Theatre allows an actor to fully embody someone else for a while, a challenge both thrilling and sometimes a little daunting (which is also thrilling).
My guests today are Kyra, Liam and Len Falkenstein. Len is the Director of Drama at UNB, and Kyra and Liam are two of the lead actors characters involved in the upcoming Theatre UNB production of A Patriot For Me. We talk about the other choices that went into selecting this play for production, the challenges of being in the lead roles, and hear a scene between the two characters from the play.
A Patriot For Me opens April 4 and runs nightly until April 7 at Memorial Hall at UNB.

RadioU is a documentary series created by STU Journalism students. Each episode features a “major” and a “minor”, two topics that are somehow related. This series airs every Wednesday at noon, replacing an episode of The Lunchbox.
Back in the 1970s, cheap gas, muscle cars and open highways brought romance to the roads. But now people are getting interested in cars for different reasons. We’ll look at how New Brunswick is preparing for the age of electric, the safety of semi-autonomous vehicles and new alternatives for older drivers in a rural province. So on this show, we’ll be majoring in Science and Technology Studies with a concentration in Transportation.

Developed by the team behind Brothers a Tale of Two Sons, Hazelight studios brings a new title featuring co op mechanics that I have never seen in a game before, and it could not have been done any other way.
A Way Out tells the story of two different characters, Leo a short-tempered common criminal with a soft side when it comes to his family, and Vincent. The characters have been wrongly convicted by the same man, and end up in prison. About ten minutes into the game, Leo and Vincent start interacting with one another, realizing they are after the same person and want to escape for prison to get revenge. From this point on, we see Leo and Vincent work through numerous situations together in order to complete tasks to get out of prison. After the prison break, you find out why these characters are after the same person, you find out about the problems in their personal lives and together the characters try to fix the problems.
Working together is essential in this game every situation you must be done together. I realized how much of a co op this game was very early on, the specific situation, when Leo and Vincent are taking the back of the cell toilet off the wall and using a chisel to break the wall so they can crawl through. While one character does this, the other character watches out for the guards passing by and distracting them. Throughout the course of the game, there will be different ways to do things. You have a choice of doing things Leo’s (aggressive) way or Vincent’s (calm and smooth). Throughout the adventure, you get to compete in little mini games with your co-op partner like a game of darts and baseball or arm wrestling.
This is a great action-adventure indie title; there were times I was on the edge of my seat, like during the prison escape, the hospital escape & the motorcycle chase scene and the final twenty minutes of the game. I had a great time playing with my friend and co host even though I did not have a the full game I was able to play the trial version all the way through as long as he was playing as well. With that being said the game did have some issues, texture popping issues and some of the shooting mechanics; It should not take two or three head shots to kill an enemy. The game could have done without the shootouts at the end but it was a nice change of pace for the last half hour of the game.
A Way Out is more than I expected in every aspect, from the story to the game play & character progression. It falls in a genre we do not see enough of now days (couch co-op). With some great unique game play mechanics this is a breath of fresh air with a bit of minor problems it is so fun; that you will want to go back and see what you can do differently.
A Way Out 7.5/10

A Way Out
A Way Out is an enjoyable story driven game with a unique premise. You can play with a friend but only one person needs to own a copy of the game. You’re partnered with Leo or Vincent by chance. As you work together trying to escape from prison with your partner. Then running from the law as you try to find Harvey the person who got you both sent to prison.
The game-play is co-op based and can be played on the couch, or online co-op in split-screen with a friend. However the game only lets you play with people on your friends list. As well while online, only the person who owns the game earns the trophies. One thing I noticed while playing the game is that while both players are able to talk to other characters at the same time. The player who started up a conversation with a character second has the conversation muted and will have to read the subtitles. The game relies heavily on both characters working together. Be it by having them hit a button at the same time, working together to make a jump by holding down a button, or by having both players agree on an option. The game will take you about 6 hours to complete and costs $40
The story is told in segments with Leo and Vincent sitting in a plane reminiscing about their journey together up to that point. The players can choose which character they want to play as. Although I did not find it made a huge difference in the outcome of the game. The game is all about choices and working together, however after going back and changing my decisions on a few key choices. I found it changed a few cut-scenes and not the rest of how the game played out.
A fun fact is that the games contains mini games which makes for a fun diversion as you try to set the high score in games like darts, connect four, and other for bragging rights with your friends
8/10.

It’s easy to get the impression that the only people involved in staging a play are the actors on the stage; in smaller companies, that can be true, as every actor has several jobs.
My guests today are Mary, Veronica and Devon, three of the students involved in the upcoming Theatre UNB production of A Patriot For Me. Each of these students is involved not only in on-stage appearances but work in several roles behind the scenes. We talk about being a background and a foreground character, setting the stage and putting together the sound of the play, as well as each actor’s stage history.
A Patriot For Me opens April 4 and runs nightly until April 7 at Memorial Hall at UNB.

It’s almost Spring, and if that isn’t enough reason to kick up your heels with joy, how about we add music?
My guest today is Ysabelle Vautour, an enthusiastic member of Fredericton Swing Dance. Coming up on the weekend of April 6 through 8, they are holding the 5th Annual Swingin’ to Spring event, packed with lots of classic dance techniques, workshops and, of course, opportunities to tear up the floor with friends, old and new! She tells me all about the weekend event, how dance is bridging all ages of people, and the joy, fun and hard work that dancing can be.
Fredericton Swing Dance‘s Swingin’ to Spring starts with a dance on Friday (April 6), continues with workshops all day Saturday (with a dance that night) and continues on Sunday morning. It’s being held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 on Queen St in Fredericton. Find out more information on their Facebook event page. The Fredericton Swing Dance group meets regularly on Mondays and at other times. Bring your dancin’ shoes!
