The Lunchbox: Interviews: UNB Art Centre & Thom Pain (based on nothing)

Posted on 2013-10-31 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-unbartcentre-thompainAnother double-decker Lunchbox today, exploring the arts from two different perspectives!

First up, Lori Quick from the UNB Art Centre dropped by to remind us all just what the centre is all about, from a working space for members, to encouraging people to discover their own artistic side through workshops, to keep UNB filled with great artwork, and more! The UNB Arts Centre is located in the Memorial Hall building on UNB Fredericton campus, with a main office on the main floor and the second floor workspace. For more information, you can also contact Lori Quick via email, lquick@unb.ca.

The UNB Art Centre will be launching Redeemed, an exhibition of photographs and a book capturing the restoration process of the Fred Ross Mural at UNB, as well as an exhibition of recently acquired works by the art bank.

Second, we meet Alex Donovan and James Corbett, actors and directors swapping roles on a nightly basis for the production of Thom Pain (based on nothing). They’ve enthusiastically created this new theatre company, Imaginary Circumstances Theatre, and are looking forward to adding more contemporary and provocative theatre to our great local drama landscape. We find out their dramatic journey thus far and just how a one-man play becomes a two-man play. Thom Pain (based on nothing) runs November 1 through 3 at 7:30pm at the TNB Studio on 55 Whiting Road. They also have a matinee on Sunday at 2pm. The actor and director swap for alternate performances, so seeing it twice is like seeing it new each time!

This Ship About To Cast Off On Tour!

Posted on 2013-10-30 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes

What's LeftTo BurnThis Ship formed back in 2011 and may be a band best described as perhaps art rock. The Halifax based group have been commanding everyone’s attention as of late and their buzz has been steadily increasing. This Ship’s music has something for everyone whether it’s clean riffs, lavish tambourine, hand clapping, or keytar.  On June 22, 2013 they released their 5 track EP All The stars And Elements (that actually runs as a full length) and set sail  on a 17 date tour supporting the album. While still on tour in Quebec City they stopped and did what all bands to right after they release an album, they recorded another EP at Pantoum/Le Phoque.

Wait, what?!

This Ship is one ambitious band because they are releasing their new EP What’s Left To Burn on November 12, 2013! Having had the pleasure of listening to this EP a few times already I can assure you it’s going to knock your socks off. While all taking turns on vocals and super catchy hooks throughout the EP it leaves you wanting more after the final track Shelter has ended. Don’t believe me? You can listen to Shelter here: http://thisship.bandcamp.com/album/whats-left-to-burn Or better yet, check them out while they’re on the road this November:

November 15th – The Cellar, UNB Campus, Fredericton NB

November 16th – Hunter’s Alehouse, Charlottetown PEI

November 22nd – Michael’s Bar & Grill, Halifax NS

November 23rd – Plan B, Moncton NB

November 29th – Pepper’s Pub, Saint John NB

November 30th – The Capital, Fredericton NB

The Lunchbox: Interviews: Protest the Hero and The Odyssey

Posted on 2013-10-30 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-pth-odysseyA pair of epic tales for you today! First, Jake Hollis (the host of the new show Zos Kia, found Thursday nights at 10:30pm) got in touch with metal band Protest The Hero. They talked about the changes in the direction of their music and the process behind coming up with their brand new album.

Then, in the second half, the studio is invaded by the travelling Odysseus, as I am joined by the director and two of the cast from the upcoming student production of The Odyssey. Len Falkenstein is the director of this adaptation of the classic tale (and the prof for the drama classes who are staging it). Kayla Ossachuk is a film studies major in the middle of her studies, and plays the goddess Athena in the production. And former UNB Student Union President Andrew Martell plays the lead role of Odysseus himself. We talk about the great diversion that is drama, the staging of such a massive production, and how unique this performance will be — both for the performers as well as the audience.

The Odyssey will be having a dress-rehearsal early presentation on November 5, and entering into its normal run on the 5th through 9th of November. The performance is being staged in Memorial Hall on UNB Fredericton campus.

Tickets are available at the door:  $14 regular, $10 Senior/Underwaged, $8 Student; $2 discount on all tickets for Nov. 5 Preview performance.

Mike Trask and the Precious Memories

Posted on 2013-10-28 by Bondo Posted in Anything Goes

Mike-TraskWhat happens when a musician buys an old discarded family photo album? He turns it into an amazing record. When Mike Trask and friend/artist Benjamin Allain purchased a photo album Allain made a collage and Trask became inspired to write a song. Trask showed the song to Allain and Allain created another piece of art. This back-and-forth continued until Trask had completed the 10 track album titled “One Big Happy Family” performed by Mike Trask and the Precious Memories.

Trask created a New Brunswick super-group by forming The Precious Memories, made up of friends  Adam Mowery, Owen Steel, David R. Elliott, and Becky Siamon.

The album describes family interactions common of the era of the 40’s and 50’s, the time when some of the photos in the purchased album were photographed. The music itself keeps a vintage sound throughout the entire album but especially in tracks like “He’ll Take Her Dancing” where Mowery takes the lead in vocals and “Home For My Love”. The album’s first track, “Those Eyes”  has gripping harmonies, Siamon’s voice compliments Trask’s perfectly. Within the first 60 seconds of the album I was already hooked. “Mean Old Man” is a fun track with a chorus that will stick in your head, and “Rhythm and the Beat” has a Southern preacher blues rock style. The title track “One Big Happy Family” describes this groups dynamic very well in my opinion. It’s lively with everyone taking turns on vocals. And then there’s my favourite, “Judy Moon”. Another track with a very vintage feel about a man who doesn’t know how to let his missus know that she’s the best thing that has ever happened to him, a common theme even in today’s society.

Released in September 2013 this by far is my favoruite album this fall. To purchase your own copy check out http://miketraskmusic.bandcamp.com/
