The Lunchbox Interview: Robert McMichael (YES Atlantic)

Posted on 2015-03-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-YesAtlanticThere’s a strong DIY undercurrent running through many circles today — but does that extend to business?

The answer is YES! The Youth Entrepreneurship Summit is taking place on March 20 and 21, bringing in young men and women from all over Atlantic Canada to learn, discuss, imagine, network and potentially construct the business opportunities of the future.

My guest today is Robert McMichael, one of the student ambassadors from the Pond-Deshpande Centre who is helping to organize the summit as part of the East Coast Startup Week.

Music today:

  • As befits the weather, we have Turns To Snow by The Fourth Well from their self-titled album.
  • And TTWWRRSS reinforces the need for networking in business with the song I Need You, taken from their TTWWRRSS_2 album.

Milk & Bone – Little Mourning

Posted on 2015-03-19 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams, Music Reviews

Little MourningSoft and sensual like silk in your ears, Montreal’s female electro pop duo Milk & Bone’s full length debut release Little Mourning is hypnotizing, dark, and sweet. Warmly singing lyrics like “You’ll never say you like me, I’ll never be your friend”, Laurence Lafond-Beaulne and Camille Poliquin’s crystal clear lyrics layered on top of a dreamy melody is refreshing in a genre that’s over populated with reverb heavy/over textured tones. Listen if you like to daydream.

Little Mourning is released March 17, 2015 on Bonsound.

Favourite tracks: Easy To Read, Pressure, Coconut Water, Watch

Buy the album on iTunes or Bandcamp!

STU Lunchbox: The Women of ISIS

Posted on 2015-03-18 by encaf1 Posted in STU Lunchbox

STULunchBox-WomenOfISISWhat does it take to want to join an organization that seems to be causing such hateful actions?

Who are the people who support and recruit for them?

Today, Taylor Hoyt and Jessica Christmas present their discoveries when looking into how people involved in ISIS discuss their motivations, and how they quite effectively recruit and promote their cause on Twitter.

The second half of the show is an exploration of some of the work behind the scenes in these STU Journalism Lunchbox documentaries, including clips from other work done by the class to work up to the storytelling craft they are creating. Presented by course instructor Mark Tunney.

The Lunchbox Interview: Chase Plourde (Espresso Yourself)

Posted on 2015-03-18 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-EspressoYourselfWe should celebrate diversity in many forms — not least of which is the diversity of ways we can love each other.

Until the day comes, however, it is necessary to support those who would speak out for and live in a variety of sexual orientations.

And if we can do that with music, poetry and coffee, well.. Even better!

My guest today is Chase Plourde, one of the organizers of the Espresso Yourself! Coffee House and Silent Auction. That’s coming up at the Roxstone Café on March 20, starting at 6:30pm. The event is a feel-good fundraiser for the Fredericton Pride parade (and other events put on by Fredericton Pride). Chase (and silent friend!) joined me to talk about the positive changing experience of the full spectrum of sexualities that this city is providing, as well as talk about the continuing need to reinforce open-mindedness and equality in sexual thinking.

Music today:

  • I’m dreaming of the hot, hot sun by playing It’s A Burn by Samantha Savage Smith off her Fine Lines album.
  • After an interview about a coffee house, why not play Wake Me Up from the self-titled album by Fossil Cliffs?
  • Finally, we Leave No Bridge Unburned and go Downtown with Whitehorse.

The Lunchbox Interview: Sara Roach (Crabbe Reggae Fest)

Posted on 2015-03-16 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-ReggaeFestIt’s gonna snow during the winter, so why not have fun with?

I’ve never really gone skiing, except for gym class. Haven’t gone sledding in years. Never been on a snow board.

But I’ve always admire those who do! They don’t look at a snowstorm with dread or regret, but relish the chance to get out on fresh powder, or cross over the land on skis.

Sara Roach is the President of the UNB Ski and Board Club, and she’s definitely one of those winter fans. She joined me to talk about the desire to get back to the powdery hills, and told me about a great program called CADS (the local program is CRADS – Capital Region Association for Disabled Skiing). That program gives instruction, assistance and support to those with mobility issues to get them out on the hills, enjoying themselves. The club is holding a fundraiser weekend for CADS, and it’s a great time to blow off some of that studying pressure in the great outdoors. We talk about the Crabbe Reggae Fest coming up on March 27-29 at Crabbe Mountain. Don’t miss it!

