Getting the word out about FunDrive at the Market

Posted on 2013-03-25 by Nuchtchas Posted in fundrive

FunDriveMarket2Not everyone in town knows that CHSR is holding our FunDrive right now, heck, a lot of people in Fredericton don’t know we exist.  To remedy this some of our volunteers decided to go down to the Market on Saturday in bold costumes.

Adam, host of Fredericton This Week and The Cutting Room Floor had been working on his costume for a few weeks now, teasing and hinting at it to his twitter followers, calling it simply “The Attention Getter V3.3”.  It grabbed attention, he made a duct tape Bender costume.  Bender is a robot from the TV Series Futurama.

Another member (@the_clock_doc) who works in our Tech department came as his original character The Clockwork Doctor; a Venetian Plague Doctor.  You may have seen this get up before at the Fredericton Zombie walk, and will see it again at CHSR’s Evil Dead Movie Marathon.

We met a lot of people, told them about the various events we have on the go, and handed out flyers.  We were not collecting any money since we were not Market vendors, we just wanted to get the word out.  Did you see us there?  Did you get your picture taken with any of the costumes?  Share your photos!

FunDrive Hot Dog BBQ

Posted on 2013-03-24 by Nuchtchas Posted in Events, fundrive

FunDriveBBQ01Friday we had a Hot Dog BBQ to celebrate and raise funds for FunDrive.  It was the first event of our 2013 FunDrive and it was a success.  The weatherman had predicted good weather and yet because this is Fredericton, the weather turned.  Friday morning we woke to flurries and snow still on the ground.  But we are Canadians so we shoveled off the Cellar Patio and set up the grill!

BBQ QRBondo was the organizer (and shoveler, she gets extra credit for that) of this event and deserves a lot of credit for how it turned out.  CHSR members came to help out, say hi, or get a hot dog over the three hours we were set up.  More so, many people on campus stopped by for a bite and filled our jar quite nicely.  We had chicken hot dogs, vegan hot dogs (which made two people very happy) and cupcakes.  Everyone had a good time and it was the first success we needed to push us on for the coming events to come over FunDrive.

Slam Poetry at the Cellar

Posted on 2013-03-23 by katrina Posted in A Month of Saturdays, Events

image337-1I had never been to The Cellar, the pub on the UNB Fredericton campus, before Tuesday night. In fact, until recently, I didn’t know there was even a bar in the Student Union Building. However, upon discovering that there was going to be a Poetry Slam Competition, I decided that it may be a place I should check out. Although I was somewhat unimpressed with the venue (simply because bars and pubs aren’t usually my favourite places to be), it was still a fairly cozy place despite the noise and the alcohol going around. The atmosphere was good and the servers were friendly. I arrived early with a friend and waited until the start of the show.

image_1363926145862797The poetry slam was sponsored by STUART and The Cellar, and was judged by Paddy O’Reilly (last semester’s Slam winner), Emily Bosse (a UNB grad student), and one randomly chosen judge. Although I don’t remember the names of all of the competing poets, I was incredibly impressed with the display of talent from everyone who competed. In the first round, all competitors read one poem and were then judged and half of which were eliminated. Those who weren’t continued to the second round, read another poem, and won a copy of STUART, STU’s student arts publication. From there, two final competitors were chosen and were given 15 minutes to write a final poem on two randomly chosen phrases: restraining devices and supplements. The winner of the competition was Kirk Girouard, winning a prize of $100.

STU LogoThose I do remember where Jeremy Fowler, who did a poem from memory while Kirk held the microphone, and Cody Jack who wrote a love poem about his beard (wonderful). After the show, they held an open mic for anyone who wanted to read, where a few of the competitors read another poem, and a man named Weston advertised the Open Mic every Tuesday night at the Grad House. Maybe I should have read something, but with my on-stage jitters, I had decided against it.

After the show, I asked one of the round two finalists, Ben Dugdale, what he thought of the show, and he seemed impressed. “It was definitely a good time,” he said, “More solid poets performing, and a little bit of a rowdier crowd. I can’t wait to see how it grows in the future.”

Overall, it was a fantastic night and I was thoroughly impressed by everyone who competed or read for fun in the open mic afterwards. I’ll have to attend more of these in the future (although I wonder if the slam would have been different on a Friday night… considering it was in a pub?). Congratulations to all of the competitors and the winner, Kirk. My sincerest apologies if I’ve spelled someone’s name wrong – please let me know and I’ll be sure to edit them!

Dine Around Freddy 2013 – Brewbakers

Posted on 2013-03-22 by S.L. Sirois Posted in Events, Food Guide, Specialty

Brewbakers_allIt’s time to talk to you about Dine Around Freddy.

Are you prepared to throw away all your money, gain at least ten pounds even with hardcore exercise routines, and sob your way through all the paltry meals you make in comparison?

Okay, maybe that is stretching it a little, but seriously. FOOD GET IN MY BELLY!

