The Lunchbox Interview: Misha Milchenko on Trans Day of Remembrance

Posted on 2014-11-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-TDORHuman beings are complicated. This is true in so many ways, but one of the ways that the world is coming to understand more and more is in the area of sexual identity. The binary concept of “male” and “female” has been inadequate to describe the full range of identities, not least of which because it combines internal, external, emotional, cultural and societal descriptions into a simple dichotomy.

My guest today is Misha Milchenko, past organizer of the Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), which occurs every November 20. It is an opportunity to recognize and remember victims of violence, oppression and anger around the world who were targeted because they identify themselves as transgender. It’s also an opportunity to challenge the language we use and the attitudes we hold, to become more inclusive and understanding. We discussed the unique issues, support and language of transgender identities, attempting to inform, instruct and correct the world.

Join them in front of Fredericton City Hall — or indeed, in many places across the world — as they hold a vigil and read the names of the victims. Bring your candle, wear something purple to show your support, and join in the remembering at 6pm on November 20.

The Lunchbox Interview: Sarah Beth Shiplet of Music On The Hill

Posted on 2014-11-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-SoundtrackToASilentFilmMovies have soundtracks.

It’s something we often take for granted these days, but as a soundtrack collector, I’m still immediately aware of the dramatic effect a good soundtrack can have — and the detrimental distraction a missing or bad soundtrack can create.

But once upon a time, moving pictures and music were just getting to know each other. Come experience what that might have been like on Wednesday evening at the latest Music on the Hill event, Live Soundtrack to a Silent Movie, as a group of musicians perform with the celebrated silent film, “Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans”. That’s happening at Memorial Hall on November 19, at 7:30pm.

My guest today was the administrator of Music on the Hill, Sarah Beth Shiplet. We talked about the formation of this event, the challenges of performing music timed to a movie, and the experience of movies and music combined.

The Lunchbox Interview: Toni DaRussio, Filmmaker

Posted on 2014-11-17 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-ToniDaRussioThe world of films is the land of make believe.

At 20+ frames per second, we are shown the illusion of motion, tied to the accomplice of sound, and then transplanted into a story, sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes for several hours.

Done well, and with the other willing accomplice — our own minds — the real world is replaced for a while, and we are treated to visions of other places, with stories that are not our own.

My guest today is like that: an illusion of reality, a story not my own, a suspension of disbelief, with reality as his message.

Toni DaRussio is a filmmaker. Of that, I am certain. The rest is..

Well, perhaps it is left to the imagination.

We talked about the making of his production company, (Dreamboat Pictures), his latest film (Mayhem Beach), featured at the Silver Wave Film Festival, and his vision of what making movies could be.

Mike Trask and the Precious Memories release new single “Sadie”

Posted on 2014-11-17 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes, Homemade Jams, Instant Breakfast, Music, Music Reviews, Spotlight

sadie

Mike Trask and the Precious Memories are releasing a new single Sadie digitally November 20, 2014, the first co-write between Precious Memories members Trask and Adam Mowery. For just under 4 minutes the Precious Memories deliver more of that sound that we love, the tip of the hat to 60’s San Francisco psych pop melodies with a McCartney-esque rock edge.

Upon first listen, Kim D’Ambrosia’s velvety vocals set the scene of a heartbreaking song about a girl who doesn’t fit into regular relationships with normal people and he’s leaving her. But the message poetically delivered through Trask’s signature soulful raspy voice is that it’s the gentleman’s loss and probably for the best. David R. Elliott sings “Beyond the storm clouds overhead the sky is so blue.” making this a song that many women can and will find comfort in.

Catch Mike Trask and the Precious Memories live at The Capital in Fredericton December 5, 2014, and check out the single here!

The Lunchbox Interview: Shelder The Electric Clamfish

Posted on 2014-11-14 by encaf1 Posted in General, The Lunchbox

LunchBox-ShelderTheElectricClamfishThere’s something to be said for live music, for experiencing an artist who’s playing right in front of you, for you.

Today, I had the good fortune to have a front-row studio seat to a delightful performer with a pearled accordion, a young woman from BC who goes by the stage name of Shelder The Electric Clamfish. (Facebook)(Bandcamp)

She’s just as eclectic as her name, bringing forth a great French folk tale in musical form, and traveling with not one, but several instruments — only one of which resembles the travelling musician’s standard guitar (a ukelele).

She joined me to talk about living the touring life, having fun on stage, and seeing all the biggest things across the country — as well as perform one of her songs based on a classic French Canadian legends, La Chasse-Galerie.

The Lunchbox Interview: Melissa Leblanc, Drama UNB

Posted on 2014-11-13 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-DramaUNBAh, the power of the stage!

We are surrounded by drama, but most of it is disconnected, flat, prerecorded, editted, pre-processed and, in a way, dead. Give me the stage, with performers mere feet away, real humans who are dressing up in clothes and emotions, delivering speech and movement to convey a story far bigger than what you are just seeing…

But it all has to start somewhere. It doesn’t have to be a full, big production. Sometimes, it just has to be a letter.

The introductory theatre course of UNB Drama is starting there, and inviting you along for the minimalist performances of Unfolded, a composition of the dramatic monologue presentations of a collection of letters.

Melissa Leblanc is an advanced student taking the course as an elective, and she joined me to talk about getting inside the letter, the preparations needed to stage a series of monologues, and what is next in her dramatic pathway.

Unfolded runs just two nights at Memorial Hall on campus, November 13 and 14. Doors open at 7pm, performance starts at 7:30pm, and there will be an intermission. Tickets are by suggested donation of $5.
