Overtime! (06-15-18)

Posted on 2018-06-16 by Overtime Posted in General

It’s mostly bad sports news on Overtime this week:

  1. We talked about the issues plaguing the Ottawa Senators, particularly in regards to the Peace Bond and Harassment claims surround the Karlsson and Hoffman families.  Note:  All charges are alleged in this case, nothing has been confirmed yet and details are coming out all the time, we will provide whatever updates we can in the intervening time between shows… just in case it wasn’t clear on the radio.
  2. We talk briefly about the Golden State Warriors and how we feel about Kevin Durant’s comments from March compared to Alex Ovechkin’s “Immature” handling of the Stanley Cup.
  3. We talk about Daniel Carcillo’s Players Tribune video about his struggle to return to normalcy as a result of the various brain injuries he’s suffered.  Video is here: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/videos/daniel-carcillo-head-trauma
(Trigger Warning: Anatomy, Flashing Lights, Difficult Subject Matter)
  4. We talk about the gong show that was UFC 225, mainly because of the behavior of the people involved.  Though we take a moment to congratulate Ronda Rousey on a well deserved nomination to the UFC Hall of Fame.
  5. Running out of time we talk briefly about the ramnifications of the Unity Bid for the 2026 World Cup and what that means for Canada.  K also makes an appeal for us to all cheer for Morocco since they’re the only team with a Canadian born player on it.

Like we said on the show, nothing but good vibes to Daniel Carcillo.  Hope your recovery continues, as well as those of Nick Boynton and Andrew Alberts.

RFYL Episode – DeafestMuteEP23

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

So, a winning streak was finally brought down low by a case of onset Mute-ism, which is way less awesome than you can possibly imagine. I was forced to watch idly as bands I loved release new music and I couldn’t promote them at all other than to click “Like”. I’m back, somehow, for a new episode and I BARELY rasped anything out this time. Many good tracks, many fun things, and the titles of each track spell out a secret message if you read them backwards while on pain medication*!

*They do not do this.

PS: Go see my good friends Shades of Sorrow perform at the Capital Complex June 16th at 10 PM with METALLIFAX (which is an awesome name). Tell them I said Hi.

Playlist:
While I Was Sleeping – Starbenders
No More Stars – Die So Fluid
Dawn To Dusk / The Wire – Kilmore
Skyblazer – Shades of Sorrow
Daughters of the Sun – The Dreadnoughts
Astral Plane – Greystone Canyon
Ghost of a Storm – Crossing Eternity
Diesel Breath – Sergeant Thunderhoof
Sovereign Plea – SAATE
Silently Screaming – RAYNE
DNA – The Kills

The Little Station That Could – CHSR 97.9FM Successfully Hosts the 37th Annual NCRC

Posted on 2018-06-15 by Bondo Posted in Announcements, Events, Featured, Special Events

The Little Station That Could – CHSR 97.9FM Successfully Hosts the 37th Annual NCRC

For over 57 years CHSR 97.9FM has been a staple in Fredericton’s local alternative scene. A founding member of the National Campus/Community Radio Association (NCRA), CHSR 97.9FM won their bid to host the 37th annual National Campus/Community Radio Conference (NCRC), which is hosted in a different city or community each year. The last time hosted in Fredericton was 1994.

June 6th to June 10th saw 74 delegates from across Canada converge on the UNB Campus for workshops, caucuses, and presentations related to the campus/community radio sector. Keynote speakers included CRTC radio analyst John Fernandez, Bob Mersereau speaking on why the album still matters in a download day, Grid City‘s Matt Carter on how campus radio changed his life, and Peter Rowan delivered his race to the middle speech at the National Community Radio Awards held at the Charlotte Street Arts Center.

Organized by the smallest planning committee in many years, CHSR 97.9FM’s staff are proud of what they achieved. The consensus is this edition of NCRC has been the delegate’s favourite in recent history. The addition of a small music festival, Hometown Heroes, to coincide with the conference was a first for NCRC and featured 24 New Brunswick bands and artists to play in front of a national audience. “The idea was to try to level the playing field for New Brunswick musicians.” adds CHSR Station Manager Erin Bond, “With radio programmers and music directors coming from all across Canada, I wanted to show them what we’ve got. New Brunswick talent is just as strong, if not more, than in other provinces. We just need the opportunities to show it off.”

