Jared Durelle chats with Caribou Run about new release, Old Peninsula

Posted on 2018-06-26 by Bondo Posted in Homemade Jams, Music Reviews

Photo Cred: Caribou Run

Maritime band Caribou Run of Nova Scotia has released their second studio album Old Peninsula. Recorded at The Old Confidence Lodge in Riverport, Nova Scotia. The album is performed by Danielle Noble (Vocals, Keys), Drew Moores (Vocals, Guitar), Corey Thorpe (Vocals, Guitar), Jonathan Barkhouse (Drums), Peter Visser (Bass), and Mike Brunelle (Trombone, Vocals). The album features guest performances by Ken Voita, Rebecca South, Nik Field, Mark Adams and it was recorded by Diego Medina. Old Peninsula is a testament to neofolk as a genre of traveling troubles and triumphs. With the bluesy stories of misfortune and addiction coming from tracks ‘Silvia’, ‘Roll on’, ‘Mr. Rye’, ‘Fleeting Soul’, and ‘Money’ there are emotional jams backed by impressive and invasive instrumentals. The tone of the album is hopeful and grown from lament as tracks like ‘Wish You Well’ and ‘PEI’ capture adventurous connections. The most popular track ‘Carney’s Crossing’ is a percussion-fueled tragedy that barrels forward through steady rhythm and a constant refrain to the chorus of “…Meet me down at the railway crossing…”. Caribou Run’s Old Peninsula invites you into a truly beautiful adventure into the calming lament of lives lead a well as thought on roads to be tread. With a music video in the works and tour dates set the band is investing itself in growth and you should be investing your time into them. The overarching theme was born out of the bands Western Shore retreat after proving themselves with their first album ‘Something Organic Will Happen’. With its opener being the lament filled ‘Silvia’ where a single street is brought to life through an emotional call with no response except for the trombone and percussion filled instrumental which flows perfectly into the washboard back and forth of ‘PEI’. Caribou Run expose an emotional and spirited trip but it retains the fun cohesiveness that the group used to put together the album in the first place. The closing somberness of ‘Wish You Well’ holds the same calming passion of a sunset from some warm day long ago as themes of survival and the album’s namesake is revealed to be home of memories of heartache and soul. The album is best enjoyed whenever one wishes to let life in and hear music that is real in meter, measure and mature melody as the band captures both technical and thematic brilliance. May the sun also rise as Old Peninsula shows that Caribou Run can stand out on the East Coast. In their words, this is an interview with Caribou Run.

What could you tell me about developing it?

Photo Cred: Caribou Run

Old Peninsula seemed to come together really naturally and it was a very collaborative project by all of our band members. After the release of our first album “Something Organic Will Happen” in 2017, we started playing around with new material for fun, and ended up coming up with some stuff that strayed slightly from our original sound. We rented a house in Western Shore last October for a two day writing retreat, taking the time to sift through the rough material to see what resonated with us. We also brought some really old stuff back to the table that we hadn’t looked at or played in years, and re-wrote them to fit with the album. It was the first time we had actually dedicated time to song writing as a group, and we even surprised ourselves with what we came up with. A good friend of ours, Diego Medina, recorded the Old Peninsula album. His studio, The Old Confidence Lodge is in Riverport, Nova Scotia, and we have spent time jamming there and going to shows over the past few years. The location was a great backdrop for this album, as we had a personal connection to the venue.

Is there any piece in particular that had inspiration from a story in a band member’s life?

Most of our band members grew up in Nova Scotia, and the rest came here for a visit and decided to stay. The title, Old Peninsula is a reference to Nova Scotia, and is a lyric in the closing track on the album “Wish You Well”. Drew started to write “Wish You Well” while he and Danielle were on a road trip in the US a few years ago. It was a tribute and a reflection to home. The entire band seemed to gravitate towards this theme and we totally reinvented the song for the album.

What’re you doing as a group next?

At this point we are still riding on the excitement of the new album and we will be promoting it as much as we can this summer. We have festivals and shows lined up throughout the summer and fall in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. A couple we are really looking forward to are Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, and Knotty by Nature festival at the Ovens Park. All of our upcoming shows will be posted on the website and on Facebook! We also have a wacky music video in the works. So stay tuned for that!

Has the east coast been a good venue for art and performance?

The east coast is absolutely a good venue for art and performance, which we attribute to the great community of artists and to the supporters of live music. Although the number of music venues that genuinely support live music is dwindling there are some really special places on the east coast that are fostering a unique scene for musicians.

And is there anything you want to say to your fans or the public?

To the fans,
Thank you for the incredible support that we have gotten over the past few years playing on the east coast. We’re super proud of the new album and we hope you love it!
To the public,
Support local artists and live music!

The Lunchbox 2018-06-15: Adrian Park presents: The Ring

Posted on 2018-06-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

It’s seems rather fitting that such an epic myth should have an epic-sized opera to describe it..

My guest today is Adrian Park, host of the long-running classical music and opera program Diversions. Each summer, he extends his show length to a full four hours to accommodate a themed series of operas. He joins me today to talk about the spectacular summer series dedicated largely to a single opera: the influential, astonishing production of Wagner’s The Ring.

