Music Mini Review: Karver Hitchcock – The Fading Glow

Posted on 2013-04-03 by Tim Rayne Posted in Music Reviews, Reviews

Music Mini Review

Karver Hitchcock – The Fading Glow

One of my biggest resources for finding local music talent is on bandcamp. When I have time, I tag ‘Fredericton’ on bandcamp and discover music for my Instant Breakfast and East Coast Stream shows on CHSR. Most of the time I have no idea who these people are, nor do I know anything about them other than their obvious passion for music. I like it that way. I have no preconceived notions or judgements of these people. I just respect the fact that they make music and share it with the masses. I am not scenester, hipster, or elitist – I just love music.

This is not the first time that I have heard Karver Hitchcock’s music. In fact, I have played music off his previous releases on my show that I also discovered on bandcamp. There is an obvious deep Floyd connection to the musical style and that is not a bad thing. He has a mellower vibe and his music is void of pretension. Hitchcock does all the instrumentation on the recording and is able to pull off a singular musical vision that compliments the deceivingly simple arrangements. The Fading Glow is the title of the release, which is an apply named considering its transient nature – the songs are short fleeting moments of time and space. With that being said, there is still a strong pop sensibility to the recordings that are catching and hooky. Recommended.

CFN 2013-03-30 coverartThere aren’t a lot of things that last for 52 years. Heck, it becomes a little questionable for people to exist that long.

CHSR has done it, however. They’ve been a campus-based community station for 52 years. It’s a pretty amazing accomplishment, and has been a passion of my life for at least the last 15.

If you can, why not support CHSR during it’s Fundrive. Without it, this show would not exist, and “the Encaffeinated ONE” wouldn’t likely exist either.

Thanks, most sincerely, for your support.

FunDrive Concert At the Wilsler’s Room

Posted on 2013-03-28 by Nuchtchas Posted in Events, fundrive

FunDriveWilslers20Saturday we had an event to raise money for CHSR’s FunDrive at the Wilsler’s room.  That’s a nice spot in the Capital Complex.  It’s a cozy room with really nice acoustics, decent bar prices, and a nice layout for performers and spectators.  I think the only odd part is that the entrance is on the side of the stage, but that became a source for fun.

Wilsers QRScheduled to play were Logan Colter, Brydon Crain, and Josh Bravener, but we had a fun change in plans as the first act was Logan Colter who was joined by 2 members of The Creaks. Second was Brydon Crain, then Kurtis Eugene popped on stage for 2 songs, and Josh Bravener was last.

It was a lot of fun, good music, and CHSR did well in fundraising.  Thank you everyone who came out, everyone who volunteered, and to all of the musicians that donated their performance, you guys rock.

CHSR Evil Dead Marathon – mini review

Posted on 2013-03-27 by Tim Rayne Posted in Film Reviews, fundrive

CHSR evil dead final

Under the Radar Films – Evil Dead Trilogy (Sam Rami)

When I was a child growing up in the 80s and early 90s, horror films were what brought my family unit together (except Dad who hated them). A confusing time indeed, both my grandmother and mother were obsessed with slasher films and horror films in general. Most kids were watching Flight of the Navigator or some Disney shlock. For me, it was Sleep Away Camp, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Hellraisers….everything from bad to worse. At the time I was terrified with my active imagination. I remember watching the first Nightmares on Elm Street and I couldn’t sleep for a week…I even started thinking my poor old grandfather could be Freddy. I would pray to God in bed, begging him to let me sleep, promising that I would never watch another. The next weekend, I would run down to the video store and rent another.

When you think about it, the slasher films from the 80s could have easily been produced by Barbra Bush for propaganda purposes. For example, any teenagers having sex would be killed first by decapitated, the poor stoner kid smoking a bag of rag weed gets it next, and anyone who went against the police or authority would be sliced and diced. As a tween, this scared the living shit out of me way more than any after school special bullshit. My mom would rent them with us every weekend. I am not sure what was stranger, the fact my mom rented these films and loved the killing or the fact she would make my brother and I turn our heads away at the sex scenes (at that age, preinternet, I suffered through violence in the hope to see any sex act or nudity). Because, at least for me, the violence was less interesting than dope smoking sex acts. However, I still have a morbid fascination with horror films but I notice, even as an adult, I wonder if I should cover my eyes at any sign of a breast. Most of the slasher films fit this formula to a tee but there were some subversive and innovative approaches to the genre. By flipping it upside down, Sam Rami has created a series that has stayed the test of time and have become undeniable horror movie classics.

The Evil Dead films brought a freshness to the horror genre. Some filmmakers, like Sam Rami, have the ability to thrive on creativity in making low budget films. Rami went so far as to create his own zoom/fast cut/tight shot style that has since been mimicked and appropriated by other famous directors like Guy Richie. All formulaic approaches were literally tossed out into the WOODS. Each film progressed in vision and many fans will argue which film is the best. But for me, all three films are one in the same. It’s the telling that varies, the bits and moments of shock and awe with outrageous humour. Similar to Sergio Leoni’s Fist Full of Dollars Trilogy or Robert Rodriguez’ Mariachi Trilogy…the story comes second to the world the filmmakers create…pure fantasy. Super violent, highly stylized, dark skit comedy. It’s a roller coaster ride of thrills and chills; and just like a great roller coaster ride, it begins fast, gets out of control, and then its over just as fast as it begun. The Evil Dead films, including Army of Darkness, wore their B movie charm on their sleeve but I would argue that all three of those films have become masterpieces in DIY filmmaking. Made with heart, innovation, and talent.

