The Lunchbox 2020-10-09: Spend A Long Weekend At Home
- On the food front, lots to celebrate today: Egg Day, Beer and Pizza Day and Moldy Cheese Day. Two of those are divine. The other is for… others to enjoy.
- It’s also Fire Prevention Day, although it’s really Fire Prevention Month. Or, as I like to think about it: “Let’s not start fires we shouldn’t want.”
- And finally, it’s World Post Day. Write a letter to someone. No, not an email. A real letter. As in, pen or pencil on paper. Your own words, your own handwriting, your own thoughts. Send it in the mail. Imagine what it would be like to get that yourself!
- Saturday is World Mental Health Day and World Homeless Day. The world is a tough place for all of us right now, but remember that there are those for whom the world has been even tougher, and will continue to be tougher, and for longer. You can help. Find organizations to give money or time to, and give thought and kindness where you can.
- It’s also SHIFT10 Day on Saturday, which suggests that you need to take care of your own community right around you by doing something really simple: spend 10% of your purchases right here. Buy a gift, go out to a restaurant (or order takeout), get that something you’ve been eyeing for a while for yourself. Do it here, and it stays here.
- Sunday is Coming Out Day. This would normally be Thanksgiving weekend; well, alright: it still technically is, but normally we’d be gathering in our family or friend groups for a meal and shared time. That plan has been put on hold for the moment, but you can still reach out to friends and family, and be aware and supportive if someone tells you who they really are on Sunday.
- And finally, Monday is Thanksgiving Day. This year, perhaps more than ever for this generation, we need to give thanks for what we have, and appreciate everything. We now know how easily it can change, and what we will miss when it’s postponed. It’s also Native American Day in the United States, but I think we can also acknowledge the heritage and history of the native peoples in New Brunswick, and pledge to work together to make life better for all of us.
- In 2017, I was joined in studio by musicians and friends touring under their own performances and the band name of Inland Island. Despite being from far-away Montreal, we discovered a mutual acquaintance, showing just how close we really are. From the album released in 2016 called Zsa Zsa’s Window Opens Slowly, we’ll also hear Rake and Family.
- And the latest Real Life Survivor that we spoke with is Karen Richardson, in the winter of last year.
Events:
- A reminder: masks will be required in all indoor events, as we act in safety and prevention to keep COVID from spreading.
- Homegrown are playing at Dolan’s Pub tonight and Saturday night at 9pm.
- Gin & Jazz with music by Bridge will be happening on Saturday evening at 7pm at Southside Shake in the Hilton Garden Inn, downtown on Queen St.
- Braden Lam will be holding his album release party at Grimross Brewing on Saturday evening at 8pm, alongside with Atlas.
- There will be an artisan’s market at Kings Landing on Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Rain date is Sunday.
- Food at the Ex continues this week, with 9 vendors! Open on Fridays from 11am to 7pm, Saturdays from 9am to 4pm, and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
- The North Side Creators Market will be open as usual this Saturday from 8am-2pm at Picaroon’s Round House. Remember to spend at least 10% of your whole purchases locally!
- And with another weekend comes another chance to find yourself Attending The Apocalypse! The presentation at the UNB Art Centre (Memorial Hall) is open on Sunday from noon to 5pm. Remember: you must book a time ahead of time, as only 4 people will be allowed into the exhibit at a time, and for only 20 minutes at a time. Entrance is free, however.
News update:
- Premier Blaine Higgs announced yesterday face masks are now mandatory in all indoor public spaces starting today.
- Testimonies within the Matthew Vincent Raymond trial were on hold until this morning.
- It’s a good time to replace those smoke alarms in your kitchen with this year’s National Fire Prevention Week.
- A man from Moncton has been charged with attempted murder after a shooting incident in Dieppe last November.
- Blood donors are wanted ahead of the Thanksgiving long weekend this year.
- Fredericton is reopening two of its arenas to allow limited public skating and walking tracks for the first time since COVID-19.
- Moonshine Creek Distillery announced it will release Chicken Bones Liqueur for the 2020 holidays.