NCRC concluded June 10, 2018, the morning after a performance from Julie Doiron and The Olympic Symphonium at the Charlotte Street Arts Center and the final night of the Hometown Heroes festival at The Capital Complex.

CHSR 97.9FM would like to acknowledge sponsorship from the Province of New Brunswick, Music NB, Bellwether, Alert Ready, ERP Engineering, and !earshot; and thank The Capital Complex for their generous partnership.

The first official Overtime of the Summer!  On the Docket:

  • We keeps tabs on Denis Shapovalov’s 2nd Round French Open Game
  • We talk about Gareth Bale, the 100 Million Dollar “Man”.  (Man here meaning Substitute)
  • We take some time to break down how insane Gareth Bale’s contract is.  (It’s… a number)
  • We chat about the World Cup a bit too.  (Correction:  Longest drought since last World Cup win is England 1966)
  • If you were an NBA Team President, would you attack people on Twitter anonymously?… Someone did.
  • We talk about the NBA Finals and how outmatched it seems like Cleveland is.  Also the Dwayne Casey firing is still duuuuumb.
  • The Vegas pregame shows have been nuts.
  • Correct that, this Stanley Cup Playoffs has been bananas.
  • The Stanley Cup Playoffs are fun to talk about.

See you guys next week!

Understated and Compelling: Vic Horvath Performs at Living Roots Festival

Posted on 2018-06-01 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Music Reviews

By: Colin Fowlie

Back in October of 2017, I grabbed a handful of CDs to review and process before being aired here on CHSR, as is custom, and I happened upon an album entitled “West Coast Reign” from an unknown-to-me artist named Vic Horvath. I was sufficiently captivated by the songwriting and the presentation that I felt compelled to write a more detailed review for the CHSR website, which you can read here.

The cool thing is that there is a lot more to this story that transpired after I posted the review. One of my other recent pursuits involved volunteering my time to help find new talent and program the Living Roots Music Festival for 2018. I should include the caveat that Eddie Young, the founder and festival organizer, did roughly 99.26% of this work himself, but I was hoping to make a small contribution.

Upon discovering Vic’s music, I reached out to them just to show appreciation and thank them for the excellent music. I asked if there were plans to visit the east coast, gave details on the Living Roots Festival, and interest was piqued. Plans were made. Letters were written. Funding was secured, and Vic’s trip to the east was on. A small tour was booked around the Living Roots festival, and I had the pleasure of catching Vic’s set on Thursday, May 24th, at The Capital.

Photo Cred: Colin Fowlie

And it was worth the effort. The letter-writing, the planning, and everything in between. Well, at least for me, and also hopefully for Vic, who is a captivating artist with a charming, understated, but compelling stage presence. The strength of the songwriting that was immediately evident on the album is highlighted very well, even with arrangements that are stripped-down from the studio recordings. To be fair, the album production is also understated, but the occasional drum kit was replaced with a stomp pad, and the rest of the sonic space was filled with Vic’s honest vocals and guitar playing. Sneaky good guitar playing.

Moving between tunings and time signatures, Vic fit a couple of influential cover songs into a set of otherwise original material, paying tribute to Timber Timbre (Mountain Top) and the pride of Perth Andover, Matt Andersen (Tell Me). Great as those tunes were, they weren’t my favourites in the set. Those were, in some particular order: Shiny Shotguns, Hold Ground, and what indeed stood up as one of my favourite tracks of 2017 – Don’t Go Lightly.

I don’t have much more to say. It was a fantastic live show and I got to meet a great human from the other side of the country, all because of music found off the beaten path and the connections made as a result. If you see Vic Horvath in your local live music listings, just go check it out. It’s folky-bluesy-rocky (you know what I mean) with a few other sensibilities thrown in there for good measure.

In the meantime, be sure to check out Vic’s music from the comfort of wherever you like to listen to music.
