After living in Fredericton for two months, I haven’t been out too often. Despite the amount of free time I’ve had, my desire to face the bracing winds and drastically changing weather was essentially non-existent. However, on a milder day like today, I found my way downtown to Strange Adventures, the comic book store on York street.
There, I spoke with Jason Arnold, the manager about the upcoming events. The first, occurring now until March 2nd, they are holding an auction of statues, rare comic books, and hand-drawn covers by local artists both professional and amateur. Arranged by Marvel and DC, they send blank slips to the stores for artists to come in, draw, and auction off their pieces. The best part? 100% of the proceeds are going to the Chalmers Regional Hospital Foundation for the Children’s Ward. Jason said that that not only would people own a piece of completely original artwork, but hoped they would feel “warm and fuzzy” that the proceeds were going to a good cause.
I’m always impressed when stores do things like these, especially considering the fact that it was created by Marvel and DC themselves. With so many charities using the money to pay employees and pay for events, very little money winds up going to the charity itself. Jason’s excitement about the event was adamant, which gave for a great atmosphere in the store.
March 2nd, as well, is the third “Ladies Night” that they have hosted so far this year. Jason said that the first two even had lines down the street, and is hoping their third will have the same turnout. It’s from 6-8pm; there will be prizes, snacks, and free cupcakes. The goal of Ladies Night is to help open up women to the idea of comic books, and, Jason hopes, to sway any cautions that the stores are anything like their “narrow-minded” representation on shows like The Big Bang Theory. Only female employees will be staffed, and only female shoppers will be in the store during those hours.
It could be something interesting to check out — for the artwork, warm fuzzies, or simply for the free cupcakes.
With the whole crew back, the guys covered the results of the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view and some of their effects on Wrestlemania matches; a quick talk about Jack Swagger; and a quick run down of the main 2 fights for this weekend’s UFC 157.

CQ: Should we avoid tragedy and large impacting events at all costs, or should we accept the changing nature of the universe, and let some things be beyond our control?
Sadly, we bid goodbye to the voicemail this month. It wasn’t called in a while, and had really been just me calling it every month. I may get another one, but for now, we’ll rely on other methods (like email).

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover? Not in this case. As soon as I picked up the Beekeeper album I already knew it was going to be special. Beekeeper, a three-piece from Vancouver, have just released their third EP titled Shout At People and this may be the most unique thing I’ve heard in ages. You easily realize band member Brandi Sidoryk is a trained opera singer when you listen to the best opening ever for a CD, “Bees”. They can bring a sense of humour without being tacky and even include a kazoo on my favourite track Oh Hi!. My only complaint about this short EP is that I just wish it was longer. Barely hitting over the 10 minute mark it leaves you wanting more! So although they’re in no way a “new” band to the Canadian music scene they’re definitely a band to keep your eye on.

Tim Rayne’s Mini-Review: Shifty Bits – Shifty Bits Cult (EP)
This EP is a sampler, a taste and demonstration of range this collective brings to the fore. – an unapologetic assault of the senses. Believe me, you will thank them for it.
Last winter, the Shift Bits crew held a notable music festival at Gallery Connections in Fredericton. Unfortunately for me I was out of town, because the hype that followed from various friends who attended made it clear I missed one of the concert highlights of the year. I can’t attend too many live shows because of work and family commitments so I truly feel lucky when I get a chance to see a ‘Live’ band play live. I have only seen Motherhood and Maiden Names play live from this collective and both bands thrive on stage. In fact, Maiden Names’ show in particular is a must see. I heard the Maiden Names EP before I ever saw them on stage. I liked their sound of dirt rock/stoner metal fusion, but it wasn’t until I heard them live that I truly caught and appreciated their sound. They are now one of my favourite LIVE bands.
The Shifty Bits are a group of musicians who collaborate under the Shifty Bits Cult moniker. Motherhood, Waking Night, Maiden Names and Kurtis Eugene are the bands/artist that take part in this eclectic sampler EP set of diddies. The musicians are playful and experimental while remaining accessible and catchy – not as easy as it sounds. However, each band has their own distinguishable sound and inspiration. The 4 Song EP starts with my personal favourite track entitled Out to Long by Kurtis Eugene who incorporates a moody, slow burning blues sound that brings a psychedelic tinge when combined with his powerful vocals that could be compared to Jeff Buckley – if he smoked a bowl after coming back from the dead. The second track, White as Milk by Maiden Names is a great rock’n song that is up-tempo with a classic rock aesthetic in a low-fi recording. The song is great but I have a beef with the actual recording. The lo-fi element is part of the band’s charm and the band does not require a clean production to sound better, but I have yet to hear a recording that can exemplify or match the strength of their live sound. Don’t get me wrong, Maiden Names is one of my favourite local bands but I want to be able to show them to my friends on my home stereo. Motherhood’s song The News is layered with great harmonies and with some of their best production to date. This song showcases the bands campyness and even, in the last minute, what could be interpreted as a black metal homage. The final track on the EP is by Waking Night entitled Change, it has a country-rock-blues flavour with a little Jim James for good measure. Overall, solid EP from a collective that loves to be challenging while having fun making great music. A collective of true artists who underplay their artistic ambitions without losing face. This is a Sampler and it is just that, a sample. Check out more music from these guys from bandcamp; however, the REAL experience should be shared in a live setting.

Tim Rayne’s Mini Review: Tonella – Compromise (EP)
Tonella is a band that happens to be fronted by Tonella Roy. A Fredericton four piece rock outfit that mixes genres with a hard rocking foundation, catchy pop melodies, and soulful crooning. Backed by strong production, the Compromise EP easily shifts from intimate piano ballads to hard crunching rock hooks. The lyrics are reflective and at times remorseful; however, the juxtaposition of melancholy only heightens the explosive musical bursts of hope and optimism. The confidence and song-craft demonstrated on Compromise illustrates Tonella’s dynamic range. Opening track, Never Coming Back Again fully captures the band’s poppy orchestration, highlighting the EP’s strengths. The combination of female and male vocals elevates the song in both lyrical themes and music composition. The EP’s title track Compromise follows, possibly the strongest song on the album. Catchy? Hell yea…sticks with you long after you listen to it. Tonella Roy’s powerful voice steals the show, along with the great key/electronic hook. Foolish Heart is the ballad on the record and it carries with it a heavy weight of past memories and lost love. The next track, Tell Tale Lie, breaks away completely into a rocky, jazzy up tempo party jam reminiscent of playful Queens of the Stone Age riffage. The EP closes with The Separation, a therapeutic rocker that brings the record to its thematic conclusion of love and loss. Tonella proves that ROCK is still alive in the Maritimes. Check them out at http://tonella.bandcamp.com/album/compromise
