The Lunchbox 2020-10-27: Fix The Photo Albums
- Celebrate Black Cat Day! They are beautiful, enigmatic critters that love scritches. Be kind and understanding, not suspicious.
- And be nice in general! If you’re not maybe you’re the one your colleagues are complaining about! It’s Cranky Co-Workers Day, so they’ll be watching with chagrin.
- If you’ve got a pile of photographs lying around, today might be a good time to figure out how you should really organize them. It’s the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, so figure out how to capture the voices in your life, the pictures of your favourite moments, and label everything for the anthropologists and descendants of the future.
- CONGRATULATIONS TO CHSR’S OWN ERIN BOND! Erin was recognized at Prix MusicNB Awards as the HARDEST WORKING PERSON OF THE YEAR for 2020! The ongoing celebration continues with Bondo’s Pick of Jessica Rhaye and the Ramshackle Parade‘s cover of Bob Dylan’s One More Cup Of Coffee. I had an extra cup, just for that reason.)
- We continue to look back at this fall’s Word Feast, with Jo-Anne Elder, chair of the festival, talking about Word Feast’s Video Poetry Bash.
- Today’s extra music comes from other recent big winners at the Prix MusicNB Awards, Les Hay Babies. Here’s their 2012 recorded-on-location version of Tumbleweed.
- Halloween is being supported each night this week from 6pm to 11pm with the annual APEGNB Haunted Tour #2020 edition at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. It’s operating under COVID-protection rules (wear a mask, hand-sanitize at the door, don’t come if you’re sick/have been sick/have been exposed) as well as travelling through in bubbles of four people. You’ll need to buy your ticket ahead of time and be on time!
- It’s a theatre week!
- Missed “Know Brunswick?” last week? No worries! It’s happening at Maxwell’s at The Crowne Plaza Fredericton-Lord Beaverbrook at 5:30pm on this Wednesday and next Wednesday. A blend of stand-up comedy, trivia, improv, and maybe a little serious scripted drama thrown in?! See the EventBrite event for more details and to get tickets.
- The 2nd Annual Plain Site Theatre Festival is online this year from Wednesday, October 28 through October 31. This theatre festival aims to foster LGBTQ2+ talent and visibility. This years lineup of digital plays includes, readings, performances and workshops includes three new plays for this year, two plays adapted from last year, and two special productions. See the Facebook event for more details.
- TNB’s Fall Festival of New Plays continues this week on Thursday, October 29 at 7:30pm with Caroline Coon‘s It Happened at a Party. It Happened at A Party focuses on the grey areas of sexual assault. Relationships and situations are complicated and are never as black and white as society makes them out to be. We begin with three young adults named Lexi, Ryan and Tyler as they drink and get ready to go out to a party. After much prodding, they convince their friend Camille to join them for a night of fun. Recently, she has been distant from the group after coping with tragedy but agrees to join them. The night goes on and Camille ends up in an uncomfortable situation. As she faces doubt from her friends and denial from her attacker, we are faced with the unfair experiences of sexual assault victims today. This play is intended to open difficult conversations and pave the way for a new reality. See the TNB page for full details. The Festival continues until November 25.
- If you love taking beautiful photographs, you should join Photo Fredericton for their monthly meeting this Tuesday night at 7pm online. For more details, visit photofredericton.ca.

The Lunchbox 2020-10-26: Happy Moonday!
- As we count down the days to Halloween, it’s time to start really celebrate! It’s Howl At The Moon Day and Pumpkin Day, so there should be a bunch of (non-threatening) midnight carvers out this evening…
- It’s also Mincemeat Day, which isn’t really Halloweenish, but… tasty!
- It’s also Intersex Awareness Day. Be sure to broaden your views on sex and gender, because any notion of the simple binary is just that: simple. Be understanding. Be better people.
- CONGRATULATIONS TO CHSR’S OWN ERIN BOND! Erin was recognized at Prix MusicNB Awards as the HARDEST WORKING PERSON OF THE YEAR for 2020! To celebrate, I’ll be adding selections from her contribution to my show, Bondo’s Picks all week long. Today, it’s Foreign Diplomats.
- I’m also looking back at this fall’s Word Feast. Today, we hear from Jennifer Houle about this year’s online festival.
- And, since I have time, I’m going to include more music this week, both local selections and something that might put it in a spooky mood. Today, it’s Bloody Diamonds with I’m Not A Machine.

The Lunchbox: 2020-10-23: No Bologna, It’s The Weekend!

To book your time to see it, visit the UNB Art Centre site.

