In The Know Episode 7
Fast food is on a lot of peoples minds or stomachs these days, whether it be buying your kid a happy meal to avoid an “unhappy” meal at home, or cutting back on those delicious McDonald’s french fries to lose those stubborn “flabdominal’ muscles that just wont to go away. This episode of The Know is the “Sodium Explodium” forum. We talk about the health risks associated with fast food beyond “ALL THE ANSWERS” you hear from all those experts on other shows. The core issues regarding over-consumption of those tasty Whoppers are exposed, and of course, CBC news articles are referenced.
Michael D. Fryer, a biologist and physiologist from Waterloo University is interviewed, and ironically, he sounds like the nerdy scientist of the Simpsons, a hilarious but serious conversation! There is going to be both laughing and concern after you listen to this one. Those commercials that we need to get on This Hour Has 22 Minutes for me and the cast and crew to act out to give them a desperately needed ratings boost are included, and a parody song so unique and captivating, you’ll be asking questions about the nutrition facts at KFC instead of reading all the answers in the ‘approved fine print’ they give you.
Enjoy, uh!!!!!!

The Lunchbox Interview: Brandon Hicks on NFTC’s Live Audio Theatre Workshop
I love drama: on-stage, on audio, on the radio, in a book.
But what about crossing these forms?
The Next Folding Theatre Company prides itself on pushing boundaries and trying new things, as well as giving new playwrights a chance to get their work produced. My guest today is Brandon Hicks, the producer of the upcoming Live Audio Theatre Workshop. We talked about the compression of this three-times-a-year production into a single night, the process of working through the plays, and a description of the two known plays along with a hint at the surprise third production for the night.
Attend the Live Audio theatre Workshop at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on Wednesday, February 11. The show starts precisely at 7pm, so don’t be late! And you ticket will also qualify you for a free beverage or two, so enjoy the bonus!
Music today:
- Brother Octopus brings us Robot Heart, from the eclectically-recorded album Sea of Champions;
- And Little You, Little Me answers their own question from What Have You Been Doing With Yer Life with the song Something.

Featured artists included: Yo La Tengo, Best Coast, Al Tuck, The Bicycles, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Cuff the Duke, Fountains of Wayne, Deerhoof, and Ron Hynes!

In The Know Episode 6
Manufactures seem to be making their products last shorter amounts of time these days in Canada. A woman buys an I-Phone 5, and only 1 year later, her phone is slow and her charger is broken, but fret not! All she has to do is upgrade to the I-phone 6 to get a new charger!!!! A man finances a Dodge Charger, and only 4 months later, his “Check Engine Light” comes on, and some unexpected electrical fixes need looking at, so the Chrysler Dealership “takes care of it” just like the Mafia does, because we all know: ITS JUST BUSINESS, forget about it!
This is the “Buy It Then Try It” forum In The Know. Travis Twitter is an Economist teaching at Saint Thomas University right here in Fredericton, the city where nothing ever happens, Lol. He is an expert, and the issue of “Planned Obsolescence”, the process where manufactures deliberately make their products last a short amount of time so we, the good obedient sheep, the consumers, get the latest upgrade sooner than we did in the 1980’s.
Of course, those awesome commercials, soon to be on This Hour Has 22 Minutes will have you chuckling, and an amazing parody song based off of “Oh Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbison will have you asking more questions about “Planned Obsolescence” instead of “hearing all the answers” on those other shows!
Enjoy, uh! It’s Joe Canadian, eh!

The Lunchbox: Interview: Fossil Free UNB
There’s no denying that fossil fuels play a big part of just about everybody’s life — but it is too big a part?
There is a growing movement to stop supporting the fossil fuel industry, at the very least until the industry cleans up its act, but also to promote alternative fuels.
My guests today are Richelle and Avi from Fossil Free UNB, a group on campus affiliated with the international 350.org. They’re calling for UNB to divest it’s financial investments in the fossil fuel industry, and re-invest those monies into other fields, such as renewable energy. We talked about the reasons to divest, the challenges of this message, and their event coming up on Thursday night.
Music today:
- Golden Dogs present Decided from their new album, 3 1/2;
- And relating (somewhat) to our guests, check out the lyrics of Cold Black River by Sleepy Driver from their album Ignatius.
