Audio is the most reflective medium we have.
It is warmer than mere text.
It does not get distracted by unimportant visual stimuli.
It is the voice of people, listened to by people.
It is the closest thing to telepathy that we have.
Please support human telepathy.

The Lunchbox Interview: Jason Surette (Big Hearts, Small Cities)
A fire has consumed everything you owned. What do you do now?
You’ve lost all your money and your ids. What do you do know?
Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t have the immediate answer for that. Most of us don’t. Most of us don’t even think about what happens next.
But now there is even more help for that: Big Hearts, Small City.
Today my guest is Jason Surette, founder and principal worker at Big Hearts, Small City. Just in January, his group added coverage to Fredericton to the original city of Moncton to provide a very powerful service: interconnection between victims of disasters (fire, extreme water damage, devastating theft) and services that can help provide support during their time of need. John joined me to talk about the focus of the organization, where it started, and recounts a couple of tales of how they’ve been able to help people right away.
Music today:
- Shaun Leblanc reminds us that Paradise is right around the corner. Taken from his Kaleidoscope album.
- And just in time for Easter, Mindseed sings about the aftermath of strange bunny hunts with Eggshells, from their self-titled album.

STU Lunchbox: Fitness & Yoga
We should all make time to do a little exercise on a regular basis, but it feels like a really hard task to many people.
Perhaps they should realize that it is as much a journey as it is a destination. In the first half of today’s show, Kenya Marcelline explores the fun an energetic environments of Fredericton’s fitness scene, and talks to a zumbaholic, a cardio tennis master and yogis.
And in the second half, Brittany Lively takes a closer look at the calm and relaxing world of yoga, trying to answer the question: “Is yoga a really peaceful way to de-stress your life — or is it just a boring activity that ‘lazy’ people consider exercise?”

The Lunchbox Interview: Siddarth Raval (UNB ISA/Africa Night)
What do you know about other parts of the world?
For some of you, that’s where you’re from! Others of us probably learn a lot from television, movies and of course, the Internet.
But..
Wouldn’t it be better to learn it from people? And what about the food? That’s something you can’t get on the Internet!
My guest today is Siddarth Raval, an organizer from the new group called the International Students Association (ISA) at UNB. It’s a collective student club bringing together students from all over the world — including from Canada! — to support, celebrate and promote international cultures at UNB. They’ve teamed up with the African Student Union to create a wonderful event for this Saturday night: This Is Africa: Night of Legends. We talked about the variety of things to see and taste at this upcoming event, the work that the ISA is doing and the plans they have for the future.
Music today:
- Making staying home with yourself sound super-sexy, we heard Del Bel from the self-titled album with the song In My Solitude.
- And reminding us that a good party precludes good sleep, we heard Up All Night by The Marwills, off of their Facts + Figures album.

The Lunchbox Interview: Sarah Beth Shiplett on “The Hyper-Flute”
Have you ever looked at something and said to yourself: “I think we can change it?”
Cléo Palacio-Quintin certainly did! As a research project, she took a look at the venerable, traditional flute and said: “I can change that!”
She invented the “Hyper-Flute”, a “standard Boehm flute (the model used is a Powell 2100, made in Boston) extended via electronic sensors that link it to a computer, enabling control of digital sound processing parameters while performing” (abstract).
Cléo Palacio-Quintin is holding two free events here on campus, one on Sunday and the other at noon-time on Wednesday, April 1. Sarah Beth Shiplett joined me and (“Hi, I’m”) Fred on this edition of The Lunchbox to talk about the hyper-flute, the changing nature of classical instruments and the integration of multi-media into music.
Music today:
- Embassy Lights sings us a tale from their self-titled album that could describe the wintery days all too well: Cold Skin.
- And we are invited to go Down By The River by Sleepy Driver, presumably to watch the water rise and the Spring burst forth as the snow melts, not so we can meet someone named Ignatius who lives in a van..