For those not aware, Dine Around Freddy is an annual winter event in the capital that is taken pretty seriously, especially by the locals.

[mantra-pullquote align=”center” textalign=”center” width=”90%”]”If you’re a real tourist, you understand that tourist attractions are rarely visited by the inhabitants of the city itself.”[/mantra-pullquote]

However, with a tight knit city like Fredericton, it manages to be different. All the owners, managers and workers tend to know each other in the city, and the local cuisine manages to get plenty of promotion from anyone and everyone who likes to eat out. (So, everyone, because we’re all too lazy to make our own food.)

Dine Around Freddy 2013 is running from March 14th to March 30th, with ten restaurants participating. They (the restaurants) offer three course meals (including appetizer, entree and dessert) at a low price of $29 per person (with $1 being donated to the Canadian Diabetes Association per plate) not including drinks (Hey, I was going to say that!).

The restaurants participating this year are; The Blue Door, Brewbakers, Caribbean Flavas, [catch] URBAN GRILL, Chez Riz, Crepe Suzette, Terrace Dining Room, The Schnitzel Parlour, The Palate and Sam Sneads. (For a full list of menu items, click here.)

Lucky me, I had a chance to go to Brewbakers just last night, and test the waters, so to speak. I brought along a few friends (two other CHSR volunteers) for different taste bud opinions. Luckily that also meant we could share and try more of the food. (Go us!)

For appetizers, they gave us complimentary bread with hummus and butter, The appetizers were Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad, and Caramelized Onion Hummus. The salad had artisan greens in a shallot vinaigrette, with fresh strawberries, goats cheese, cucumbers and a balsamic drizzle, pictured below.

Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad

Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad

I tried the salad. The strawberries were delicious and perfectly ripe, the greens fresh, the cucumber went well with the ingredients, however I find it was a little plain, and felt like it was missing a flavor or texture.  My table buddy loved it.

The Caramelized Onion Hummus was served with warm pita and a sprinkle of feta, pictured below.

Caramelized Onion Hummus

Caramelized Onion Hummus

I’d have to say the hummus really blew me away. Normally, I only like hummus when it’s spicy, but this was delicious. My table buddy cleaned off the entire plate. I was honestly expecting her to lick the plate clean. I know I would have if the server hadn’t shown up so soon.

The clear winner of the Appetizer course was agreed unanimously to be the Caramelized Onion Hummus.

Next up, we had Entrees. I was looking forward to this, as I had ordered their Grilled Hanger Steak blue rare. It was served up with garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables (I couldn’t recognize anything other than a brussel sprout, my table buddy spotted knew more of the veggies) and finished with a peppercorn sauce.

Grilled Hanger Steak

Grilled Hanger Steak

Our server was wonderful in helping to select a wine that perfectly complimented the steak and brought out the great flavors in the meat. I enjoyed the taste experience very much. I messed up ordering this, I’m afraid. I wanted to try new things, but I’m not a big fan of peppercorn sauce, and the steak itself was a little hard on my teeth. I found that there seemed to be a problem with the vegetables, as well. It tasted, to be honest, like someone had accidentally used salt twice, instead of salt AND pepper. (I drained that water glass dry…and then some.)

The next entree was Truffle Chicken Linguini. It was covered with a rich and creamy garlic herb sauce, with sauteed mushrooms and onions with a hint of truffle.

Truffle Chicken Linguini

Truffle Chicken Linguini

Oh. My. Gosh. It was delicious. There wasn’t too much or not enough sauce, the chicken was perfectly done for the dish, the mushrooms practically burst in my mouth from flavor, and the noodles were perfect. I’m drooling just thinking about it.

The clear winner of the Entree course was the Truffle Chicken Linguini.

I should note as well, that the portions, although displayed in gourmet style, were more than adequate, and very filling. At this point, we weren’t sure if we could move from the table, but then again, we did have dessert to look forward too…

Speaking of, dessert choices were Citrus Creme Brule or Cookies and Cream.

I’ve personally never tried Creme Brule so I took a chance, and decided to get one. For those unaware, the way it was explained to me was that it’s custard in a dish with coarse sugar on top, with the sugar heated until it reaches hard candy consistency on the top, then paired off with decorations.

Citrus Creme Brule

Citrus Creme Brule

It. Was. delicious.

I was so glad I took a chance on it, because it was definitely worth it. Wow. Seriously, go order this, right now.

The second dessert, Cookies and Cream, was nutmeg cream sandwiched between a chocolate chip and a peanut butter cookie.

Cookies and Cream

Cookies and Cream

The clear winner here was the Citrus Creme Brule. As you can see in the picture, the peanut butter cookie was cooked almost to the point of being burnt. The other cookie was pretty dense, but the cream itself was great.

One important thing to note is that they had gluten free and vegetarian safe options as well.

The best part was when the bill came, and I realized I was stuffed but I hadn’t broken the bank.

Out of this experience, I’d give Brewbakers a 4.5 out of 5 for the entire experience. Go try it.

