The Lunchbox Interview: Chuck Bowie, Author
It’s November, and for a great many people around the world, it’s time to write. NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month is a challenge to produce a novel-length work (50,000 words) in the month of November. If you do the math, that’s about 1,500 words a day!
Not everybody can write that fast. Most, like my guest today, try to write every day, and keep writing until the book is finished. Chuck Bowie is celebrating a great week: his second book (AMACAT) just came out, his first book (Three Wrongs) is due out in paperback this Friday, and he finished the manuscript to his third book (Steal It All) today — and the ideas for the fourth book are already blossoming.
His novel series, Donovan: Thief For Hire is so far out in digital format, with the paper books coming soon. He joined me to talk about the writing life, where he found his inspiration, and the sheer joy of creating your own world.

Episode 315: Hal-Con Pre-Show with Ryan Lee
This week on WMD Radio, we’re getting ready to hit the road to Hal-Con. And we couldn’t have thought of a better way to do that then by having Ryan Lee on (Chronic Insomnia).
Ryan is about to hop a plane and join us in the Great White North, just in time to have us murder him in his sleep. (God I hope he’s not murdered in his sleep, otherwise it’s going to look real bad for us.)
In addition to planning Ryan’s murder we’ve decided to discuss 6 recently released comics:
Rasputin #1, Deathlok #1, Southern Bastards #5, Gotham Academy #1, Arkham Manor #1 and She-Hulk #9. Hope you can join us!
As always, we welcome you to participate in the show. You can post any questions or comments you may have in our Facebook group, on Twitter (@WMDRadio) or call us at 506-452-6056.
WMD Radio is brought to you by Strange Adventures and Club Fred Grafx.

The Lunchbox Interviews: Jack Ward, Jenn Russell
I have always loved stories, whether they are in a book, spoken aloud, acted on stage or screened on TV or the movies. One of my favourite ways to experience them is acted in audio form, what is often called audio drama. This past Thursday was World Audio Drama Day, an expansion of the National Audio Drama Day, both set on the anniversary of one of the most celebrated — and infamous — audio drama presentations of all time, Orsen Welles’ production of The War of the Worlds, originally written by HG Wells.
I spoke to Jack Ward, one of the people trying to boost the signal on the world acknowledgement of audio drama. Jack is the host of The Sonic Society, a renowned audio drama radio anthology produced for sibling-station CKDU in Halifax for the past 10 years. He’s also an actor, writer, and producer of audio drama, and someone for whom I have tonnes of respect. We talk about his history with the form, what it means to him, and chat about some of our favourites.
And Erin “Bondo” Bond (host of the M-F 4pm music show Homemade Jams) had the chance to chat with Jenn Russell. Jenn is playing this weekend at TNB’s Maritime Fusion Fundraising Gala with her enormous group. They discuss the growth of old-fashioned jazz in the province and Jenn’s love of the music.

The Lunchbox Double Interview: White Ribbon & Brain Tumour Foundation
The world is a complicated place — or is it?
Fundamentally, love and kindness — as well as knowledge and communication — make the world a better place. That is very evident in the pair of interviews I had today.
First, Jennifer Richard and Barry MacKnight join me to talk about the White Ribbon Campaign, and the upcoming Monday noon march, “Men Speaking Out To End Violence Against Women”. While I went off on a tangent about the changing definitions of male identity, they rightly bring me back to the point: that violence against women is wrong, and that men have to take responsibility for the largest source of that violence and put an end to it. The march on Monday is meant to raise awareness that there is a problem, and that it is imperative for men to both speak and act out against this violence, as well as support women who seek justice and recovery from violence. (Find them on Facebook or Twitter.)
Second, Rick Lyons and Ida Orenbach dropped by to talk about surviving a brain tumour. Both of them recounted their experiences, from noticing symptoms to the fateful day they found out, to the quick action the medical professionals took to help them. We also talk about the ongoing struggle to recover, the changes that it makes in your life, and the support groups that help the survivors and their friends and family to cope. CORRECTION: we accidentally gave out the wrong web address for the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada. The correct address is braintumour.ca .
Note: today is, in fact, World Audio Drama Day. I had an interview prepared for today with Jack Ward of The Sonic Society, but accidentally double-booked live guests. That interview will be airing on Friday‘s show.

The Lunchbox: Interview about Theatre UNB’s “Les Belles-soeurs”
I love good theatre. It moves you in a way that a movie can’t touch, engages you like a book made manifest. It transcends language and place, yet can be just as rooted in it.
Les Belles-soeurs is a celebrated French play by Quebec playwright Michel Tremblay. Theatre UNB, under the direction and leadership of Len Falkenstein, is staging the English translation of the play from October 28 to November 1 at the theatre in UNB’s Memorial Hall, 8pm each night.
Len Falkenstein brought two of his actors, Kirsten Stackhouse (who plays Germaine Lauzon) and Dani Brun (who plays Marie-Ange Brouillette) to talk about the origins of this play, what it’s like to have such a large cast, and the challenges which make this a fun comedy.
