Yet another massive wave of new music hits our fences and we welcome it with open arms! Watch as I somehow have a change of heart and stop being a sarcastic asshole for once in my life to just be in a genuinely good mood.
Maybe this happens when I record in general? If only one could make a living doing this.
ANYWAY, bunch of awesome music and awesome bands that need love. So give it to them or else.
Or else what?
Exactly.

The Lunchbox on History: Leanna Thomas on Comparitive French Literature
It’s hard, sometimes, to see the impact our region has on the rest of the world — or how much in sync it is with what is happening half a world away.
My guest today is Leanna Thomas, a PhD student in UNB’s History department. After a few random encounters with literature in Florida, she’s found herself entering into a comparative analysis of francophone authors from across the world. Right now, she’s been comparing authors Raymond Guy Leblanc (Acadian) and Sonny Rupaire (Guadeloupean), as well as Antonine Maillet (Acadian) and Simone Schwarz-Bart (Guadeloupean), and finding some interesting parallels.
How much do you think you know about New Brunswick history? Personally, I think we do a pretty bad job of teaching it, and most people don’t embrace it. I’m on a mission to learn more, so I’ve invited a collection of historians to help me learn more about the legacies, the achievements, the battles, the inventions, the troublesome eras and the long past of one of Canada’s oldest regions.

The Lunchbox Interview: Lori Quick, Matt Maclean (Art Hive)
Art is so much more than something to be seen once its done; it can be something experienced from the inside, a deeper, richer thing because you created it, and it can come from you.
My guests today are Lori Quick (UNB Art Centre) and Matt Maclean (UNB Counselling Services) who have joined together with others to host a program called Art Hive. Art Hive provides a space, training and encouragement to students from any post-secondary school in the area, with the goal to provide free art instruction and experience in a safe space and help people with self-expression. The workshops in Art Hives help to cultivate the artist identity in each of us through every stage of life.
The first Art Hive event is on September 26 at 12:30, featuring the style of single-stroke painting called Enso Circles. This will be held at the ArtZone Studio in Memorial Hall, room 26. These workshops are free and all materials will be provided. They are open to all students in Fredericton from post-secondary institutions. No experience necessary.

The Lunchbox Interview: TROPOS by Deanna Musgrave & Andrew Reed Miller
“Art” is a small word with broad implications, and while we often find ways to split it down into more distinct subsections like “visual art” and “audio art”, sometimes they belong together more than they do apart.
My guests today are Deanna Musgrave and Andrew Reed Miller, who worked together on a multi-modal art and science project called TROPOS. This project has always lived in the intersection of visual, perceptual, auditory and experiential art, with an added dimension of observation for scientific study. Originally conceived as a piece that the observer moves through and interacts with spatially — as well as being, themselves, observed — the piece has had many lives, now being installed (with musical accompaniment) as a painting on UNB campus. Deanna and Andrew describe how this piece came to be, and how the intersections produce rich art.
TROPOS will be installed in the Richard J Currie Building at UNB Fredericton on September 22 at 2pm. Andrew will be conducting his piece of music to accompany the installation and performing on contrabass. He will be joined by Nadia Francavilla on violin; Robin Streb on viola; and Joël Cormier playing percussion.

The Lunchbox Interview: Chenise (Pi Alpha Gamma) & Kaley (Psi Lambda Phi)
University offers opportunities for students to bond with one enough, and forge friendships and supports that can last a lifetime. Sometimes, it begins with silly things…
My guests today are Chenise and Kaley, who each represent alumni from Greek organizations of the combined UNB/STU (and other post-secondary) institutions in Fredericton. Chenise represents Pi Alpha Gamma, a sorority, while Kaley represents Psi Lambda Phi, a fraternity. We talk about their motivations for having these Greek organizations, and the upcoming recruitment and fundraising drive — including the upcoming Pi a Pie with Psi Lambda Phi event!

The Lunchbox Interview: Justin Sappier and Tim Jones (Woodcarvers)
Artists often see the world not as it appears, but as it could be, and take note of the features that are waiting to be expressed.
My guests today are Justin Sappier and Tim Jones. Both of them have fallen in love with trees, finding sacred faces of tree spirits lying just below the surface of the wood. For the past couple of years, they have gone from complete novices to producing stunning pieces, through a combination of obsessive attention to care and a desire to push the shining quality of the finish to an astonishing level.
During the summer, the city of Fredericton is hosting numerous artists and crafters each week at the Odell Park Lodge, to practice their art for all to see. These artists come from a wide variety of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to basket-weaving and writing. From time to time, we’ll check in with these artists on the Lunchbox to find out what makes their art move them.

The Lunchbox Interview: Anne Stillwell (Block Print)
Some art is by its very nature, indirect, with the artist doing all the work before they know what the final product is going to look like.
My guest today is Anne Stillwell, who creates negative images with linoleum panels to later print them onto paper with ink. It’s clear that she has art in her very bones, but it took her some time to find exactly what art appealed to her the most.
During the summer, the Fredericton Arts Alliance brings a pair of artists together in the Barracks to practice their art for all to see. These artists come from a wide variety of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to basket-weaving and writing. As each pair of artists comes in, we’ll be talking to them on the Lunchbox.

The Lunchbox Interview: Matthew Dickson (Mind Aid)
The human condition is the same concern everywhere; but many places do not have the capacity to provide the support and therapy necessary. We need to help each other.
My guest today is Matthew Dickson. He is sharing the idea of Mind Aid, a program intended to bring awareness to a dramatic lack of mental health support and treatment opportunities in developing countries, as well as generate support for making change. Having lived with his own mental health challenges, he urges people to consider how they can make a change.
Matthew is giving a talk on Mind Aid, which not only covers the program itself but will have some advice for students also working through their own mental health problems. The talk will be on September 17 at 6:30pm at Room 303, Tilley Hall at UNB. The talk is free, but donations will be accepted to help support the program. Find out more about Mind Aid at their website.

The Lunchbox Interview: Katrina Slade (Abstract Artist)
If art in general is a conversation between the artist and the viewer, abstract art is a conversation where the artist has left out half the words, but is smiling intently at your response.
My guest today is Katrina Slade, an abstract artist whose art and education journey has taken her around the world. She came to discover Fredericton as the new home that was always there. She helps me understand abstract art, and talks about her process of creation.

The Lunchbox Interview: Vena Carr (Illustrator)
Illustration is often the ability to combine definite lines with indefinite colours to create scenes that never happened, but in the edge of your imagination, just might.
My guest today is Vena Carr, an illustrator who shares how her fun, whimsical images come from memories in the countryside, and how the layers of ink and watercolours combine together. She discusses her interest in illustrating children’s books, starting with one she wants to write herself.