The Lunchbox 2020-10-06: Dangerously Awesome
- Tuesday was Mad Hatter Day, so I hope you weren’t surprised to find your head crying out for funky covering.
- Speaking of funky head coverings, I thought of Jeff Alpaugh and his Dangerous Designs. He branched out from shirts to create fancy facemasks early during the pandemic, and I spoke to him in 2017 just before his challenge on the Dragon’s Den.
- And I noticed that Quinn Bonnell is going to be doing a show this month, which is all the excuse I need to bring out the 2016 interview I did with him, just as his album Moving Pictures came out. We also hear two tracks from the album: the title track Moving Pictures and I Don’t Mind.
- By now, you’ve missed the debut performance of “Let’s Fall In Love” by Spearhead Theatre, but the good news is that this show has another date of October 17 at the Crowne Plaza Fredericton-Lord Beaverbrook. So, get your tickets!

RFYL Episode – PermanencyEP135
In this week’s episode, we visit both amazingly heavy and wonderfully chill some ballads can be, with a bit of spice in-between to get us ready for the Halloween season. Sometime, I might actually write this up before I set up the episode but something tells me that might be a bit too scripted for my liking.
Apologies for not being able to consistently produce new episodes for you folks. My voice seems to be the most impacted from whatever it is I’m dealing with, and even though I barely talk in these episodes, even then it’s a bit much.
Anyway, too real. Enjoy music. Seeya next week.

The Lunchbox 2020-09-30: It’s Time for Milk & Cookies
- Today is Ask a Stupid Question Day. This is not just for people who ask the questions, but must be honoured by anyone who gets a question that feels off-kilter today. Respect the person asking the question, and give them an honest answer. Trust me: you’ll be there someday, too.
- It’s also Hot Mulled Cider Day, which sounds like a great idea — aside from the ultra-humid weather. It’s also Extra Virgin Olive Oil Day, which goes with everything, every day. Just don’t be fooled, because the acronym EVOO is not a superhero.
- This was also International Translation Day, so I have a feeling my guest from last week’s Word Feast, Jo-Anne Elder, may have had a cake.
- It’s the end of September, and after hearing the song Milk & Cookies by The Steady Swagger, I had no choice. Technically, it’s a pre-Christmas song, but I think it was just what I needed today. So, I also decided to bring forth my interview from a few years ago with this fun band, just to give you more of a taste.
- I also felt we could use a little more hero, so I drew out the first featured subject of our Real Life Survivor series, Louie Stravato.
- Today is Orange Shirt Day, remembering the story of young Phyllis, a survivor who was six when she had her orange shirt taken away from her the first day she was in Mission Residential School. Orange Shirt Day compels everyone to be reflective and commemorate the experiences of survivors, their families and communities. It also sets the stage for sincere dialogue about colonization and anti-Indigenous racism, as well as coming together in the spirit of piluwitahasuwawsuwakon. Piluwitahasuwawsuwakon is a Wolastoqey word that means, “allowing your thinking to change so that action will follow in a good way toward truth” (Opolahsomuwehs/Dr. Imelda Perley).
- The Fiddlehead, Atlantic Canada’s International Literary Journal is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Along with publishing a special fifth issue, they are hosting free online events featuring live readings from many of the authors who contributed to the anniversary issue. Over the final months of 2020, the series will highlight writers from across the country as they tour through the issue, beginning on the east coast and moving west. Tonight at 7pm EST to hear Antony Di Nardo, Tanya Evanson, Michelle Porter, Gabriel Robichaud, Émilie Turmel, Jo-Anne Elder, and a Q&A with authors.
- The NBCCD Advanced Studio Free Guest Lecture series starts on Thursday at noon, with Tony Merzetti: The Accidental Filmmaker. Tony will relate his story as an MBA graduate who turned his back on a traditional, safe, prosperous career in accounting or banking for the uncertain prospects of entering the world of film in New Brunswick in the 1980s. Through his journey, he will relate the life lessons he picked up on the way, and how he balanced film creation activities with paid work in the film sector. Watch the lectures on Zoom each Thursday at 12pm at this link: bit.ly/guest-lecture-series.
- There will be a Rally for Affordable Housing and Tenant Rights on Thursday afternoon at 4:30pm at The Exhibition Grounds. Fredericton City Council is poised to give away Fredericton Exhibition Grounds to developers for profit without guarantee for affordable housing. Join the rally to demand affordable housing and defend the right to housing. See the Facebook event for more details.
News update:
- New Brunswick Public Health reported no new cases of COVID-19 yesterday afternoon.
- The jury in the Matthew Vincent Raymond trial was shown detailed and at times graphic photographs of the crime scene.
- Premier Blaine Higgs is saying goodbye to six members of his previous cabinet after a shuffle yesterday.