RADIO STATION BRINGS A WHOLE NEW GAME

BYLINE
You might accuse Tim Rayne of having prescient abilities.

The station manager at CHSR 97.9 FM has spent the last 48 months working behind the scenes to forge a new direction for the campus radio station. Now, at a time when Fredericton’s airwaves need a strong, alternative sound more than ever before, Rayne is poised to deliver just that.

“I hesitate to call it ‘the new CHSR,’ but it kind of is, because we’re bringing a whole new game to it,” Rayne said.

The station begins its annual Fundrive this week and is using the occasion to highlight a number of changes designed to bolster its presence and involvement in the community.

The station recently had a new transmitter installed that provides a signal comparable in strength and clarity to commercial outlets, broadened programming in broadcast and online formats, and is in the midst of building better relationships with the non-profit and arts communities in Fredericton.

Rayne took over the operation in February 2011, a time when CHSR was plagued by infighting and showing some of the lowest numbers in its 52-year history. A Fredericton native who grew up listening to the station, Rayne wanted to bring the organization back to its community-centric roots.

He drew from his connections as a well-known filmmaker in the province to recruit a broad range of local professionals to fill out the station’s board, executive and volunteer pool. Then he and colleagues cooked up new shows, spanning music formats, talk and interview shows, programs with an arts bend – basically any idea someone wanted to run with.

He said the key has been a slow burn approach, taking time to build relationships and test new shows to ensure the vision would work.

And has it ever.

“When I first came on, we were looking at 100 hits a day for the whole station,” Rayne said. “Now, we get 1,000 from just one show. Our listenership on the website went up 500 per cent over the last year, for a fact. It’s insane.

“You end up putting yourself on Reddit, using grassroots marketing, and you start to promote yourself in ways that, really, the corporations can’t.”

Rayne said three new shows launched in 2012 have really driven the results: his own Instant Breakfast (a morning show playing East Coast bands and lots of Freddy acts), The Lunch Box (a noon-hour interview/information-style show) and Erin Bondo’s Homemade Jams (an evening show featuring acts from Atlantic Canada).

The coming months will see more new shows added to the mix, including an hour-long program hosted by the Feels Good Community, and an online feature, Spoken Word Corner, for poets to record audio tracks of their prose.

The station’s next focus is attracting more public service announcements from non-profits and traditional on-air ads from local businesses. To bolster their physical presence, Rayne said they’re also looking at setting up mobile units so they can broadcast live from community events or music festivals happening in the area.

CHSR FunDrive

If you haven’t heard or visited UNB’s CHSR 97.9 FM radio station, you are missing out on a good time.

As you take the first step through CHSR’s doors, something about the floor-to-ceiling poster-covered walls and overflowing CD racks tells you you’re with friends and in for a good time.

For those who might be timid about walking straight into a radio station, but would still really like to get involved, fear not, for this week is CHSR’s FunDrive! What is a FunDrive, you may ask? Well, it is a mash-up of a few different events happening through March 22-30.

There are a wide range of events including, a hot dog BBQ on The Cellar patio, which took place last Friday, and performance by Logan Colter, Brydon Crain and Josh Bravener at the Wilser’s Room last Saturday. Events coming up include, Evil Dead Trilogy Marathon to be held at Tilley Hall on Thursday, March 28, starting at 8 p.m. with movie durations of only about one hour and 15 minutes each. There will be a minimum $3 donation for this event. Also, there will be a Table Top Board Game Night at the UNB Student Union Building’s blue room on March 30, with a minimum donation of $2.

With so many different events, you can be sure to find something that suits you!

CHSR is a non-profit radio station, and the annual FunDrive is a great source of new income. All proceeds go back into the station, which help them upgrade to better equipment, expand their music library, fund workshops, employ staff, send volunteers to conferences outside of Fredericton, and much, much more.

“It’s the members’ radio station”, said station manager, Tim Rayne. “It’s run by the campus community”.

The best thing about CSHR and its FunDrive is the fact that it is not faculty specific. Just because you’re not majoring in media or broadcast journalism, doesn’t mean you can’t join in on the fun. The station is always looking for new volunteers with all types of experience.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re in nursing, business, media, or computer science, It’s open ended to the options that you can do in terms of creating a resume and helping the station, while helping yourself”, said Rayne. “I see CHSR as an opportunity to have training and development programs and workshops that allow students to take their academic experiences and put them into the work place.”

If you still aren’t convinced by the work experience, cool wall art, or Evil Dead trilogies, then the easy going, friendly nature that is Tim Rayne, will be sure to push you over the edge.

Drop by one of the FunDrive events or pop into the station to meet with great people like Tim and get involved with campus’ very own radio station, CHSR 97.9 FM. They are truly for the people, by the people, and we just happen to be those people.

If you can’t make it to the events but would still like to make a donation to help out our local radio station, CHSR has got you covered there too. You can go to their website (Chsrfm.ca) and donate through PayPal or other forms of online payment.
