My guest is Meredith Batt. Batt co-founded The Queer Heritage Initiative of New Brunswick along with Dusty Green. QHINB is a research project that aims to archive queer history in New Brunswick by preserving newsletters, photos, corresponence, oral histories, and more. We discussed the importance of archiving queer history and a book Batt co-wrote with Green called “Len and Cub” about two men who fell in love in New Brunswick in the early 20th century.

Hello there everyone.

Welcome to Episode 31 of Testing For Echo on CHSR 97.9 in Fredericton and around the world. I’m your host Tim Scammell.

Recently, we lost a world-renowned and universally respected Canadian superstar. His influence was everywhere and his loss has shaken the music world to its core.

I always knew him and heard him on the radio, but it wasn’t until I met my stepfather who introduced me to all of Gordon Lightfoot’s work did that I became a megafan.

When I lost my stepfather I had a hard time listening to Gordon for a while, but I did.

So, this isn’t really Prog Rock, but it’s Canada. Gordon wrote The Canadian Railroad Trilogy in 1967 for Canada’s Centennial year.

It’s wonderful and I’m playing it.

There is certainly a lot of Canadianity on this episode. It’s packed!

There’s hard Canadian and soft Canadian. Something for everyone.

FAA Artist in Residence Interview Series: Ysabelle Vautour

My guest is Ysabelle Vautour. Vautour spent a week as an Artist in Residence with the Fredericton Arts Alliance along with Ramneet Kalra. Vautour’s art focuses on disability activism and cultivating space for those with disabilities in the art scene. She has created the NB Disability Art Collective (NBDAC) to help her with her mission of creating accesibility and inclusivity in the art world. Vautour is a visual artist that’s primary art style is painting.

Testing For Echo – Episode 30 – Bring on the Canadianity – Orig. Air Date August 5, 2023

Hello there everyone.

Welcome to Episode 30 of Testing For Echo on CHSR 97.9 in Fredericton and around the world. I’m your host Tim Scammell.

This episode is very special.

There are several great Canadian tracks which is good, but there are THREE local NEW BRUNSWICK acts!

Mike Bern is an Indigenous singer and songwriter from Tobique First Nation, New Brunswick which is a short drive north from here.

I discovered Mike recently when a local station played his song No Words For Goodbye immediately following a very emotional interview with me. The interview was about a Wind Phone installation that I had spearheaded in the Village of New Maryland to help people who are grieving or suffering a loss. I won’t get into it here but I encourage you to look it up. It was so emotional and Mike’s song was perfect.

I immediately contacted him and asked if I could play the tune on the show and he was very appreciative. It is my absolute pleasure.

The second local play are those rocking crazy guys Not Now. Sadly, my son Braydon has left the band to be with his love in another province but is still very good friends with the lads. He did play drums on this track though. I will always play their music on my show no matter who the drummer is. They are a great bunch of guys and mean a lot to my family.

The third is our good friend Marcello Ciurleo who lives just down the highway a short way.

It’s a pretty touching show really, mixed in with rocking it out.