The Lunchbox 2020-10-19: Question Today (Change Later)
- I know Mondays make us all question what we’re doing, but this week it was also Evaluate Your Life Day. If that’s too hard to handle in general, just relax a bit with Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day.
- As part of the process of questioning everything, I returned to my 2016 interview with Jakob Wildman-Sisk about the release of the documentary Millennial Dream.
- And as a related palate cleanser for looking at things differently, I brought out my interview from this summer with Emily Kennedy, who was in Odell Park this summer to look at composing electronic music with natural sounds.
- The dinner theatre at the Crown Plaza-Lord Beaverbrook continues this week, but with an altered schedule. “We’ll Meet Again” will now be opening on November 3, so you haven’t missed it! And the opening of “Know Brunswick?” was moved from last week to this Wednesday night at 5:30pm. Think you know New Brunswick? Well you don’t… know, “Know Brunswick!” An interactive “Game Show” in which the audience will help the contestants answer regional trivia questions and award their favourite contestant with points to help them win the grand prize… a one way ticket out of this province! A blend of stand-up comedy, trivia, improv, and maybe a little serious scripted drama thrown in?! Herbert The Cow Productions in conjunction with Maxwell’s brings you this dinner theatre, which includes a 3-course meal for a bubble table of up to 4 people.
News update:
- New Brunswick Public Health reported five new cases of COVID-19 and one new death yesterday afternoon.
- Psychiatrist Dr. Ralph Holly took the stand in the Matthew Vincent Raymond trial Friday.
- 211 NB is now accessible across New Brunswick.
- The New Brunswick Green Party is calling the NB Nurse’s Union investigation into long-term care a “Wake-up call” for political leaders.
- Canadian university winter national championships have been cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The RCMP is asking the public for help locating a missing Moncton man.
- A new student-friendly food delivery app has made its way to Fredericton.
- And four cabinet ministers and the NDP have requested an emergency debate in the house of commons over a treaty dispute between commercial fishermen and Mi’kmaq fishers.

The Lunchbox 2020-10-16: We All Need To Eat
- The fact that it was World Food Day has much more than just what’s for dinner. We need to consider how our food gets to us, and gets to everyone fairly.
- It was also Department Store Day, which we can all celebrate by… Well, I’m not sure, but probably not by going to a department store, anyway.
- This was also a day to remember an icon. It’s hard to argue that Steve Jobs didn’t have a great impact on our modern world.
- Saturday is going to be Spreadsheet Day, so Let’s. Get. Ready. To. CALCULATE!
- More importantly, this weekend includes the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Donate to a food bank, support initiatives for affordable housing, consider arguments for universal basic income.
- Along those lines, we revisit my talk with Kelsey Rusk in 2017 about the 50th Anniversary of Meals on Wheels.
- And I had a great talk with Sarah Sarty this summer about her rediscovery of old photography techniques.
- Finally, because I had some time, I brought forward a pick from Bondo from last year: Hey Major with Brother.
- The Silver Wave Film Festival is virtual this year! From November 5 through 11 you’ll get a chance to indulge in a plethora of local films from the comfort of your own chair. See the website for more details.

- This weekend, you can get a little spooked by heading to the Sleepy Hollow Haunted trail in Keswick. Full COVID-safe protocols will be observed, including masks, social distancing and small groups. This is a HIGH SCARE event, so no little ones. Tours will be on schedule at the appointed time; this year appointment times are given from 7pm to 10pm. Walk-ins are welcome after 10pm; this event will not close until everyone has gone through. Book now by messaging or call 440-5431. See the Facebook event for more details.
- Don’t forget you can still Attend The Apocalypse this Sunday at Memorial Hall, UNB Campus to see these two presentations: Elysium, by Janice Wright Cheney exploring the symbolic power of mushrooms and the potential for mycelia to reshape our society; and Scratchcards for the Apocalypse, Jennifer Lee Weibe explores language and our understanding of content in a series of canvases painted with tweets made by Donald Trump since 2015.
- Prepare to laugh with Comedy Night with Jimmy MacKinley & Paul Lewis at The Charlotte St Arts Centre at 7pm (doors open by 6pm)

The Lunchbox 2020-10-15: Finding Words
- It was a confluence of important moments on Thursday, with Get Smart About Credit Day, World Students’ Day and the International Day of Rural Women.
- It was also Willee O’Ree Day! Considered the “Jackie Robinson of Hockey”, in 1958 O’Ree became the first Black man to play in the National Hockey League.
- I went back to 2017 with my conversation with Jillian and Alex about Theatre UNB’s presentation of Criminals In Love, because I’m really missing regular theatre right now.
- And I also went back to this summer and my conversation with Riel Nason about their experience writing in the Botanic Gardens as an artist-in-residence.
- And as we head into the wild and wooly weather season, we return to another Positive Song For Pandemics from Lainie B of Monday night’s B Street. This time, Frank Turner‘s The Next Storm.