The Crazy Train CHSR-FM Fundrive Radio-A-Thon Edition
Saturday was the CHSR-FM 2015 Fundrive Radio-A-Thon. We raised over $300 for the Indie GoGo Campaign!
The Crazy Train it self pulled in $30 from a 13 CD auction in which you the listeners bid on! Great job by Mama G (not her real name) for winning the auction and the CDs!
So we played lots of locals in the first hour, including some Hero’s Last Rite, Green Lung Grinders, Kickin’ Krotch, Death Valley Driver and so much more.
In hour II… Ohhh Hour II… Well we started out playing some great Metal, but as the auction wasn’t seeing a lot of action, things got drastic and we turned to Anne Murray and her Christmas hit ‘It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas’ in an attempt to irritate listeners into participating in the auction…. That didn’t seem to work, so expect a lot more Anne Murray in the future seeing as Metalheads seem to really like her music… JUST KIDDING!
Tune in this upcoming Saturday as we play an interview with Black Crown Initiate, which was done by our roving reporter Johnny James, while the band was in town last week playing a show at the Capital with Siegebreaker and Blueprints.
Our CHSR Fundrive is still on, and we’re hoping you can PLEASE contribute! Your money helps keep us on the air, it helps maintain our aging equipment as well as helps us support events around the city.
You can donate to the Indie Go Go Campaign here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/chsr-fundrive-2015
Or you can donate via our www.CHSRFM.ca website and click on the “Donate” button.
You can also always come right up to the station, we’re located in the Student Union Building, UNB
21 Pacey Drive, Fredericton.
We’ve got lots of CHSR shirts and record slip mats left!
Have a great week!

In The Know Episode 13
There are 2 very common sayings we Canadians hear all the time in our country: “That’s The Way It Is” AND “It Could Be Worse”. Wow! Our world is on its way to “Hell In A Hand basket” and we continue to destroy our ecosystem as quickly as former Toronto mayor Rob Ford went through a gram of Crack Cocaine in his office at lunchtime. As things keep getting worse and worse, we keep on hearing over and over again: “IT COULD BE WORSE!!!”
Carbon Dioxide levels in our atmosphere keep rising and rising, and we seem to keep falling and falling as a species. Will we ever learn? We complain about animals foraging for food in our backyards when it’s actually us foraging in their backyards. We’re continuously being molested by big oil companies wanting to “Protect Their Bottom Line Of Our Oceans” while we, the helpless sheep have to stand aside and suffer the consequences of their full blown addiction to money, or FRACK COCAINE, whichever comes first!!!
This episode of In The Know surrounds our ecosystem in Canada and the world in the “Induction Of Destruction” forum. With CO2 levels at 400ppm, Maria Naturegonn, a professor of environmental science at Saint Mary’s University and Hugh Righteous, an ecologist working for Environment Canada in Montreal are both here to tell us how insane we are becoming as a species, destroying everything in sight over $$$, the very thing we created with our own brains!!!
If you want an argument or finger pointing, turn on the evening news or go to You Tube. This compelling episode of In The Know points at ALL OF US, going down on our unsinkable Titanic, and fighting over which seat to sit in when it sinks!!!
With an interview both eye opening and hilarious, and a satire commercial being a perfect fit for 22 Minutes, you’ll once again be asking more questions about where WE are heading together as a species, this so the next time you’re driving down The Trans Canada Highway looking at all our beautiful trees, you’ll know that the all caring and all loving “IRVING FAMILY” is KINDLY hiding all their clear cutting from us to make you believe: “IT COULD BE WORSE!!!” The parody song in this one that I need to perform on 22 Minutes is “LIVE AND UN-CLEAR CUT!!!!” Kathy Jones, Mary Walsh and Rick Mercer, you have always been my heroes! If we still got some time on this planet, this ones for you, and Canada too, eh 🙂

Fundrive Video: Brydon Crain & Josh Bravener in Sessions @ CHSR
We love to do a lot of things here at CHSR. One of those is a performance-and-interview series we call Sessions @ CHSR. It’s from that series that we will draw the tracks for the EP perk on our IndieGoGo campaign.
Here’s a mini-example: a great song performance combining the talents of Brydon Crain and Josh Bravener, two wonderful performers who are rarely teamed up like this.
We’re hoping to do a bit more video to support the radio, especially of Sessions. If we can raise enough money, it’s a shoe-in! Please donate to our IndieGoGo campaign!
