There is no better way to get experience than by simply doing it — do everything you can manage to do.
My guest today is Quinn Bonnell, a musician from Miramichi currently living and working in Fredericton. His music draws inspiration from blues and John Mayer, plays guitar (and all the instruments), and is working on an EP due out around October. We talked about his background as a hard-working cover artist and his current ambitions to play music that people respond to.
You can catch Quinn Bonnell at the Fredericton Region Museum‘s free open-house day, August 14, between 1pm and 2pm.
I played two tracks from Quinn’s SoundCloud account: Moving Pictures and I Don’t Mind.

To make music is to combine the heart, the mind and the body in a singular expression — even if more than one person is involved.
During the summer, the Fredericton Arts Alliance brings a pair of artists together in the Barracks to practice their art for all to see. These artists come from a wide variety of disciplines, from painting and sculpture to basket-weaving and writing. As each pair of artists comes in, we’ll be talking to them on the Lunchbox.
My guests today are Natalie Sappier and Nate Miller. Natalie is known as a painter and artist, and Nate is known for new-age music, but together they are making music of another kind. They are spending two weeks in the Barracks as Artists-in-Residence collaborating on compositions with guitar, percussion, voice and keyboards. I spoke to them together about what they are looking forward to creating over this next couple of weeks, what creating music together is like for two solo artists, and what opportunities are presented to go from blank slate to finished product in the public “zoo” at the Barracks.
I played two piece of music from Nate’s existing catalog as Emanate 7, which features Natalie on vocals: Floating and Oceans.

Lego is back with an all-new installment of the Star Wars franchise, creating Lego Star Wars the Force Awakens. Does this particular installment conquer with the resistance or does it get beaten by the first order let’s find out?
Going into this game, I had no idea what to expect because I had never really played a Lego Star Wars game before. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised in how much fun I was having.
The game began with me taking on the role of Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Luke Skywalker in the battle of Endor. From there you progress through the story of the seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise. In the Force Awakens, you will play through Ten, epic chapters of non-stop action, puzzle solving, platforming fun. All the way from the Assault on Jakku to the Epilogue of Lukes island. Playing as characters from the franchise we all know and love and some new ones who we have grown to love.
Now the gameplay in this game is something that threw me off course because of Lego games I have seen before. It is an action adventure/ third person cover shooter, Which is great because we see all these genres of games coming together in this one game. When I started to be able to fly in the millennium falcon and dog fighting I lost my mind in excitement. Going around shooting, hitting enemies of the first order and watching them fall apart into pieces is very satisfying. Now as far as puzzles go the majority of them are quite easy but as I progressed through the story of the game I found them to become more challenging there were two or three puzzles that took me about fifteen minutes to figure out. While you are doing these puzzles you have to switch between characters a lot because certain characters that have certain specialties; which is why this game is more fun if you have someone to co-op this game with.
Lego Star Wars is a game that is fun and exhilarating with over 100 collectibles it gives you all the more reason to go back and play it all over again to get more of the collectibles that you missed on your first playthrough because you needed a certain character for. With great gameplay mechanics and great dialogue and some comedy that even an adult will have a great appreciation for. Lego Star Wars the Force Awakens is definitely worth the pickup.
Lego Star Wars the Force Awakens gets a 7.5 out of 10

We are reinventing folk music again, making it what it once was, and what it never was.
My guests today are Chewie, Pi and Sergio of The Steady Swagger. This Montreal group combines elements of folk, jazz, sea shanty, rockabilly, klezmer and a dozen other traditions into a rockin’, rollickin’, foot-stompin’ music they’ve dubbed “whiskeybillie”. It’s part pirate crew, part jazz trio, part kitchen party, and all fun. We talked about how this band came about, the broad range of influences that go into it, and the reception across Canada and throughout Europe to their brand of music.
They’re playing in Fredericton on August 9 at 7:30pm at The Grimross Brewing Company. Opening for them is Speedy Johnson.

Being human can be lonely and confusing some times; it can be hard to talk to people you know about things which are in your head. Kid’s Help Phone exists to listen to kids and offer a voice of support, a sounding board and a place to turn when no where else makes sense.
My guest today is Shannon, a Counseling Manager with Kids Help Phone. With Fredericton Pride right around the corner, it’s a good time to think about what sorts of questions kids might have about gender, sexuality and celebration. We talk about the opportunities Pride presents, how to prepare for Pride, and things both positive and negative that should be considered.
Fredericton Pride Week kicks off this Friday with a flag-raising at noon at City Hall, and runs for an entire week with a parade and several events around the city. Take Pride, everyone!

My guest today is Benjamin Dugdale, a local filmmaker working on composing film with traditional film stock. He’s currently one of the artists-in-residence down at the Barracks, working on editing his silent film. We caught up a little on the status of Knots ‘n’ Prods, a student film he last spoke to me about in January, as well as the wild process used to produce his latest work.

Clan MacLean was the host clan of Highland Games this year, and we learned a lot of Clan MacLean’s interests in promoting heritage throughout Canada. The imagination is the most powerful movie studio, the most meaningful writers, the most elaborate puzzles, the most affordable entertainment generator you can have. The game’s the thing, in which I’ll catch the imagination of a King!
My guests today are Julian and Marie from Enbicon, the region’s longest-running and largest tabletop RPG and war gaming convention. Each year, it brings people from all over for the love of the game, to challenge each other, to create tremendous stories, and to celebrate their fun. Julian joins me to talk about the kinds of games available this year, the return of some classic mecha [giant robot] tournaments, and the addition of a licensed area for adult gaming. Marie brings knowledge and a love of cosplay, with Capital Cosplay again returning as a joint convention, providing chances to talk about, display and create costumes.
Enbicon will be on the weekend of September 17-18 this year, at the Capital Exhibit Centre. Registration for those wanting to run a game end July 29, but player registration will run right up until the days of the convention. Join the Facebook group to discuss the convention, or follow the convention page and make sure you’re there!
