Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Review

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Review
ICE, Gamers of the Round Table

Capcom is back with another installment of the Resident Evil franchise, taking the series back to its roots of survival horror. Does this installment live up to its origins or does it feel more like an action game?

Story: In Resident Evil 7: Biohazard you play a character named Ethan who goes searching for his missing wife Mia; she has been missing for three years in Louisiana. Upon your arrival in Louisiana, you encounter a psychotic family named the Bakers, but there is a dark secret behind their driven madness. Your goal is to save Mia and escape the Baker mansion.

Gameplay: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a first person psychological survival horror game. You go around exploring the Baker mansion and the grounds, collecting items like antique coins, keys for certain doors, exploring puzzles, and fighting off the molded (enemy type) with weapons from handguns to grenade launchers. This is the only the beginning of the game; you never know what is going to be around the corner. Filled with many jump scares and psychological horror, you will beg for the game to be over. Each baker family member is a boss fight but they are not too difficult which is nice, and as you get farther into the game you dig deeper into finding out what is behind their madness, discovering that things are not always what they seem.

Conclusion:  Resident Evil 7: Biohazard delivers a punch when it comes to the horror; from the classic feel of a messed up house, things moving around and hearing sounds, the puzzles, finding hidden rooms where someone may be kept prisoner, in no way does this game fall short. It is worth the eight hours of your time.
Resident Evil 7 Biohazard: 9/10
Good Job Capcom.

Run For Your Life! – the psychobilly rock show of zombie sharks
It’s the Valentine’s Day show! I don’t know why I put so much effort into Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s because I really don’t put effort into it. Arguably, though, it’s the most “celebrated” holiday on the show simply because there’s so many great songs to take out of context for the day.

Enjoy some “Classic” RFYL songs about love, beer, and never coming back with some favourites of mine! You’ll never be alone again once you get some of these tunes.

Damn, that was cheesy.

The Lunchbox Interview: Matthew Maclean (UNB Peer Support Centre)

Posted on 2017-02-10 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-2017-PeerSupportCentreJust as in science, no one need truly be alone to make progress in life; instead, we rely on the steady shoulders of loved ones, friends and our peers.

My guest today is Matt MacLean, the UNB Mental Health Strategist. UNB is launching a new Peer Support Centre to help students deal with a variety of issues surrounding mental health by talking to people just like them — their peers. Matt stops by to talk about how the program came to be, the overwhelming amount of enthusiastic support he’s seen for the project, and how students can drop in to get help through the hard times when they need it.

The UNB Peer Support Centre will operate in the Student Union Building room 103 (on the main floor, beside the atrium). It is open Monday through Wednesday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, and on Thursdays from noon until 2pm, starting Monday, February 13. Find them on Facebook for more details.

NIOH Review

Posted on 2017-02-09 by ICE Posted in Video Game Reviews

NIOH Review

ICE, Gamers of the Round Table

NIOH

Team Ninja and director Fumihiko Yasuda, who has worked on other team ninja games in the past such as Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, has brought us an all-new IP with the title of NIOH developed exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Does it live up to the challenge it promised or does it fall down in history?

Story: Set in the Sengoku Period in Japan, you play as the protagonist named William.  William comes from the west; his purpose in Japan is to pursue an enemy by the name of Edward Kelley.  When you arrive in Japan you find how easy it is to make enemies, unfortunately in this case, it is Tokugawa and his assistant Hattori. While you progress through the game you realize that Edward Kelley is making your journey more difficult using dark arts.

Gameplay: The gameplay is almost exactly like the Dark Souls series, but with some variety.  Through the journey of NIOH, you use an arsenal of samurai weapons and skills, but this game is no walk in the park; it is extremely difficult.  The smaller enemies you can approach and strike three times (usually) to kill them, but the bigger enemies require skill: timing, managing your stamina, and using the battle area to your advantage is required in order to defeat the bigger demons.  As you progress through the game you will acquire better weapons, armor, and unlock better skills with experience points you gain through victory.  You will come across a variety of weapons including katanas, bows and wooden hammers.

Conclusion: NIOH is a game that took me by surprise.   Although the game was incredibly frustrating, it was rewarding every time I defeated a boss; I felt like I really accomplished something.  I could not help but love this game from the time era, to the culture and the weapons of the Samurai, something that has always fascinated me.  NIOH was something very new to me as a gamer, and I could not put it down.  With great action and a compelling story, this game is definitely worth picking up if you are fans of the Dark Souls series, or are looking for a challenge.

NIOH 8/10

The Lunchbox Interview: Nadia Francavilla (“Anthèmes 2”)

Posted on 2017-02-06 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-2017-AnthemesWe are interfacing our art with machines more and more these days; then again, we didn’t have the machines to merge with before. Still, at the heart of music is a heart: a person.

My guest today is Nadia Francavilla, Musician-in-Residence at UNB. Nadia’s performances have often included experimental, alternative and very creative modern pieces, and the upcoming concert Anthèmes 2 centres on the composition of that name created by Pierre Boulez which is played between violinist and audio engineer. She joins me to talk about this upcoming concert centered around this unique duo of roles, as well as the other pieces matched with it.

Anthèmes 2 will be performed at 7:30pm on February 11 at Memorial Hall on UNB campus.
