The Lunchbox Interview: Sarah Beth Shiplett (Music on the Hill) on Bogdan Dulu

Posted on 2015-10-15 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-BogdanDuluI am continually amazed with the complex creations that can come about from simple things like wooden boxes filled with metal strings being hammered by mallets under the direction of finger presses. The piano is, at is essence, a simple thing, but artists turn it into a vehicle for incredible beauty and sophistication.

One of those artists will be in town next Wednesday (Oct 21): Bogdan Dulu is a masterful musician, and will be conducting both a master class (open to all audience) and a performance (ticketed) at Memorial Hall next week, as part of the ongoing Music On The Hill series from UNB. Sarah Beth Shiplett from Music On The Hill is my guest today, talking about this pianist’s anticipated demonstration of very complicated performance pieces, the master class that comes before it, and the work of composers and performers.

Music today:

  • I began with an misspelled homage to one of my favourite shows (Twin Peaks) that happens to be a great song: Twin Speaks, by Jon McKeil, from his self-titled album.
  • It all comes round, so we listened to Again, by Faith Healer.
  • And to remind us of what we passed by the last time, we heard The Early Days by Old Man Leudecke, from his latest album Domestic Eccentric.

The Crazy Train Episode #LIX

Posted on 2015-10-15 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

newCTlogo_03012015

While I was away with Neighborhood Watch, the cats will play!

Steve ‘The Buzz Man’ Dunnett had on as a co-host Mr. Roger Jean, host of CHSR-FM’s epic Blues program ‘Rosie’s Juke Joint’. I have no idea what they played, but I heard something about Les Nesman of WKRP fame was also on the show… Though I think he’s dead…

Anyhow! Hopefully things will be returning to normal soon, as you all know UNB V-Reds Hockey has started up, so some Crazy Train shows air at 4-6PM when there’s a home game and our normal time slot of 6-8PM when there’s no game on.

Coming up, I’ll be away the weekend of October 24th as the Wasteland Zombies will be playing the annual Fredericton Zombie Walk to raise money for the Fredericton Food Bank. After that, no plans to be away!

Coming up this weekend the show will start off with an interview I did with Vancouver ‘stone’ Rockers ’88 Mile Trip’. Though the band did not play Fredericton, they were on a cross country tour and needed a place to crash over night. 88 Mile Trips drummer Eddie and I are good friends. I met Eddie when he played in a band called KOOZNETZ who were managed by former Beverly Soul Crusher bassist Geoff Vereschagin, who one day ran at me on the streets of Burnaby, thrusting the KOOZNETZ CD in my hand and saying, “You totally look like someone who’d love this band!!”. We’ve been great friends ever since.

We’ll also be playing some Canadian crazy Metal off of a compilation on vinyl I picked up called ‘Nuclear War Now’. Plus some other local and non-local Metal bands I’ve been meaning to play for weeks now!

Please share our show with all your Metal loving friends and if you’re a band or know of an Indie – Metal band in Canada that should be heard make sure you let us know! With that, if you have a METAL related event coming up, by all means let us know about that too!!

You can send your info to: musicdirectorATchsrfm.ca! Have a great rest of the week and Steve and I will be screaming at you this weekend at 4-6PM since there’s a home game for the UNB hockey team!

The Lunchbox Interview: Len Falkenstein, Alex Donovan, Jean-Michel Cliche on “Lac/Athabasca”

Posted on 2015-10-14 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-LacAthabascaAuthors are often asked, “Where do you get your ideas?”

For some, it’s from gentle nature, or from friends and family.

For Len Falkenstein, inspiration came in part from the tragedy of Lac Megantique — and the outrage that it ever happened.

Len Falkenstein is the author and director of Lac/Athabasca, a new play that has been shown in BC and Ontario and now comes to our very own Memorial Hall on October 14 to October 17. He joined me today along with two of the actors from the show, Alex Donovan and Jean-Michel Cliche, to talk about the experience of writing and staging this play, the challenges of the interspersed storylines, and playing multiple characters.

Music today:

  • We began with The Dears with We Lost Everything, from the new album Times Infinity, Volume 1.
  • A gentle-ish nod to those who have lost everything, we heard from Hey Rosetta with the song Soft Offering (For The Oft Suffering) from Second Sight.
  • And we ended with Midnight Meets The Rain from Destroyer, off the new album Poison Season.

