2013 Bike for Breath report

Posted on 2013-10-04 by Nuchtchas Posted in General

FrednRe_2013b4bLast sunday Fred (from “Hi! I’m Fred”) and I participated in the NB Lung Association’s signature event, the Bike for Breath, for a second time.  Last year was our first year doing it and we trained all summer.  We wanted to do it as a physical challenge to ourselves but then found it was such a rewarding event that we knew we would be coming back this year.  Last year we had great weather leading up to the event and miserable weather during the event.  This year we had a lot of rain leading up to the event making training difficult but the day of the weather couldn’t have been better.  It was perfect.  Warm in the sun, cool in the shade.  No wind to speak of at all.  Perfect day for a ride.

Fred was signed up for the 66K and I was signed up for the 17K (it was a 28K last year which is a better distance for me I think).  One day I’d like to do the longer ride, but 66K is just out of my reach at the moment.  Another difference from last year is I have a new (to me) bike.  Last year I had a cruiser which I loved, it got me back into biking and made me feel like a kid again, but this year I needed a real roadie.  Lucky for me my mother offered me her old one, I just had to bring it up from NY.

The routes for both races were beautiful, even if you don’t get to do the bike for breath you should travel these routes, you will see prettier landscapes than you ever believed were around Fredericton.  Don’t get me wrong, I love our city and the surrounding area, driving along the river you can’t deny its ascetic appeal, but riding on a bike through the changing colours of fall, going over bridges and riding past rapids, it was awe-inspiring.

When we finished the ride we each felt amazing.  Unlike how I feel after a run, I felt like a super hero!  I felt like I could have done it again.  I felt amazing and I was pumped up.  The volunteers were very nice and had quite the energy boosting spread ready for us.  After the ride we chatted with other riders and waited for our heart rates to return to normal.

Later, there was the Chill Out.  Bikers who raid $50 or more are invited to join the Chill Out, it’s a little celebration with food in the James Joyce Pub and a beer tasting from Picaroons. (this beer tasting last year made us Picaroons customers)  Again there was an opportunity to mingle with other bikers and get to know people, but more importantly this was where the NB Lung Association was able to present to us all of the amazing things they have been doing over the last year.  This where I discovered some of the bikers I was riding with and paling around with all day were lung transplant survivors, one a double lung (talk about real super heroes).  How one of the bikers I had spent a good long time chatting with was the father of Catharine Pendrel, Olympic mountain biker and spokesperson for the Bike for Breath.

We found ourselves already planning for next year.  Next year we’d like to have a full CHSR team.  Sure not everyone will bike, but we can raise money together and support each other.  I encourage anyone reading this to get involved, and when there is an event like this in our community jump in!  It might make you feel like a super hero!

Morrissey and Higgs: The Lorenzo Reading Series #1

Posted on 2013-09-28 by katrina Posted in A Month of Saturdays, Reviews

I went this week to the first Lorenzo Reading Series event, all of which I will be going to and reviewing this coming year. For those who don’t know, the Lorenzo Society is UNBSJ’s arts and culture society, hosting events for art, music, and literature. Lorenzo brings authors annually to Saint John from across Canada to do readings, and often the writer will also have a writing workshop. They sponsor the Saint John String Quartet, and are part of the Fog Lit festival (Saint John Readers’ and Writers’s Festival). Lorenzo is also the “Mother Bear” to Vox, UNBSJ’s Student Arts Annual (the website is slightly out of date), the arts publication for visual art, poetry, and short fiction.

From the website: the Lorenzo Co-Ordinater, Margaret Anne Smith

The readings are somewhat of a riot to go to, I find. There was food, tea, and coffee, and the books from all of the readers featured in the Lorenzo Reading Series this year were for sale out front. There were upwards of 147 people who came to the Morrissey reading, who were still trickling in 10-past-7, when the reading was to begin. All in all, it was an exciting experience.

This week, Donna Morrissey was on campus, reading in Ganong Lecture Theatre from her newest novel, The Deception of Livvy Higgs. Morrissey did 3 separate readings from her book, from different sections, and then held a question and answer segment at the end. Unfortunately, I missed much of the reading and questions, as I was helping with the event, minding the tables out front and welcoming in the guests.

However, I did have a chance to pop inside a few times and listen to her speak. She had a very strong voice, she spoke broadly and loudly, and she was quite comedic. Between sentences and between her three readings, she tended to wander and ramble, and went on the occasional tangent when answering the questions.

TheDeceptionOfLivvyHiggsKyle Roberts, a reader of her novel who also attended the event had, however, the same opinion on the novel as I did. When asked about his experience at the reading, he said, “Although Donna Morrissey is a writer of novels you’ll find at airports alongside John Grisham and Danielle Steele, her ability to tell stories and converse with an audience makes one feel as though she isn’t writing at her skill level. She is bright and enjoyable and has a very accessible character which certainly is not reflected in her writing, which is a shame.”

The novel didn’t seem to hold up to the hype, but Morrissey’s reading of it was spectacular, with a huge personality to boot. No matter the opinion on the novel itself, one can’t deny the fact that Morrissey was a pleasure to be around and to hear speak and read. If you can, I strongly recommend taking a visit to Saint John for the Lorenzo, Vox, or Fog Lit Festival events.

The Lunchbox: 2x Interviews: Amanda Rheaume & Andrew Vaughan

Posted on 2013-09-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

Ar! It be International Talk Like A Pirate Day, matey! On this day, we gots a fine haul — a two-fer, no less!

First up, an interview with Amanda Rheaume all about her most recent album project, Keep The Fire. This album is a collection of great Canadian stories, all taken from her own families histories but reflecting common experiences across the history of this country. Amanda is currently on tour with the album, and will be in Gagetown, NS on September 19 at the Creekview Restaurant.

Second, it’s an interview with stand-up comic Andrew Vaughan (@andrewvaughan). He’s currently living in Halifax, but spent time in Fredericton including having two different shows here at CHSR. He’s coming to Fredericton again to perform at the Wilser’s Room on September 28. We talk about what it’s like to go from the guy in the audience saying “I’m funnier than those guys; I can do that!” to the guy on stage making everyone laugh (hopefully).

The Lunchbox: Interview: Lucia Stephen of ACORN on GrowAFarmer.ca

Posted on 2013-09-19 by encaf1 Posted in The Lunchbox

LunchBox-ACORNACORN is having a fundraising organic supper at The Cedar Tree Cafe in downtown Fredericton on Tuesday, September 24. Buy your ticket before Friday if you can, because that gives them an idea what numbers they need.

Times have changed, sure — but one thing is likely to always be true: people gotta eat.

And the quality of food a person puts in his or her body directly affects how they live.

New Brunswick and all of the Maritimes have a great legacy of growing food, and we’ve all learned more about better ways of doing so. That legacy, however, is growing older, and it’s the mission of organizations like ACORN to help preserve the knowledge we have gained, and pass it along to a new generation of organic farmers.

I had a pleasant conversation with Lucia Stephen, the Program Coordinator of ACORN‘s Grow A Farmer initiative, where we talked about the history and future of organic farming, and what their organization does to bridge between the two.
