Beneath The Lab Coat Ep. 009: Audrey Limoges

Posted on 2018-11-09 by Srijain Shrestha Posted in Beneath The Lab Coat, General
Dr. Audrey Limoges is Assistant Professor at the department of Earth Sciences at UNB Fredericton. She is specialized in the use of microfossils and other biogenic tracers preserved in marine sediments as tools for paleo-environmental reconstructions. Her work focuses on the interplay between climate, sea ice, ocean circulation and primary production. Through the study of the long-term response (centennial to millennial) of ecosystems to the natural variability of environmental parameters, her work aims to better predict the impact of ongoing climate and human-induced changes on marine ecosystems.

The Lunchbox Interview: Cathy Holtmann (PhotoVoice)

Posted on 2018-11-06 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words — but it still needs to be the right picture to pick the right words.

My guest today is Cathy Holtmann, Director of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research and Associate Professor, Sociology Department, UNB. She joins me to talk about this multi-location research project using the “PhotoVoice” methodology to explore issues of interfaith dialogue. In this project, students and others explore concepts and discussions using photographs as the focus.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

On this week’s episode, we are almost scary but otherwise the same as usual while providing new tracks for your listening pleasure. See? I can provide. I even used the word “provide” three times in the past three sentences.

I have nothing further to say that’s witty, though I do recommend that you chase after these new releases because artists should be paid for their work. Do it! Provide!

The Lunchbox Interview: Alex Rioux (Fruit Machine)

Posted on 2018-11-01 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

It takes a real artist to take the ugliness of the world and turn it into beautiful art, art that might still be ugly but has meaning.

My guest today is Alex Rioux, director and co-creator of Fruit Machine, a movement-based theatre piece looking at the attitudes, turmoil and impact of the RCMP’s questionable practices that targeted the LGBTQ+ community during the 50’s and 60’s. Alex joined me to talk about what inspired him to create this piece, the process of creating physical theatre, and the impact the material had on him.

Fruit Machine, along with another Solo Chicken Productions production, PIG, will be shown on November 1 at 7:30pm at the Open Space Theatre, 55 Whiting Road.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

Okay, so who’s been counting the amount of times “Monster Mash” has played on the radio this month? Also, who has Christmas decorations up already?

Ugh.

Anyway, we have a bunch of great stuff to celebrate today. The first is that both We Hunt Buffalo AND Striker released albums today, so go get those. We Hunt Buffalo has “Head Smashed In”, available on the Bandcamps, and Striker has “Pay To Win”, available on Amazon and major music retailers everywhere. These albums are awesome and you believe me because why the hell else would you be reading some jerk’s music blog?

Secondly, there are STILL MORE RELEASES coming out this year that I’m waiting on, because 2018 has proven to be fantastic for music.

And third, WHY IS OCTOBER ALREADY OVER. Somebody stop time from passing because I’m sick of it.

Playlist:
Julian – Starbenders
Every Breath – 1989
Our Song – Diemonds
Red-Light Revolver – The Red Coats
On The Run / Pay To Win – Striker (CAN)
Behind Closed Doors – SoulHealer
Blackstar – Parasol Caravan
Don’t Contradict The Facts – Side Effects