Music today:

  • I needed some Spring energy today, so I dropped a little Flower Dress by David R. Elliot into the CD player. That’s from his Rearrange album.
  • And reminding me that I can be feeling old and miserable, but still be a kid inside, I put on the song Young Heart from Stereokid‘s album of the same name. (Yes, I know that’s not what the song is about, but it was still inspiring..)

The Crazy Train Episode #XXXIV

Posted on 2015-03-16 by Chris Waddell Posted in The Crazy Train

newCTlogo_03012015

CHSR is currently having it’s annual Fund drive. Like PBS, we rely on funding from the community to keep this station on air! So please, if you can donate ANY amount at all, we encourage it, if not… No more Crazy Train or CHSR!!! You people power us! We need you! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/chsr-fundrive-2015

Oh my Satan what a weekend! Whew! So, the Crazy Train is a little shorter this week as we were broadcasting the CIS hockey playoffs live from Halifax NS.

We had on as guests, Tyson Davidson of Gods Divided (formerly known as ‘Anesthesia’), our roving Metal reporter Johnny James also sat in on the show with us and we had a suprise guest visit from none other than Crazy Train show creator!: Andre Faust!! We didn’t outright sit and talk with Andre, but that will be coming up soon! It was great to have everyone on with us!

For the play list of the show, I grabbed everything out of our ‘Play Box’. When bands send or give us their CD, it’s reviewed and if given an “A” review, then it goes directly into our ‘Play Box’ and it’ll stay there as long as it gets airplay. Some CDs, for example, Green Lung Grinders, Hero’s Last Rite and Kickin’ Krotch have been in our ‘Play Box’ for almost 6-7 months!

So, I’ll have the play list up in a while!

Until then, keep it Metal! And as always, if you’re band, you know of a band and want your music on CHSR-FM’s ‘The Crazy Train’, then by all means go to www.chsrfm.ca and click on ‘About’, then click on ‘Get Your Music On CHSR’, fill out the form or email me at musicdirectorATchsrfmDOTca!

In The Know Episode 11

Posted on 2015-03-14 by Joseph Keefe Posted in In The Know

In the Know.jpgHuman rights is a big issue for Canadians, especially after the Barrister’s Society of Nova Scotia made a decision banning law graduates from Trinity Western University in British Columbia from articling in the province because of a covenant signed by Trinity students agreeing to abstain from sex outside of heterosexual marriage.

For a country that promotes equality, free speech, freedom of association and freedom of expression, we seem to be going too far fighting for rights in Canada. The more rights a group wants in our so called free country, the more fights there are for more rights!!!!

We can never make everyone happy no matter what we do, but do we all need to be unhappy “FIGHTING” to be happy? If a man can legally marry another man, and a lesbian can date another woman while walking by a nativity scene at a local church out in public, why is it sex abstaining law school graduates from British Columbia are not granted access to an EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER?

So many fights for so many different rights!!!! Are we going insane? This episode of In The Know surrounds human rights in our country in the “Out of Right, Out of Mind” forum. Margaret Infringupon is a professor of Sociology at Trinity Western University and a human rights advocate. She is here to expose the underlying insanity in our country from all our redundant bickering, constant negativity, and countless money making rants on You Tube only perpetuating our “I AM RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG AT ALL COSTS” insanity from COUNTLESS rigid but fragile belief systems that are destroying our planet, AND US 🙁

With an interview that is both hilarious and serious, and a satirical political attack ad no one can actually sue us for here “In The Know”, this because it is currently impossible for ANY political party to sue another party for a REAL attack ad out in the REAL world, you will be asking more questions about fighting for human rights in Canada. Why is there so much fighting for rights in our country if we have an already existing Charter of Rights and Freedoms for Canadians that Justin Trudeau’s father signed in the early 1980’s?

Also, a beautiful parody song ends our “Out of Right, Out of Mind” forum. Enjoy our “CHARTER OF FIGHTS FOR FREEDOMS” eh! 22 Minutes and Rick Mercer, this ones for you 🙂
