This week, two Lorenzo readings were held on campus for the reading series: Patrick Rothfuss, author of the Kingkiller Chronicles (his first book, Name of the Wind, part of the library at UNBSJ, Hans W. Klohn Commons’ One Campus One Book project), and Wayne Johnston, author of Son of a Certain Woman.
So, maybe we should start at the beginning. A friend and I arrived late to the Rothfuss reading, hitting Grand Hall twenty minutes late, full and sleepy from dinner, carrying coffee and cameras. Luckily we didn’t seem to disruptive, and found two seats near the front of the room.
Although Rothfuss read nothing of his novels, two of three currently published, he did share some of his blog posts (he also is part of “Geek & Sundry” on youtube) and also answered many questions. The reading had an air of an oddly comedic stand up routine. And that beard? Way more majestic in person. So, deciding I liked his character enough to trust his words, I thought, “as a writer, I should ask about publishing”. So I raised my hand.
R: Yes, over here?
K: I have a publishing question. When should I bring my manuscript to a publisher and how do I find one?
R: …how many people want to hear this? (5 or 6 people raise their hands–I sink into my chair in shame.) Okay. How about we go for coffee after, whoever wants to come, and talk about it?
So, excited and humbled, I grabbed my friend and hung around with what turned out to be 10-ish others at Grannan’s on the Boardwalk, and had a nice, funny, informative chat with Pat Rothfuss after the show. Hello, Heaven!
Two days later, we saw Wayne Johnston (and were late, again, caught up playing piano in Oland. I can never pass up listening to him play). However, we finally arrived, early enough to catch most of the reading. His main character’s slogan, “give me myth or give me death” ringing through my head as he read, we assumed it would be like any other reading.
Until Johnston and a guest gt into an argument about a dislikable main character, where Johnston was trying to chage the subject and be rational and kind but was becoming visibly annoyed. Luckily, more questions were raised and the subject was changed, and his humor and intelligence flowed through his fiction and his human replies to questions. Overall, it was a great night.
The readings have been a surprise and a blast, and I would highly recommend anyone to come see one in Saint John.
Don’t Panic! We’re talking about one of our favorite mini series, books, and movies: Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Hailing from the mystical, magical land of Ontario, A Primitive Evolution (hereby referred to as ‘A.P.E.’) decided to rock our world with an amazing, full-electric session. They made us dance even though we can’t, and we absolutely love them for it.
Many props to Brett Carruthers (Singer/Guitarist/Audio nerd) for remastering the session himself in his own time. Otherwise, it was me (Matt Nightingale) working the boards and doing the interview.

This month we are shining a spotlight on the Charlotte Street Art Center and their annual Haunted House!
Our vision statement is to “open the doors of creative expression to all“. That means removing barriers to opportunities in the arts so that everyone can have access to them. We do this by providing free educational programs to underprivileged groups, for one – that’s what the proceeds of the Haunted Tour go to support: our long-standing ArtReach program. Through ArtReach, we partner with a dozen other community organizations to open up arts programming to their (our) communities.
more details please click: http://charlottestreetarts.ca/
This year’s Haunted Tour is going to be much different from all the previous years. The LOW SCARE tours (for kids) are being moved to Science East, so the Charlotte Street Arts Centre is going to have four days of HIGH SCARE only tours (for adults). It’s going to be scarier than ever! Also, there’s a more streamlined path of horror for visitors, so wait times will be a lot less. The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick have worked really, really hard on offering this tour each year as a fundraiser for the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Every year, they have more new ideas to ramp up the freak factor, and just keep outdoing themselves.

After the Haunted Tour, we’ll be kicking into full gear to get ready for the upcoming 3rd Annual New Brunswick Musicians Emerge Festival. This one’s going to be really great. Over 70 different NB musicians and music groups applied to be a part of it and a committee selected 8 bands to perform. More info on the event is below:
NB-ME Festival (New Brunswick Musicians Emerge)

Yes, there will be actors but their identities will need to remain confidential….one of the other theatrical groups who will be participating this year is led by Judy Lavigne of Madrigal Players. Each night will have a little bit of a different theme…and there will be a weave of various performing artists entertaining throughout the evening. FYI – the Engineers APEGNB are the driving force behind this fundraising event.
There’s no other place like the Charlotte Street Arts Centre in Fredericton and surrounding areas. We make art accessible to people who wouldn’t normally have access. We work to provide opportunities to marginalized communities, the elderly, youth-at-risk, women and children recovering from domestic abuse, and more.
We’d really like to increase access to our facility by installing an adequate elevator. The single-person lift we currently have will only take one individual at a time from the first floor to the second floor in the front part of the building. Most of our events, the café, etc are all in the back part of the building and people with mobility challenges can’t partake. It’s our goal to keep working on this over the coming year and for as long as it takes until we achieve our goal.
The Belle Comedians are a Fredericton treasure and unfortunately they’re leaving town. Tune in to hear them talk about what they’re up to, their future plans, and talk about the best parts of Fredericton.

Can a contradiction really exist?
Even if self-conflict is dismissed as semantic, perhaps it might have an edge of truth. Perhaps it sees truth from its vantage point. Perhaps, from a higher dimension of existence, it is the real thing, and you, the caustic, skeptical observer, you are the contradiction, the edge of existence.