The Lunchbox Interview: Thomas Morgan Jones (TNB) on Vigil

Posted on 2015-10-13 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-20151013-TNB-VigilThere’s often nothing more absurd than normal life — particularly when you can filter out all the other bits! The new production Vigil comes to the Theatre New Brunswick stage on October 22, and my guest today is Thomas Morgan Jones, the Artistic Director at TNB. We talk about the process of getting ready for this play, the unusual two-week run coming up, and the success of his recent workshops.

Music Today:

  • Greg Hemmings informs us he comes from the Happy Kind. Find that song on the awesome compilation It’s Always Sunny In New Brunswick.
  • Steph Copeland sings about The Man In The Back. (I assume that’s a theatre reference..)
  • And finally, Black Tooth Grinn just wants to Let Me Do. Done!

The Lunchbox Interview: Julian Christie (ENBICON)

Posted on 2015-10-08 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-Enbicon2015-2October has always been a great month for the imagination. One of the greatest holidays which promotes the use of the creepier side of your mind’s dreams comes at the end of the month, but this year we get a special bonus: the ENBICON game convention combined with CAPITAL COSPLAY!

The annual ENBICON gaming convention returned from the dead last year, and repeated this trick in February of this year, and now has a second edition in what might become it’s regular spot, in October. And this time, it combines another great local festival of creativity, the CAPITAL COSPLAY.

My guest today is Julian Christie, one of the organizers of ENBICON. We chat games from Pathfinder to the Artemis Starship Bridge Simulator, from war machine mecha combat to Star Wars miniatures. I (Mark the Encaffeinated ONE) am going to be running a game at the convention, and I hope many others will check it out.

Music today:

  • Matt Epp asks us if we are Ready In Time;
  • And we got some Fightin’ Words from Soho Ghetto just before the interview about Enbicon.

The Lunchbox Interviews: Brad Henstock, President of UNB/STU Young Liberals

Posted on 2015-10-07 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-YoungLiberalsIt’s election season, which you should probably know — even if you’ve been living under a rock. We’re nearing the end of the campaigning, and for some — including students — your opportunity to vote is already here! Time to check in with some of the people bringing you the urgency to elect your government.

My guest today is Brad Henstock, the President of the UNB/STU Young Liberals. We talked about his path to political involvement, what students are looking for, and what politics might look like in the future. Get engaged with the electoral process, and make sure to give your informed position on the end result by voting.

Music today:

  • From the brand new album Elements by The Long Distance Runners, we heard You Gotta Remind Me.
  • Olivia & the Creepy Crawlies give their song Your Door from Tongue-Tied a beautiful  spin.
  • And from the delightfully entitled Zazzerzaz II, we heard Cassette Please from Elephant Skeletons.

The Lunchbox Interviews: Jon Astle (Special Olympics Yellow Card Initiative), Sarah and Phoenix (Women in Transition House annual bed push fundraiser)

Posted on 2015-10-07 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox LogoOn today’s Lunchbox in the first half of the program we had on Jon Astle from the New Brunswick Special Olympics Committee to talk about the National ‘Yellow Card’ initiative, which is a new national and annual awareness campaign to help the Nation stamp out the use of the “R”-Word. The Yellow Card Initiative takes place October 8th in Fredericton’s downtown. The group will meet at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery on Queen st. at 11AM. There volunteers will be given a yellow T-shirt as well as yellow cards to hand out downtown during the lunch hour from 12-1PM. Each yellow card has information about the hurt and damage one can do by saying the “R” word and the cards will help create awareness of the social injustice such words have in our society. The cards also include a “pledge” to no longer use the “R” word.

The Special Olympics ‘Yellow Card’ initiative is still looking for volunteers, so please get in touch by calling (506) 455-0404 and you can also find out more information on Facebook by searching for the Special Olympics Yellow card campaign.

For more information: http://www.motionball.com/yellowcard/

In the second half of the Lunchbox I was joined on air by Sarah and Phoenix from Neville and Jones house here on the UNB campus to talk about the Women in Transition House annual Bed Push, taking place October 23rd.

Starting at Officer square in downtown Fredericton. The bed will roll nonstop around Officer Square until such time that the bed will be pushed up the hill to the BMO field on the UNB Campus. The bed will be pushed the equivalent to the distance of  traveling from Saint John to Fredericton.

In 2014 they raised $13,000! For more information: http://www.nevillejones.ca/history.html

There were some events to talk about and we heard music from:
