HitG 021: Alternatives to Pass/Fail

Posted on 2019-08-02 by encaf1 Posted in Head In The Game

In almost all roleplaying games, the outcomes of a character’s attempted actions are far from certain, and are usually determined by a roll of the dice — modified by a character’s own abilities, the situation, etc.

Most of the time, the resulting number is checked against some sort of target threshold, and if you beat the threshold, the action happens.

But what about more nuanced results? How do decide if it was an outstanding success, or a marginal failure? How to determine outcomes by degrees, rather than pass/fail?

The Lunchbox on History: Black History of NB

Posted on 2019-08-02 by encaf1 Posted in NB History, The Lunchbox

How much do you think you know about New Brunswick history? Personally, I think we do a pretty bad job of teaching it, and most people don’t embrace it. I’m on a mission to learn more, so I’ve invited a collection of historians to help me learn more about the legacies, the achievements, the battles, the inventions, the troublesome eras and the long past of one of Canada’s oldest regions.

My guests today are Mary Louise McCarthy and Jennifer Dow, to talk about Black History in the province. Both have a very personal connection to the legacy of black people in New Brunswick, from the early days of slavery to the support of the Loyalists to the affinity for indigenous peoples. We begin this discussion today with a bit from the earliest days.

The Lunchbox Interview: Jasmine Cull (Basketweaving)

Posted on 2019-07-30 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

It’s always astonishing to use a material like wood, through techniques and patterns not found in nature, to create forms and representations of nature itself.

During the summer, the Fredericton Arts Alliance brings a pair of artists together in the Barracks to practice their art for all to see. These artists come from a wide variety of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to basket-weaving and writing. As each pair of artists comes in, we’ll be talking to them on the Lunchbox.

My guest today is Jasmine Cull, an artist who practices basketweaving, albeit not always to make baskets. She was at the Barracks making sculptures using basketweaving techniques, and combining natural materials as raw materials in other art constructions. She describes the practice of carefully bending wood, as well as the importance to see, experience and practice other art techniques.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

I’m going to be honest with all of you: A lot of this week’s episode was just random stuff I was listening to over the past day or so. Is there really anything wrong with that? I don’t think so. Especially now that you’re listening to it, too.

So enjoy my playlist from yesterday, with about 23 extra hours omitted as I haven’t slept since Wednesday night. I need to go to bed. If it ever stops being hot.

PEACE.

The Lunchbox Interview: UNB Kids Songwriter’s Camp 2019

Posted on 2019-07-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Every generation is filled with stories, filled with their experiences — whether lived, loved, feared or witnessed.

My guests today are half of this year’s UNB Kids Songwriter’s Camp. These young creatives have spent the week combining their talents to write lyrics, create chords and learn to work together to perform entirely new songs. This year, they are led in part by alternative musician and lyricist Charles Harding, aka Property//.

The kids will be performing their songs at Marshall d’Avray Hall on July 28 at 10am-noon.

Property// will be performing with DenMother and JoJo Worthington on July 30 at 7:30pm at Grimross Brewing Company.

The Lunchbox Interview: Len Falkenstein, Hannah Blizzard, Greg Everett (NotaBle Acts)

Posted on 2019-07-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Anyone who thinks that theatre is limited to what’s on the stage needs to go see a) theatre that isn’t presented on a stage, and b) a lot more theatre presented on a stage…

My guests today are all involved in this year’s Notable Acts Theatre Festival. Len Falkenstein is responsible for a tremendous amount of theatre in this city, and is the founder and organizer of NotaBle Acts. Hannah Blizzard has acted in numerous productions, but is directing the one-act play With Love, Josephine by Sophie Tremblay-Pitre. Greg Everett is a local playwright embracing his darker side with his one-act play, Gullywhump.

The NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival runs in numerous locations in the city until August 3. See the full festival schedule on their web site. The one-act plays With Love, Josephine and Gullywhump are being staged at Memorial Hall at UNB at 7:30pm from August 1st to 3rd.

The Lunchbox Interview: Derek Davidson (Painting)

Posted on 2019-07-26 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

There is nothing so common to see yet uncommon to capture than the human form, or the essence of a moment.

My guest today is Derek Davidson, a sketch-and-paint artist. Derek talked about his work capturing natural scenes with sketches and paint, from spaces where the natural intrudes (e.g. dockside at St Andrews) to spaces where people are the focus. In his continued efforts to depict the essence of people, he’s challenging himself to sketch and paint faster, and is capturing bands live in Officer’s Square.

A Book Club… on the Radio? // The Return Of Readful Things

Posted on 2019-07-24 by Bondo Posted in Readful Things

A book club… on the radio? Readful Things is returning this fall!

There’s a certain magic involved when it comes to getting lost in a good book. They can take you to a whole new world, introduce you to new friends, some of whom you’ll keep with you for the rest of your life.

Readful Things is a book club made up of a diverse group of people who love reading. Made up of varying members each month, we get together to discuss a different book each episode over snacks and a beverage. 😉

Our fall reading list includes:
Fiona Barton’s “The Child” (September)
Anthony Kiedis’ “Scar Tissue” (October)
Sally Thorne’s “The Hating Game” (November)
Note: there’s no book for December because of the holidays, but the winter reading list will be posted by then! We’re always open to suggestions.

We’re always looking for more members so feel free to get your friends involved, too! It’s a great way to escape everyday life and perhaps read things you wouldn’t have otherwise. Contact Readful Things and get involved!

The Lunchbox Interview: Robb Kempson, Alex Rioux, McKenna James (Notable Acts)

Posted on 2019-07-23 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Theatre creates a make-believe space in which we can display the real world, and can compress all of time down to a single instance.

My guests today are all involved in this year’s Notable Acts Theatre Festival. Robb Kempson is the artist-in-residence dramaturge for this year’s festival, and has worked with all the plays and playwrights to polish and shape their works. Alex Rioux is the co-creator of Fruit Machine, a physical play presenting the questionable practices of the RCMP that targeted the LGBT+ community in the 50s and 60s, and is also acting in the play Gullywump by Greg Everett. McKenna James is a young playwright, currently enrolled in the drama program at UNB, and has a 10-minute play in this year’s festival called The Year Where No One Dies.

The Notable Acts Theatre Festival begins on July 23 with the preview pay-what-you-will performance of Fruit Machine at the Black Box Theatre at St Thomas University at 7:30pm. Prior to the performance at 6:30pm and in the same space, there will be a panel discussion entitled ‘Bringing Queer History to Light’. The festival continues until August 3. See the full schedule on their website.

The Lunchbox Interview: Emily Kennedy (Composer)

Posted on 2019-07-22 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Music is the distilled experience of the real, transformed from the literal to the figurative to the imaginative.

My guest today is Emily Kennedy, a local cellist and composer and member of numerous classical, avant guarde and pop groups. While she has been spending a lot of time lately performing, her time in the Barracks is being spent using graphic notation to compose a piece to be played by a group of improvisors. Her inspiration in this the patterns found in a plank of wood, tying the work to the general theme of trees which is this year’s challenge to the artists in residence. She discusses how she is planning this interpretation, and the importance of seeking inspiration and serendipity in musical art.
