CAFFEEN! playlist for 2013-06-01: “Peaceful Beach Of Ice”

CFN 2013-06-01 coverartWith the temperatures suddenly jumping 20 degrees, and the humidity becoming a huge factor, it’s time to practice a little mind over matter. We imagine ourselves on a plateau of snow and frozen water, in the midst of the Southernmost continent, the polar opposite of our predicament. Perhaps there, we can finally cool off!

Ultra Ska Robot Attack is the Show of the Month – June

Posted on 2013-06-01 by Nuchtchas Posted in Show of the Month

1USRA) What made you start your show?

The Ultra Ska Robot Attack started up a few years ago (2010) with founding members Ben and Rhys. It presumably came from a deep unsatisfied need for Ben and Rhys to share their hooliganism on the air waves, also ska. The show is currently co-hosted by Ben, Ky, and Simon (aka Checkers the horse).

2) Tell us a little about your yourself?

We’re all undergrads (or in the case of Rhys, was) at UNB studying physics, and have been doing so for about 4 years. That might seem oddly specific, but it’s pretty important considering that’s how we all met. At first it was a bit frustrating trying be a lab partner with a horse (a lack of opposable thumbs really makes calibrating instruments difficult), but we eventually overcame that obstacle and became great friends.

Hosts: Ben (back), Simon (right), & Ky (front).

Hosts: Ben (back), Simon (right), & Ky (front).

3) Who would be your dream guest on your show?

Before Simon and Ky started co-hosting the show Ben and Rhys had already interviewed The Planet Smashers, an amazing Canadian ska band; that guest would be pretty hard to top. As far as Canadian bands go Rude City Riot is one of our favorites, and it would be super rad if they came on the show. Going international, the craziest guest we’d love to have on the show would probably be Leningrad. They’re a Russian band that is supposedly so vulgar that the mayor of Moscow has banned them from playing at any large events within the city.

4) What made you decide to come to CHSR to air your show?

We’re all students at UNB so it made sense for us to use such great resource located conveniently on campus. Besides that, CHSR is the most open and diverse media outlet in town. Who else would let 3 twenty-something guys with no previous experience talk about, and play some ska for an hour every Monday night?

5) Where do you see the show going in the future?

All of us current members are graduating next year (fingers crossed), and we will be going our separate ways all over the world. We don’t have any direct succession planned locally, but we are exploring ways of syndicating the show to keep our content flowing. Until then we want to finish our stay in Fredericton with style, hopefully by sprucing up the ska scene in town!

Tune in while you can to Ultra Ska Robot Attack Monday nights at 10pm!

This Ship – All the Stars and Elements- Review!

Posted on 2013-05-31 by Brad Schofield Posted in Maritime Vinyl, Music Reviews

The debut LP titled All the Stars and Elements from Halifax indie pop-rock band This Ship just hit the online world on May 22nd. It has five long numbers filled with chilling harmonies, complex drumming, artsy guitar and pretty much any other instrument they could get their hands on. Hell, they even use their hands with steady, fun clapping that’s sure to be an audience favourite at their live shows.

The band consists of Bethany Fulde on vocals and guitar; Justin MacPherson Wiles on vocals, keyboards and keytar; Jordan Stephens on vocals and bass; and Adam Martin on vocals and drums. Their influences include The Beatles, Wintersleep and Arcade Fire, yet they sound completely original. All the songs are clocking in at well over five minutes apiece (two are over seven), which usually makes me nervous as long songs tend to be filled with repetition (heres looking at you Don McLean) or ridiculous showboat soloing. However, This Ship keeps me interested. It’s almost as if they use a progressive rock formula of multiple instrument and vocal layers, yet they do it all with a fun indie pop-rock sound.

Just being a band for a little over a year, This Ship has been keeping a steady flow of shows under their belts finishing two Ontario and Quebec tours in 2012. Their calendar is quickly filling with gigs this summer as well to support the release of All the Stars and Elements including a show in Fredericton at the Gallery Connexion on Saturday June 1st. As an added bonus, they are stopping in Quebec at the end of their tour to record a new three song EP, really keeping the momentum rolling. I’ll be sure to keep my eyes open for this release.

The band is scheduled to appear on the June 3rd episode of Homemade Jams on 97.9 CHSR FM. Host Bondo always proves to have thorough and entertaining interviews so it will be a great opportunity to get acquainted with This Ship.

You can download All the Stars and Elements on their Bandcamp page here, and pay by donation. I’m not sure if there will be a physical CD or vinyl release for this album, but here’s hoping!

Mini Music Review

Mini Music Review

Stephen Lewis & The Big Man of One – Peanut Butter jams

I always like the idea of having a summer album. A record that deserves to be played on those beautiful summer days with friends and family drinking beers and BBQing on the deck. Stephen Lewis new album may just be that album! 2013 is proving to be a record year for highly anticipated albums from the Fredericton music scene and the Big Band of One is the leading the charge. Solid production, catchy songwriting, and innovative musicianship make for a great listening experience. Positive vibes abound on Stephen Lewis debut record Peanut Butter and Jam. Reminds me of early Barenaked Ladies when they had a sense of humour and wrote hilariously catchy pop songs.

Since this is Stephen Lewis’s debut full length release, The Big Band of One has made a name for himself as a great LIVE entertainer. Can he pull of a studio recording and capture the magic of his LIVE show performances? For starters, this is well produced studio album, although sometimes too clean for my personal taste. The studio production does compliment Lewis’ high energy party jams. The summery strumming style that make up the catchy hooks are mostly in the fore while Lewis brings in an eclectic range of pop fusion – everything from oldschool beatboxing to trippy psychedelic jam tangents with moments of reggae stylings. Peanut Butter and Jams captures the sunny disposition of Stephen Lewis’ party music. Summer 2013 is looking like one for the record books.

Personally, my favourite moments are when Stehphen reaches for the psychedelic stars. Check out You Say Hey at the 3:45 mark.

Support Local Talent,

Tim Rayne
