistant and get to see the shows for free behind the scenes.  My high school (a Jesuit college) also encouraged music appreciation and organized visits to concerts.  By the time I went to university I was hooked.  I was also fortunate in doing graduate studies in Glasgow – the cultural hub of Scotland – with a very active concert scene.  I enjoy many different types of music, but classical music has an especially profound emotional connection.  Aside from violin lessons in my early teens, and some elementary music theory classes, and membership of a choir until my voice broke – I would not describe myself as musically talented at all or involved in music making.

Who would be your dream guest on your show?

Dream guest?  “Diversions’ has never had guests, but  I have often thought of having a guest to chose the music and interview then in between items.  I suppose Measha Brueggergosman would be someone who would approach the ideal – a local singer who has really hit the big time.  I think if the ‘guest format’ was developed at all, it should become a show-case for local classical music talent – professional and amateur – and a place where other local community members who share my own passion.

What made you decide to come to CHSR to air your show?

Cannot think of one particular reason other than it seemed like a good idea at the time – then I got hooked on the whole idea of community radio (members of the community sharing their passion with others).  My own upbringing and education happened at a time when ‘culture’ was considered something anyone could appreciated – not just in music, but drama, theatre, literature, dance – Britain in the 1950s was a place where egalitarian ideals were widespread.  The same ideal underpinned higher education – before the Thatcherite counter-revolution decided such thing should be rationed by wealth.  Funnily enough, coming to Canada in 1988 I discovered Clyde Gilmour (“Gilmour’s Albums” on CBC Radio) who presented his classical music passion for a general audience without any sense of condescension (such as ‘This is Culture’ and should be listened to on you knees).  His program has had a profound influence on how I put together ‘Diversions’.  I also see classical music as something living, rather than an 18th and 19th century relic.  ‘Diversions’ has always included a high proportion of contemporary (and Canadian) classical music – discovering Canadian classical music has been one of the great pleasures of presenting ‘Diversions’ over the years – this country has a rich tradition going back into the late 1700s.

Where do you see the show going in the future?

The show has evolved considerably over 23 years, with the biggest change happening in 2000 when I introduced the ‘Summer Festival of Opera’ – complete operas every Sunday from Canada Day to Labour Day.  The idea of having guests chose the music and do interviews for a particular show is an idea I have toyed with for a couple of years, and that would be the next innovation  would like to take on.  Otherwise, ‘Diversions’, judging by audience feedback, seems to have formula that works.  I remain open to suggestions as well.

“Diversions” – enlightening opera and classical performances, Sundays 4pm-6pm.

Flat Earth Society Open Mic

Posted on 2013-04-06 by katrina Posted in A Month of Saturdays, Events

My previous article covered the wonderful Slam Poetry at the Cellar, and following up on that routine, I went to the Open Mic Night at the Windsor Castle Bar (AKA, the Grad House) here on campus. The Open Mic, every Tuesday, begins around 7:30pm with signups at 7, and is welcome to all grad students and undergraduates. Undergraduates may have to pay a fee, however, this was unclear and because of the small crowd, I wasn’t required to pay.

It was a very lovely building, and I’m always impressed when I’m introduced to a building on Campus that I haven’t been to before. The Grad House felt like a homely, quaint (in a very good way) little cottage, which included a small bar and some small round tables. It was a warm atmosphere both outside and in, despite the horrible spring-time winds outside. (Does it feel like Spring to anyone else, because I don’t see it yet.)

The crowd was somewhat small and intimate, including a few good friends and some accompanying grad students. Thankfully the small crowd was slightly more comforting after having decided to read one of my own poems last-minute. There were only a few of us who read, including myself, my good friend Ben Dugdale, and the creator of the open mic, Weston. All of the poets were impressive, having read some original works and poems by Elizabeth Austen and Mary Oliver.

For anyone interested in reading or listening, I would definitely recommend this event, or others on campus like it (as there are plenty). Readers are welcome to do poetry, prose, as well as acoustic performances. When I asked Weston for a statement about the event, he said he is hoping for a few more participants and listeners, but the small crowd hasn’t seemed to have diminished his spirit, and he was incredibly upbeat and excited for the event anyhow. If anyone’s interested in reading something they’ve written or enjoy, the Open Mic at the Grad House could be a fun, no-pressure event to become involved in. The Grad House is located just behind the campus Bookstore.