The Ring comes to town in July.

The Lunchbox 2018-06-20: Bard in the Barracks

Posted on 2018-06-20 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

The magic of Shakespeare is that we can both interpret it for contemporary audiences, adapt it for local stages (and woods!), and yet it still contains within in the original story and still moves us to laugh, cry and shout.

My guests today are Len Falkenstein, Robbie Lynn and Kelly McAllister, all from the upcoming Bard in the Barracks performances of Shakespeare in Odell Park and the Barracks Square. Len explains why he chose to bring back last year’s very successful A Comedy of Errors and added the lesser-known “dramedy” Cymbeline, and Robbie and Kelly play off each other with a scene from Cymbeline with their characters Cloten and Imogen.

Bard in the Barracks opens this Friday, and the season runs until July 8.

Overtime! (06-15-18)

Posted on 2018-06-16 by Overtime Posted in General

It’s mostly bad sports news on Overtime this week:

  1. We talked about the issues plaguing the Ottawa Senators, particularly in regards to the Peace Bond and Harassment claims surround the Karlsson and Hoffman families.  Note:  All charges are alleged in this case, nothing has been confirmed yet and details are coming out all the time, we will provide whatever updates we can in the intervening time between shows… just in case it wasn’t clear on the radio.
  2. We talk briefly about the Golden State Warriors and how we feel about Kevin Durant’s comments from March compared to Alex Ovechkin’s “Immature” handling of the Stanley Cup.
  3. We talk about Daniel Carcillo’s Players Tribune video about his struggle to return to normalcy as a result of the various brain injuries he’s suffered.  Video is here: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/videos/daniel-carcillo-head-trauma
(Trigger Warning: Anatomy, Flashing Lights, Difficult Subject Matter)
  4. We talk about the gong show that was UFC 225, mainly because of the behavior of the people involved.  Though we take a moment to congratulate Ronda Rousey on a well deserved nomination to the UFC Hall of Fame.
  5. Running out of time we talk briefly about the ramnifications of the Unity Bid for the 2026 World Cup and what that means for Canada.  K also makes an appeal for us to all cheer for Morocco since they’re the only team with a Canadian born player on it.

Like we said on the show, nothing but good vibes to Daniel Carcillo.  Hope your recovery continues, as well as those of Nick Boynton and Andrew Alberts.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks

So, a winning streak was finally brought down low by a case of onset Mute-ism, which is way less awesome than you can possibly imagine. I was forced to watch idly as bands I loved release new music and I couldn’t promote them at all other than to click “Like”. I’m back, somehow, for a new episode and I BARELY rasped anything out this time. Many good tracks, many fun things, and the titles of each track spell out a secret message if you read them backwards while on pain medication*!

*They do not do this.

PS: Go see my good friends Shades of Sorrow perform at the Capital Complex June 16th at 10 PM with METALLIFAX (which is an awesome name). Tell them I said Hi.

The Little Station That Could – CHSR 97.9FM Successfully Hosts the 37th Annual NCRC

Posted on 2018-06-15 by Bondo Posted in Announcements, Events, Featured, Special Events

The Little Station That Could – CHSR 97.9FM Successfully Hosts the 37th Annual NCRC

For over 57 years CHSR 97.9FM has been a staple in Fredericton’s local alternative scene. A founding member of the National Campus/Community Radio Association (NCRA), CHSR 97.9FM won their bid to host the 37th annual National Campus/Community Radio Conference (NCRC), which is hosted in a different city or community each year. The last time hosted in Fredericton was 1994.

June 6th to June 10th saw 74 delegates from across Canada converge on the UNB Campus for workshops, caucuses, and presentations related to the campus/community radio sector. Keynote speakers included CRTC radio analyst John Fernandez, Bob Mersereau speaking on why the album still matters in a download day, Grid City‘s Matt Carter on how campus radio changed his life, and Peter Rowan delivered his race to the middle speech at the National Community Radio Awards held at the Charlotte Street Arts Center.

Photo Cred: NCRA

Organized by the smallest planning committee in many years, CHSR 97.9FM’s staff are proud of what they achieved. The consensus is this edition of NCRC has been the delegate’s favourite in recent history. The addition of a small music festival, Hometown Heroes, to coincide with the conference was a first for NCRC and featured 24 New Brunswick bands and artists to play in front of a national audience. “The idea was to try to level the playing field for New Brunswick musicians.” adds CHSR Station Manager Erin Bond, “With radio programmers and music directors coming from all across Canada, I wanted to show them what we’ve got. New Brunswick talent is just as strong, if not more, than in other provinces. We just need the opportunities to show it off.”

NCRC concluded June 10, 2018, the morning after a performance from Julie Doiron and The Olympic Symphonium at the Charlotte Street Arts Center and the final night of the Hometown Heroes festival at The Capital Complex.

CHSR 97.9FM would like to acknowledge sponsorship from the Province of New Brunswick, Music NB, Bellwether, Alert Ready, ERP Engineering, and !earshot; and thank The Capital Complex for their generous partnership.