And if you do, try this amazing poutine of theirs, available on their regular menu.

Ultimate Poutine

Ultimate Poutine

My thanks to Tek, for his company, and Nutty, who provided me with pictures of the wonderful meal and funny stories (obviously in an attempt to make me spray wine from my nose when I laugh). If you think her pictures are good, you should go to her site. She is one talented lady.

STU Journalism Tuesdays!

Posted on 2013-03-22 by Nuchtchas Posted in Specialty, The Lunchbox

STU Logo1) Tell our readers a bit about this class?

It’s a third-year radio journalism class with an average of 20 students. I emphasize current affairs. In the fall-term, we learn how to tell stories with sound from the 60-second news story to soundscapes and short documentaries. In the second term, we put those skills in service of live radio on CHSR. Every student has to produce a Lunchbox show.

2) Tell our readers what is involved in this project, broadcasting on CHSR’s Lunchbox?

The students have to come up with a focused idea/subject they can sustain for half an hour. They’re put in groups of two, so they can cover the entire hour Lunchbox slot. As producers, the students are expected to do far more than just book an interview or two and play a tune. Usually there are several packaged items, including short (5 minute) documentaries. They need to script it, time it and then perform it. My hope is that students understand the care, hard work (and sometimes the bossiness) required to be a radio producer.

3) How many years has this been going on?

I’ve been teaching this class for five years and we’ve been doing the shows every year since.

 4) What has been the student response to these shows?

The students love the rush of doing live radio. Most want to do it again. But beyond that, the student producers are proud of the depth of their work. It’s practically like doing a half hour documentary.

5) What are some of the highlights of this year’s broadcasts?

I’d hate to single out any one show out, but we’ve had shows on everything from “The Internet and Over-sharing” to “The Employment Prospects of Generation Y” to “Concussions in Hockey.” We’ve had some great shows this year, with more to come before the term is up.

Fredericton TweetUp!

Posted on 2013-03-17 by Nuchtchas Posted in Events, Music Reviews
What happens at a Tweet Up

Last night quite a few CHSR members and myself went to the (@FredTweetUp) Fredericton TweetUp that was held at the (@FredFarmMarket) Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market.  What’s a tweetup you ask?  A tweetup is the actual face-to-face meeting of Twitter users. Tweetups are a chance for users to meet in real life and convert 140 character engagements or conversations into actual lengthy exchanges.

This was my second tweetup ever, both of which were in Fredericton, I read on twitter last night that this has been going on for three years running.  I had a blast and I think almost everyone that was there did too.  I’m relatively new to Fredericton, I’ve only been here since August 2011 so a lot of local things everyone knows about are new to me.

While I love the Market (both) and have been known to go once a month or so, I got to sample a lot of things that are staples of the market but I haven’t seen there yet.  Personally, the Market is a sensory overload for me, so many things to see and filled with so many people I can’t take my time to see it all.  I got to sample @Magzys smashed Lemon and Lime aid, which was so good, I lost count at how many I had, as a DD it was nice to have a treat. @TheHotLollies were handing out chocolate covered cheese cake, that was amazing. The Frosted Cupcake had small cupcakes which were very good, and I say that as a baker myself.  Family Favourites were the ones with the red pepper jam on gouda and raspberry jalapeno jam on brie, which were quite tasty.  The Bundles that were being passed around were amazing, they were offered by The Bundle Hut and I plan to return for more.  There were sausages that were being passed around by @ChickadeeLarder (mustard) & Hans the German (sausage) that my friends just loved, and the Nut Hut had these great candied nuts.

I’m told by others that the bar prices were more than decent.  There was extra food available for purchase, and drinks like soda.

There were some old favorites of mine being represented too, A Taste of Greek’s meat and yogurt sauce, the fish chowder being passed around by John Henry’s, it’s a blue food truck by temptation ally, I’ve bought it a time or two before.

Let’s talk about the band.  Pretty In Pink (@80sPrettyInPink) played the tweet up, and I had never heard them before.  They are amazing.  Pretty in Pink is an 80’s cover band, but they have the ability to perform Madonna, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, and Freddy Mercury without losing the tone of each song.  Throw in their songs from Rick Springfield, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Bon Jovi, and everything else they played, and still every song was dead on.  They had the spirit of the songs and the talent of every musician up there was impressive.  I’m a metal chick and I was dancing like a fool, tweeting and dancing that is.  I know that if I see Pretty in Pink listed as playing another event in Fredericton, I will be sure to go.

All in all it was a great night.  It was 300% better than my last tweetup which was still a 9/10.  Last night was fun because the location made it easy to mingle and walk around and the entertainment kept the energy level up.  Not to mention the samples going around, I know for sure I will be frequenting all of these vendors in the near future.  I can’t wait for the next tweetup!

UPDATE: According to @FredFarmMarket “Just In! We raised $855 for Women In Transition House at #fredtweetup. Thanks all for your contribution to this very important organization.”
